Free SSX update adds synchronous multiplayer and Freeride
Today, Electronic Arts has released a free update for the PS3 version of SSX that introduces synchronous multiplayer, as well as a ‘no rules’ Freeride mode.
Patch 1.02, which brings SSX to version 3.0, adds 3-2-1-GO! events to SSX’s online Global Events playlist. These events allow players to compete with up to five others in real time across Trick It and Race It heats.
Via the European PlayStation forums, SSX Community Team Leader ‘Envisager‘ explains further:

In these events, the helicopter acts as your lobby. After joining a 3-2-1-GO! Event you will be taken to the top of the drop, where you will then wait in the helicopter for other riders to join. As soon as at least one more rider shows up, you can choose to buy into the event and ready-up!
Once at least two riders have readied, a countdown timer will begin, and when it reaches zero the heat will start with all riders jumping out together for a single trip down the mountain with no restarts.
Once everyone makes it down to the bottom, the event ends and everyone collects their credit rewards. You are then given the option to return back to the top or follow a RiderNet recommendation to another 3-2-1-GO Event.

And, if you only want to challenge your friends, or play your favourite drop on your terms, you can create private 3-2-1-GO! race and trick events and tailor the rules to suit your fancy. Gnarly.
Freeride mode, meanwhile, lets players enjoy the breath-taking wintery world of SSX without clocks, scores, ghosts or competitors. After selecting your rider and gear, the helicopter will drop you off and the HUD will disappear; from then on, it’s just you, your music, and the mountain ahead.
Currently, it is not known when the update will be available to Xbox 360 owners, but we’ll do our best to keep you posted as and when more information surfaces.
