IMDB TV Rebranded To Something Even Weirder
In 2019 Amazon Prime launched a subsection of their subscription streaming service that would offer free ad-supported content. They called this Freedive, but after viewers failed to dive into it, they quickly renamed it with a recognizable brand. Only problem was, their idea of a recognizable brand was the Internet Movie Database, so the service became IMDB TV. If naming a free streaming channel after an encyclopedia for obscure trivia doesn’t make sense to you, you’ll never be as rich as Bezos.
IMDB TV has a better lineup of content than it did when it first took on that name, but most people still aren’t aware that it exists, and we put the blame squarely on that awful name (that, and the fact that to even find the thing, you have to boot up Prime Video first and then do some hunting, because it’s very hidden). Today Amazon finally admitted its shortcomings and announced yet another rebrand. This time they’re calling it “Freevee.”
Not an improvement. Freevee sounds like the name of a gadget sold in a 1990s informercial that slices julienne fries while cutting your child’s hair at the same time. But boss Ashraf Alkarmi is convinced he did a smart thing. “Our new name clearly communicates who we are: An easy-to-navigate streaming service, available to users for free, whenever and wherever they choose to watch some of the greatest Original and licensed content available,” he brags.
Why are these obscenely rich companies so bad at naming their own things? Why did Microsoft think “One” would be a good name for the THIRD XBox? Why would it name the fourth XBox something as cold as “Series”? Why Freevee? WHYYY?
Anyway, Freevee (shudder) rebrands on April 27 and it has the Leverage revival series, so it’s worth checking out just for that…assuming you can find it on Prime’s menu. You’ll need a map.

It is like a Pathetic attempt to appeal to the Gen Z.
