When W was first on and I was watching regularly, I though Kirihiko would be a double agent trying to bring down the Sonozakis from within, based on his snooping behavior. Now I've finally begun finishing the rest of the show and past episode 18 when he dies.... and nothing is answered? Who is he? Why did he start selling Memories? What did he think the Sonozakis and Museum were? Maybe I was on the right track after all but Riku Sanjo or someone else suddenly decided to kill him off without any real resolution? Kirihiko's existence doesn't make any sense.

Does this get answered eventually, or is Kirihiko forgotten once Terui arrives?

[hide]I don't think anything was ever answered. There's a two-parter in the 30's dealing with his sister and Saeko's later upgrade so he's not forgotten but, I dunno if you're gonna get your answers.[/hide]

He was made to show us the inside of the family how it would look like to an outsider. He's the average Joe who thought he was helping humans evolve and he had his own morals. He did not mind adults consenting to corrupting themselves for the greater good. He only felt remorse when he saw kids being manipulated too. He really went way over his head and suffered his fate to show the cruelty of the family. He was never one to snoop and was a loyal person. However he had a change of heart.
Kirhiko wanted to be part of the family he wanted to help the gaia memory production. But once he found out things he didn't like he had a change of heart. It's really that simple.
Honestly I don't know where you got the idea he was a mole as he never hinted it. He always wanted to be part of the family.

I was thinking this too. He moved the story along somewhat i felt. I liked him as a character and was soo mad he got killed. Even though Saeko is one of my fave baddies of all time.

There are scenes in certain episodes where we see him eavesdropping on the others' conversations and trying to hide from them. I think it's pretty obvious that he was implied to be doing his own investigation.

Putting aside a possibly twisted moral sense, why would he possibly think that what the Sonozakis were doing was noble? Why all the secrecy then? Wouldn't all the crimes being conducted by the people who buy Memories and his wife and inlaws' lack of caring tip him off? When he first said he loved Futo, it seemed to me a hint as to what he was really doing.

What you're saying might make sense if we didn't have all of these scenes with him going deeper and deeper inside the organization, but rather him remaining just a salesman who occasionally meets with the higher ups. But even there he would come off as quite naive.

IMO, he was first put on there as an allusion to the Sonozaki's motivations being the dark side of the "Love for Fuuto", then he was killed off in order to further Saeko's plunge into despair and jealousy.

He was naive actually. His whole moral process is rather flawed but that was part of his character. He actually did mention in an episode or two he thought his work was noble for fuuto and humanity however flawed he was.
I assumed his eavesdropping was mostly him trying to stay in the family's favor. No better way to know how to make yourself look good infront of the boss then information. He knew a lot of things he shouldn't have but he never did anything against the family till his turning point. Remember the episode where he realized he should rebel against family it's as if his reality was shattered and he realized this wasn't the best for the city he loved or humanity in general. Honestly I know he might of listened in on a conversation or two but it seemed more to gain standing in the family rather than using it against them.

If he had so much faith in the family and had no suspicions, why sneak around at all? Just be open and direct. He doesn't have to hide in order to hear about how unsatisfying he is. It could just be a casual dinner conversation where he gets more and more determined to prove that Saeko didn't make a mistake in marrying him.

He's a member of the family now, there is no reason for him to act so shady around them unless he had an ulterior motive. I could buy that they were suspicious of him, and he knew it, thus the discreetness in order to ultimately expose them. But your argument that he was a true believer all along just doesn't match the behavior we see.
