Gamecube Controller Support Added To Switch Version Of Super Mario Sunshine
When Super Mario 3D All-Stars was released on Switch last September, it had several glaring issues: you couldn’t invert the camera controls. Super Mario 64 was still in the 4:3 ratio even though Super Mario Sunshine was expanded to widescreen. A whole game was missing from the collection (Super Mario Galaxy 2). And you couldn’t play Mario Sunshine with a Gamecube controller even though an adapter exists for that.
We figured none of these problems would be solved because Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a limited-run product, irritatingly set to be pulled off the shelves at the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year (March 31). Looks like we were thankfully wrong, because a patch just went out that address some of the complaints. Inverted camera controls were added to the games today, and not only that, using a Gamecube controller in Sunshine is now possible.
It’s kind of a big deal because Sunshine was made to take advantage of that specific controller in ways that all other controllers in existence can’t. The Gamecube had a unique set of shoulder buttons that sank in gradually until they clicked at the end. This made it possible to gradually increase the speed in which Mario shoots water from the FLUDD. With the Switch’s traditional controllers, only two preset speeds are available, selected from the two right shoulder triggers.
As for the other two issues, it would take a lot more effort to expand Mario 64 to 16:9 and throw in a whole extra game. But we’d love to be surprised! Nintendo’s patch notes are reproduced below.
