Game Of Thrones Producers Helming Next Star Wars Trilogy
It is well known that Disney plans to restart Star Wars with a new trilogy, in another galaxy far far away, in a time far far away (2022 at the earliest). What we’ve assumed until now was that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would be making them. The only chatter coming from the Mouse House has been from Johnson, who’s stated multiple times that he’s working up a Star Wars trilogy.
We’ve been thrown a curveball: Disney and Lucasfilm announced this morning that the executive producers of the next trilogy will be in fact David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, also known as the guys behind Game of Thrones.
When CEO Big Iger was planning out the day of this announcement, he likely picked the week before the final episode because he figured GoT hype would be deafening. It sort of is, but not for the reasons he had been hoping. Without getting into too many spoilers, millions of fans are enraged about a certain twist, regarding a certain beloved character, that seemed to come out of nowhere (although there have been hints dating back to Season 1).
Now is not the time to be associating yourself with the guys who made that twist happen. And yet here they are. The yolk’s on you, Bob.
Though the silver screen will not bear the Star Wars logo for at least three years after Rise Of Skywalker, be assured that Star Wars-ian material will still be produced with regularity. The Disney+ streaming service has THREE TV shows in development set within that universe: The Mandalorian, a Rogue One prequel, and a third series Iger just revealed today without saying anything else about it. Plus, there’s also Star Wars Resistance on Disney Channel.
