Half Of Switch Final Fantasy X & X2 Is Download-Only
If you care about physical releases, this sure sucks. The boxart for the European Switch version of Final Fantasy X & X2 HD Remaster was leaked, thanks to merchant UK GAME…..and it mentions that only Final Fantasy X is actually, physically on the card. Final Fantasy X-2 requires a separate download.
Square confirmed this on their US website. There is now a notice on the page for the game:
Important information: FINAL FANTASY X HD Remaster available on game card. FINAL FANTASY X-2 HD Remaster game content is download only. Single-use voucher included. Internet connection required. microSD card may be required.
And in case you miss the notice on the site, Square’s put it front and center on the cover. Yeesh, that’s ugly:
This has happened with frustrating frequency among Switch releases, mainly due to the cost of ordering game cards big enough to contain full games. As a cost-saving measure, a lot of companies pick the small size and then require a digital download for the rest. For collectors and preservationists, it takes the whole point out of buying physical copies.
Oh well, Square just couldn’t fit both games onto that little card. Except they can. The Japanese and Southern Asian releases of Final Fantasy X & X2 HD Remaster WILL contain both games, no download required. Why, then, is the sequel removed from the Western version??
There is a simple solution, thankfully. If you want a complete physical copy super-badly, the Japanese version will do just fine. It contains English voices and subtitles, and the Switch is region-free. The only downside is that foreign cards aren’t eligible for the Nintendo Gold Rewards program — which means you won’t get fifty cents off your next purchase. But you can’t have everything!
Final Fantasy X & X-2 HD Remaster will arrive on Switch April 16.
