Hex Arcana Announces Pulp Horror Reprint Collection
You know Hex Studios as the makers and distributors of low-budget indie horror, but they’ve expanded recently into publishing with a new division of their company called Hex Arcana. The publisher marked its first release last year with “The Book of Beastly Creatures,” a short story anthology. But they’d like to expand.
Hex is now taking on an interesting project: the revival of old pulp horror paperback novels, and we mean that literally. Their first release will be a deluxe reprint of “The Sound of His Horn,” a horror novel by Sarban first published in 1952. It takes place in an alternate 1950s where the Nazis won World War II and people are hunted for sport. These old pulp novels were known for their deliciously macabre and over-the-top covers, and Hex enlisted painter Lisa Falkenstern to create a new one for this release. There will also be a new foreword by scholar Kim Newman.
“We’re honored and excited to present a brand new edition of this genre gem as the first volume in our collectable paperback range,” says editorial director Sarah Daly. “With Hex Arcana, we want to reignite the lurid spark of magic that made the pulp horror novels of the past so enticing to read and to own.” Co-founder Lawrie Brewster added, “At Hex, we’re passionate about physical media, about creating tangible objects for horror fans to treasure. We want to help lead the movement for original, painted covers that evoke feeling when you see them on a shelf, or hold them in your hand.”
More pulp horror reprints are planned from Hex Studios. “The Sound Of His Horn” is currently available exclusively through a Kickstarter campaign.
