MARVEL envisions Paul Bettany as “The Vision”
Yes, incredibly lame pun, I know. Somebody’s gotta say it; might as well be me.
Marvel Entertainment announced today, via The Hollywood Reporter, that Paul Bettany has been cast to play The Vision in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Paul Bettany, as some know, is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For years, he has portrayed JARVIS, Tony Stark’s robot butler, with his signature British accent, in the Iron Man films as well as The Avengers. This will be the first time he will actually be onscreen, though.
Can you envision it?
Yes, yes, I’ll stop the puns, I promise.
This also seems to imply that the movie may take a different turn than the comic book tradition, as this could mean that JARVIS may become the basis for The Vision, instead of The Vision being a machine created from the ground up by Ultron.
In addition to this, The Latino Review is reporting that Carol Danvers, aka “Ms. Marvel” (who Marvel recently rebranded as “Captain Marvel” in the most recent comics), may be appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron as well.
If that is true, then Joss Whedon has one heck of a juggling act to contend with. If Danvers does show up, whether Katee Sackhoff portrays her or not, I doubt she will appear fully empowered. We have all of the returning cast from the first Avengers (other than Loki), plus Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch, plus Ultron, and now The Vision. I doubt there is room, even in a three-hour movie, to fit in an origin story for Carol Danvers. That may be something that has to wait for the future.
Still, it looks like this will be quite the packed action film. 2015 cannot come soon enough.
