Mawthorne Enters Final Day Of Kickstarter Campaign
Apologies for not telling you about this one earlier, but there’s a new Metroidvania game out there for the NES, and its crowdfunding campaign — which is a massive success — wraps up in just 24 hours. The game is called Mawthorne, it’s pretty much done and awaiting physical production, and it’s by homebrew creator CrazyGroupTrio (one person), creator of the excellent Shera and the 40 Thieves.
Who’s Mawthorne? That’s a long story. The distant planet Ozahk has come under fire from a deadly asteroid that’s brought a ton of red liquid with it that’s harmful to the planet’s native race. Fortunately, the people of Ozahk are very technologically advanced and had the smarts to build an underground city to protect those of them who survived. But what now? Since the Oxahk could not destroy the asteroid or its effects themselves, they created a being that could withstand the effects of the liquid it’s leaking — Mawthorne.
Now as Mawthorne, you must explore the upper areas, destroy mutant bosses and save your planet.
- Open world consisting of 9 different areas to map out and explore.
- Simple intuitive controls that allow you to attack, jump, and climb.
- 10 different bosses to conquer.
- Health, power, and defense upgrades to discover.
- NPCs to interact with for hints and uncover more of the story.
- DPCM samples for improved music.
(For those who don’t know: DCPM is the NES’s fifth sound channel, reserved for playback of real audio — since such things took a lot of memory and NES carts weren’t very big, the effect was used sparingly. But today’s beefy NES ROMs can get away with using more samples.)
You can get Mawthorne digitally, or in one of THREE different physical formats: American NES, Japanese Famicom (yes, the game will also be in Japanese), or Sega Dreamcast! The NES cart costs $35, the Dreamcast disc costs $45, and the Famicom cart (with box) costs $55. Mawthorne has actually hit its final stretch goal, which was for a Steam release, but the page has not been updated with details.
Hurry and reserve your copy of Mawthorne because you only have until tomorrow. Follow this link to make your pledge.
