Online CV suggests PlayStation 4 development began in August 2010
According to the LinkedIn profile of Attila Vass, ex-Research & Development Director for Sony Computer Entertainment America, work on the PlayStation 4 started almost two years ago.
Vass, who is now VP of Mobile Technologies, Mobile Games at Next Media Animation, explains in the opening paragraph of his full profile (which we managed to gain access to via fellow site Videogamer):
“In 1998 I started as the first engineer in the PlayStation US R&D. During the past years I worked on graphics (COLLADA, PSGL) and a lot of network-related technologies (advertising, telemetry, PVRs) for the PlayStation2-x, PSP, Vita and Next Generation platforms.”
Sure enough, under Projects he lists graphics library and security work associated with the “Next Generation PlayStation”, dating from August 2010 to April 2012.
Back in May, SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton told Spike TV’s Geoff Keighley that Sony wants the PS4 to be the best machine: “we’ve never been first. We’ve never been cheapest. It’s about being the best. If you want to build a better machine it’s going to come out a little bit later, but that’s better than rushing something to market that’s going to run out of gas in the long-term”.
If life has taught me anything in 28 years, it’s that ‘the best’ takes time.

well, sony will have to switch up their controllers to win me over. i think the 360 controller is simply much better designed than the legacy playstation controller.

It feels kinda weird switching from a 360 pad to a PS3 one, but you get used to it eventually.
Failing that, there’s also third-party PS3 pads with 360-like designs, and I assume there’ll be some for the PS4 too. 😉
