Hey! Captain Shark is here! Welcome to the thread, Captain. You've come to just the right place to share your opinions.

I am holding back a lot due to character limits.

Holding back?! Oh no, please, do go on! Don't hold back on our behalf. Make multiple posts if you need to. We need to see the FULL dissertation on all this and more. I've been on PINS and NEEDLES hoping that you'll talk about why Kamen Rider Build is terrible again for the 3rd or 4th time. We're all just DYING to hear what you have say. :D

No, it's really not. Sarcasm is an expression of the OPPOSITE thing you want. I still believe this is the right place for some of your opinions, especially the ones that very few people agree with. But it's up to you on how much of those opinions you actually share here.

Oh, and if you're going to report Dr Kain for that comment, you might as well report me too (and maybe anyone that's ever disagreed with you, depending on how offended you feel). The Trump comment might have been going too far, but if Kain really wanted to insult or attack you, I think he could do worse.

lmao Oh, you know me so well. :p Not sure why he apparently reported me, but that's okay, snowflakes are adorable. ;)

Here's my unpopular opinion - Ultraman Leo sucks! It was boring beyond comprehension and Dan was an utter asshole. Also, they did what they did to the cast of the show because they wanted attention not because it improved the already lackluster story.

Back with more salt for y'all!

Fanservice doesn't really work in toku. It clashes horribly with the tones of pretty much every Rider/Sentai/Ultra series. In Garo it feels a bit desperate - like they're saying "hey we showed a topless woman because we're sooo edgy...please don't compare us to the Sunday morning shows".
Which is not to say that there isn't or shouldn't be anyone attractive in these shows, just that shoving it in our faces often has the reverse reaction for me.

The poster boy for bad fanservice has to be Koichi Sakamoto, who has a long history of creating unique (and often great) action scenes but then in recent years has begun insisting that every project he's directing includes an action girl wearing a tiny pair of shorts. He then spends the action scenes zooming the camera into close-ups of their thighs while they do high kicks - sometimes to the extent that you can't tell what is happening in the scene at all - just so he can leer at them. And yes, actress Mikie Hara did confirm in an interview that it's totally because he has a leg fetish and enough clout that nobody is willing to tell him to knock it off. The guy needs to get laid and stop spoiling his action scenes.

On a completely different note - I never cared for King Ghidorah in the Godzilla movies. I haven't seen the recent anime trilogy so I don't know what he's like in that, but in his previous appearances he was really boring and it's a shame that he's become regarded as "Godzilla's greatest foe". I feel that title should really go to Mecha Godzilla. And of course, Mothra is always Queen. I always liked the more offbeat monsters like Hedorah or Ebirah too.

If someone was curious about the Showa-era Gamera films, I would tell them to just watch Gamera Super Monster. Yes, just that one. Yes, I know it's basically just a compilation of the fights from the previous films - That's the point. The bonkers battles are the only reason to watch those films anyway, so if you can see those parts without having to crawl through the rest then you should totally do that.

Having said that, if someone were to insist on watching more than one, the first two movies (Gamera The Giant Monster & Gamera vs Barugon) are good efforts and Gamera vs Jiger has probably the most competently told story out of the rest...provided you have a strong enough stomach to withstand the (brief but gruesome) scene containing genuine stock footage of an elephant with a trunk full of parasites.
Decade is best enjoyed if you're familiar with Multiverse theory/tropes, and therefore expect changes going in to it. And coincidentally, I agree that some parallel worlds were better than their original! Because you mentioned it, World of Amazon was interested despite the weak actor they got for him, but I would pay money to see World of Kabuto as a full show!
I suppose I can better understand the Decade hate now that I'm watching Zi-O and finding the way that it treats previous heroes to be really grating.

I agree that the actor for the AU Amazon was pretty weak, but I really liked how they managed to show this bleak situation where he's the last free man on the run in a world otherwise completely taken over by Shocker, trying in vain to find a way to save the brainwashed population. Plus the re-imagined 10-Faced Demon has to be one of the best re-designs of a villain ever.
Also, The Brave is the worst movie Daiei ever produced in their Kaiju films.
Aww I really liked Gamera The Brave. It really felt like they captured the "friend to all children" aspect of the character and even took it a step beyond the Showa entries without making the kids anywhere near as annoying as the old films did.
Because Revenge of Iris ended on a cliffhanger...
When I watched the film it felt like they had reached the natural end point of that story. I didn't feel disappointed as I did with, for example, the Ryuki movie. I didn't need to see him fight even more Gyaos; The narrative arc was already complete.

The director claims that as the movie is about faith (they even have the main characters spell out that 'so long as people believe in Gamera he will always be victorious') he decided to end it on a test of faith for the audience. If the person watching the film knows that Gamera would win, they can take it for granted that he does. If they doubt whether he would, then the Gyaos won and it's because of your lack of faith in your turtley savior.
That's what they call Shin Godzilla in english, what's the problem?
No, they call Shin Godzilla Shin Godzilla in English.
IIRC Toho did originally say that the film's English language title was "Godzilla Resurgence" but it never really caught on and was eventually abandoned in favor of simply using the Japanese name. It seems that the Captain is hanging on to that early title (but yes, my British copy of the Blu Ray has 'Shin Godzilla' written on the front too so that's the name I'd use).
Here's my unpopular opinion - Ultraman Leo sucks! It was boring beyond comprehension and Dan was an utter asshole. Also, they did what they did to the cast of the show because they wanted attention not because it improved the already lackluster story.
I loved the 'Ultra Seven' series but then 'Ultraman Leo' completely destroys his character. Dan/Seven spends so much time beating up Leo that I'm tempted to claim that he was the true villain of the show. As for Leo, well I love an underdog but he spends so much time curled up in the fetal position cowering from Dan's cane that it's difficult to see him as the mighty hero who will save the world.

Still, it's the only Ultra series that remembered that Taro quit being an Ultraman at the end of his own series and shouldn't turn up again.

I wonder how many #MeToo stories there might be about the guy.

No offense to rangergod or anyone that makes topics like this, but what makes a tokusatsu opinion popular or unpopular? It's kind of hard to say when the fandom pool is so small; especially here.

You'd have better luck measuring which Power Rangers seasons are the most popular. For the stuff from Japan, unless you know how most Japanese fans feel, it's kind of hard to tell which seasons of Super Sentai/Kamen Rider/Ultraman/etc. are popular or not. Seems like for everyone praising one show, there is just as many people who didn't care for it. Heck, there's more people talking about it on YouTube and other places than message boards like this.

Not to mention, even with the absolute best fansubs or official subtitles, you still lose something in translation. Unless you understand the Japanese cultural perspective, it's kind of hard to know what counts as good acting or not if all you have is a western idea of good acting. It's hard to tell what counts as a good story if different things connect with audiences from different nationalities. Nuances in performances and get lost. Etc.
