Games Done Quick Presents: Corona Relief Done Quick
To the surprise of no one, Games Done Quick has decided to postpone its summer charity event. The plan is still to hold it in the summer, but around August instead of June, assuming things get somewhat better by then. But wait a minute…if there was ever a time we needed a charity event that attracts millions of viewers AND dollars, it’s now, right?
That’s what GDQ was thinking too. Presenting Corona Relief Done Quick: three days of nonstop video game speedrunning by the world’s fastest button mashers, only this time streamed live from their own houses instead of in a hotel ballroom. Just like in the regular GDQ, there will be giveaways, special showcases and incentives that can only be met if donations cross a certain threshold. The organization benefiting is Direct Relief, described by GDQ as a humanitarian group that “improve[s] the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies.”
For a lineup pulled together at the last minute, CRDQ’s sounds pretty excellent. On the first day alone we have Donkey Kong Country, Sonic Mania, Celeste, Dark Souls, Halo, and an Ocarina of Time randomizer race where all the items will be in different places. Day 2 will bring with it a Castlevania 2-loop race, Cuphead, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Viewtiful Joe, and — somehow — Alien Isolation from beginning to end in 35 minutes. Finally, Sunday’s got a Pokemon Sword Any% run, a Link to the Past race, Mega Man 9, the required Super Metroid, and the whole marathon will cap itself off with Kingdom Hearts II.
Corona Relief Done Quick begins early in the morning on Friday, April 17, and runs through April 19. Check it out on its Twitch stream.
