Netflix Pegs Wednesday For November 23
Netflix has revealed when we can expect Tim Burton’s eight-episode Wednesday series — November 23! Our first thought was, “that date better fall on a Wednesday.” We checked, and it does. So it has that going for it, but it’s strange Netflix would put this out around Thanksgiving instead of Halloween. Until now everyone assumed an October release.
Jenna Ortega, the latest actress to play the Addams daughter, commented to EW.com that the role was different because “We’ve never seen her as a teenager girl.” I would argue that it shouldn’t make THAT much of a difference — Rachel Hunter’s YouTube series Adult Wednesday Addams portrayed her as a grown-up, and there was virtually no difference in her sardonic, cold-as-a-gravestone personality. That wouldn’t change here either, would it? If Wednesday’s personality were to ever change, she would no longer be the same character.
But Ortega means something different. “You know, it’s funny and sweet and almost charming to hear this eight-year-old’s obsession with murder and blood and guts. As she gets older, that nasty attitude or [those] biting remarks, it’s almost kind of hard to not make it sound like every other teenage girl.” First thing, what is wrong with the teenagers in Ortega’s home town and two, how is it sweet for a little girl to…..I think perhaps the role may have gone to Ortega’s head.
Ortega acknowledges, “I’ve never had the opportunity to play an iconic character before. I know she’s well-loved and well-respected and I just don’t want to mess her up.” We don’t want you to mess her up either. We’ll see how well you did.
Wednesday premieres Wednesday, November 23, on Netflix. We may get a full trailer tomorrow during their TUDUM torrent of press releases.
