Netflix Resident Evil got canceled after only 1 season
Netflix Resident Evil got canceled after one season only. The show mainly garnered adverse reactions from both fans and critics alike.
Resident Evil fans can catch a break. All they wanted was an adaptation that respects the source material, but Constantine films, the company with the franchise’s movie rights, uses their liberties way too much.
It got a 55% score from the critics and a 27% score from the fans at Rotten Tomatoes.
The Resident Evil games change genre as it evolves, but it’s always between Survival horror or Action Horror. The show we have is like a CW young adult drama with unlikable characters. I think they want Jade to be a flawed character, but they gave her no shade of likability. The Resident Evil games have many strong female characters, so the franchise fans are not close-minded to female leads. Jade and Billie are not likable at all. They caused the T-virus outbreak because they are vegans who want to fight for the rights of rabbits used for animal testing.
Netflix Resident Evil also have questionable writing
Paola Núñez is a talented actress and she makes the material given to her work but who approves this scene? Who thinks this is a great idea?
Such a repulsive lead character is Jade Wesker. She greets this kind woman in the neighborhood with rudeness and crudeness, and she utters the following cringe-worthy phrase:
I mostly watch Zootopia porn.
I understand that people can relate more to a flawed character because they have room to grow, but the most successful flawed character still has charisma and a redeemable personality. They want to make a new story instead of copying and pasting the game’s events. They could have made a new story with new characters that share the same universe as the game. A show or movie that is canon.
So what could we have gotten if this show was renewed? The people behind the show would have loved to introduce Ada Wong and Lady Dimitrescu to the show. I hope Constantine films will give the franchise to a director and scriptwriter who is a fan of the material. It works with MCU despite some polarizing decisions. The showrunner and producers of TV shows and movies should realize to take fans in consideration before adapting something.
