Kodansha And ComiXology Bring Over MF Ghost
Shuichi Shigeno is probably best known for Initial D, the iconic street racing manga he wrote and drew for nearly 20 years. Four years after retiring Initial D, Shigeno stated focusing on a new story, albeit with similar themes: MF Ghost, which began in 2017. It’s still running today, serialized in the pages of Weekly Young Magazine, and its book collections have sold over 2.7 million copies. It’s about time MF Ghost showed up in America, don’t you think?
Kodansha has teamed up with ComiXology to produce an official English translation of MF Ghost, which will begin appearing in the digital library January 11 (hey, that’s tomorrow). So what is MF Ghost anyway? It’s basically an Initial D spinoff, and also, the initials in the title don’t stand for what you’re thinking they do.
The best-selling MF Ghost takes place in the 2020s, where self-driving electric cars have replaced internal combustion ones. However, in Japan, there is a large organization called MFG, founded by Ryosuke Takahashi (from the Initial D series), that conducts street races with internal combustion cars. There’s a new rookie on the scene, Kanata Livington who competes under the pseudonym Kanata Katagiri. Kanata has been trained by legendary racer Takumi Fujiwara (protagonist from the Initial D series) at the Royal Donington Racing School in the UK and is a Formula 4 world champion. He has only one motive: to find his long-lost father. But first he must take on a 19-year-old Japanese-British racer, who has shown up on the scene driving a Toyota 86 and is beating top-tier European cars.
An anime adaption of MF Ghost has also been announced, but it won’t be ready until 2023. Get ahead of everyone else with ComiXology’s manga translations. The first ten volumes will become available tomorrow.
