After a detour into superhero movies, some better than others, Joss Whedon has returned to the medium where he’s found the most success — television — with HBO’s The Nevers, premiering in two months. It covers familiar ground for Joss — young women with supernatural powers — but there are a couple of new twists thrown in. The first trailer was released today.
While we’ve known The Nevers is coming for quite some time, there are a couple of things this trailer revealed that are news to us….first off, it’s set in Victorian England, with all the frilly fans and tight corsets one would expect. Maybe that was revealed earlier and we just weren’t paying attention. Either way, there will be gaslamps and stuffy accents aplenty. There’s even a touch of steampunk — we spotted some out-there mechanical gizmos being used in a couple of scenes.
The second revelation: The Nevers is just six episodes long. Is it just a miniseries or is that the length of the first season? HBO won’t say. They played a similarly coy game with the Watchmen series from two years ago, and that turned out to be a miniseries. Don’t get too attached to these girls because you might not get to see very much of them. If there ever actually IS a second season, it would have to be made without Joss, who quit the production last November.
The Nevers stars Laura Donnelly (Outlander), Ann Skelly (Red Rock), Olivia Williams (Dollhouse), James Norton (Grantchester), Tom Riley (Da Vinci’s Demons), Rochelle Neil (TV’s Das Boot), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), Amy Manson (Once Upon a Time), Pip Torrens (The Crown), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story), Zackary Momoh (Seven Seconds), Elizabeth Berrington (Sanditon), Kiran Sawar (Pure), Anna Devlin, Viola Prettejohn, Ella Smith (Babylon), Nick Frost (Into the Badlands) and Ben Chaplin (The Letter for the King). It premieres this April on HBO (no exact date set). Those who get HBO Max will also be able to watch.
