Octopath Traveler Is Back — On Mobile Anyway
This week, Square Enix’s long-awaited remake of the lost SNES classic Live A Live was released internationally. Millions are now getting the chance to enjoy this formerly Japan-exclusive title from the company’s Golden Age, now reproduced in the studio’s “H2-2D” style. A style that, by the way, just happened to be introduced by the game this article is talking about, so…cue segue!
A prequel to Octopath Traveler has just landed, but we have to tell you — it’s a mobile game. Mobile games have a well-deserved rep for being worse than any other type of video game, and we won’t fib here and claim there aren’t freemium mechanics in this one too. But if you want Octopath on the go, and you can’t bring your Switch with you for some reason, there’s a simple solution as of now.
The game is set a few years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, at a time when cruel tyrants rule the world of Orsterra. Their greed and destruction have brought forth dark monsters and other perils that you and your party will have to fight in this mobile RPG. Those who join the party on launch, or near it, will receive 5,000 Leaves, 16 Experience Nuts (M), 20 Gold Guidestones, 1 Pursuer’s Gloves I and 300 Rubies.
- HD-2D: Evolved Pixel Art – The game’s classic 2D pixel art is enhanced with 3D-CG effects, bringing the wondrous world of Orsterra to life. Rediscover the beautifully stylized environments filled with side quests, dangerous bosses, and treasures.
- Strategic and Exhilarating Combat – Dive into an evolved command-style battle system, which utilizes up to eight party members and swipe controls that allow for fast-paced command selection.
- A Massive Roster – With over 64 characters at launch, explore an endless combination of characters to build your ultimate team. Pick the right team for the right fight and reign victorious on the battlefield.
- Engaging Character Interactions – The possibilities are endless with different options for character interactions on the field and with townspeople. Players can negotiate with other characters by raising their influence to “Purchase” or “Hire” with money, “Contend” or “Impress” with their strength, or test their luck with “Entreat” or “Invite.”
- Choose Your Adventure – The “Chosen Ones” must rise against the great evils of Orsterra. What perils will players encounter on their journey? No matter what storyline players start with, players can experience them all.
- Epic Game Soundtrack – Yasunori Nishiki, the composer behind OCTOPATH TRAVELER, is back for this latest installment with new compositions exclusive to this game.
At launch, players will have a chance at unlocking another playable character, Tressa Colzione. You will need two Guiding Lights to do so, which is what they call gacha mechanics in the game. Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is available now on iOS and Android.
