New Service Gives People Cryptocurrency For Game Achievements
No one really knows where this whole cryptocurrency business is headed, but there are a lot of them out there now and they’re resorting to some interesting tactics to stand out from everybody else. One currency, which uses the embarrassing title RAWG Tokens, isn’t earned through traditional data-mining….you get the tokens through pulling off achievements in video games.
Currently, the only thing you earn from rare achievements in games is a silver or gold trophy and bragging rights. The folks behind RAWG believe it can be successfully translated into cryptocurrency. Here’s how it would work: sync your favorite games to RAWG, do what you normally do, and when you finally won that chicken dinner or pulled off that hard stunt, you would get RAWG Tokens as a reward.
At launch the value of the tokens will be limited to purchases on the site. Playrix, Game Insight, Xsolla, Gaijin Entertainment, and Wargaming have all signed up to offer stuff, and RAWG swears the list will expand by the time the service is live.
RAWG has received $4 million from investors hoping its gimmick will be enough to make it the next Bitcoin, or at least the next Dogecoin. If the launch goes smoothly, look for it this summer. Don’t count on making games your new job, though.
