League Of Legends Creator Riot Bans Sponsor After Dispute
An argument between Riot, the developer of League of Legends, and the key selling website G2A has broken out and led to the service being banned from sponsoring any professional teams. Teams such as Cloud9, Counter Logic Gaming and H2K have been told that they cannot compete unless they remove mention of G2A from their team names and materials, while any mention of the website has been removed from merchandise available at the 2015 League of Legends World Championships.
The dispute seems to hinge on the fact that it not only sells League of Legends accounts but also offers to help boost accounts. Known as elo boosting, the practice sees boosters logging onto players accounts to improve their matchmaking rating, though this is specifically banned by the game’s terms and conditions as it abuses the matchmaking system put in place by Riot. This is a problem as the developer believes it stops the game being enjoyable if they are matched with people not at their real skill level.
“If a player’s MMR is boosted unnaturally they will most definitely falter when they begin to play ranked at that tier,” Riot has said. “If a player is unable to keep up with the other higher MMR players in their match they will most certainly degrade the game experience for everyone involved.”
