Halloween House Decorators Inspire All By Concocting Giant Floating Max Mayfield
One of the more brilliant pre-release strategies Netflix had for Stranger Things 4 was to release a screenshot of what appeared to be the backside of the character Max, suspended in midair, arms stiffly outstretched, in the middle of a graveyard. At the time, no one knew what this meant. It was the most perplexing thing the show had revealed about the upcoming season. The shot was repeated in a brief clip during the trailers, again with no explanation. “Can she fly now?” asked one Popgeeks commenter.
The brilliance of the Max screenshot was that once you realized what it DID mean, you were that much more invested. Season 4’s first episode concluded with another teenager assuming Max’s pose shortly before being twisted apart in midair. The full plan of the villain Vecna was revealed and it was established that by the time his victims get to the point where they’re flying, they have seconds to live. And then viewers remembered the Max screenshot, and despaired for her.
Chicago suburbanites Dave and Audrey Appel, both fans of Halloween and Stranger Things, decided to combine those interests to create one jaw-dropping yard decoration. Their goal: mock up a mannequin of Max and recreate the second most horrific moment of her life with it. This required the mannequin to float in midair, but…they pulled it off and it’s creating buzz from around the country.

Max is just one piece from a gigantic set of Hollywood monsters that the Appels estimate took over 1,000 hours to fully assemble (they started August 1). But it’s Ms. Mayfield that’s attracting onlookers. The yard has gone viral, bringing in so many visitors that neighbors started complaining. And the couple refuses to tell anyone how Max is flying. There are no wires, no balloons, and no drones involved. Visitors can walk right under it. It’s a mystery at the moment.
The neighbor complaints reached city officials and threatened to sink Sink, but Dave and Audrey are currently meeting with local officials to make sure the yard meets safety codes and can remain up through Halloween.
