Game Of Thrones Producers To Helm New Star Wars Saga
Game of Thrones ends its run in 2019, but show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will have no issue with unemployment. They’ve been picked up by Disney and Lucasfilm to create their own slice of the Star Wars universe. This would be a series of movies, not a TV show.
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement released this morning. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
“Wait a minute…..wasn’t Rian Johnson hired to continue Star Wars?” you may be thinking. He was, and nothing has changed there. Benioff and Weiss’s series will be separate from Johnson’s. Neither of these projects have anything resembling a release date — they are essentially babies sucking on pacifiers at this point. When they begin walking and talking, we’ll spread the news.
