Lily Gao disabled her Social Media after getting Harassed by some Resident Evil 4 fans
Lily Gao disabled her Instagram account after receiving a lot of harassment from some Resident Evil 4 fans. Many fans do not like her portrayal of Ada Wong, but in my opinion, it is not that bad. Especially it is her first time to be a Voice actress as she is more of a TV and movie actress. She played Ada Wong in the Live action movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon city. That movie promised to be more faithful to the source material but it is not. It will only look good if compared to that canceled Netflix Series. When she played Ada Wong in Live action her screen time is only for 2 minutes.
Lily Gao as Liveaction Ada Wong
That short portrayal though allowed her to get the Resident Evil 4 remake gig. Lily is the second actress to play a live-action version of Ada Wong. Chinese Actress Li Bingbing played her in Resident Evil: Retribution movie. She has a think accent so she was voiced by Sally Cahill who was the original Voice actress.
All of Ada’s screen time in Resident Evil 4 remake
The Past actresses who voiced Ada, except in the Dead by Daylight version had been voiced by professional voice actresses. Acting in the Camera and behind the microphone are two different art forms. Many Resident Evil fans see Sally Cahill as the Ultimate Ada Wong voice actress. Every past Ada Wong voice actress had been White. Lily Gao is the first Asian American woman to voice Ada.
YouTuber Dan Allen Gaming made a compilation of every voice actress Leon Kennedy’s one great love ever had:
Lily Gao had less experience among these voice actresses, but I won’t say her voice acting is terrible. It is good enough to make Resident Evil 4 Remake receive a lot of positive reviews. Some fans have no life, so they decided to harass Lily Gao on her social media account. This leads her to delete all of her posts except an essay about White Privilege. Many fans do get an emotional attachment to voice actors and face models of characters.
Sasha Zotova got harassment by fans she replaced Julia Voth as Jill Valentine’s face because fans have a decade-old relationship with that version.
She eventually win them over by streaming Resident Evil games and shows respect to her predecessor. The Voice Actress of Claire Redfield stayed anonymous and goes by the name “James Baker” after she replaced Allyson Court in Resident Evil: Revelations 2.She probably knows the backlash of replacing her with a beloved and iconic voice actress. Stephanie Panisello from Resident Evil 2 remake, won over the fans streaming herself playing the game.
So, why does Capcom replace voice actors? Capcom prefers non-union voice actors and face models. They are cheaper because they are still making a name for themselves.
What Lily Gao goes through is an extreme case of Nostalgic Goggles. Fans were so attached to the previous version that they became hostile to any replacement. I hope fans will realize that the talents that work in the video game industry are people too with emotions and feelings.
With the success of the Resident Evil 4 Remake, DLC will be a possibility. So, Separate Ways, which is Ada’s side of the story, might become a DLC. These hostile fans are not the majority. Past Voice Actors and Character face models have a positive experience from Resident Evil fans. I hope Lily will get embraced by the fanbase on the inevitable DLC.
