It's a cold, snowy night here with nothing to do, so I sat down and watched a film about a tropical island...Ebirah, Horror of the Deep!

I haven't heard it mentioned so much by fans, and I can kinda see why. It's very obvious that Godzilla's part was written for Kong. Seeing as this came out just a few months after War of the Gargantuas, I'm almost surprised they didn't just use Frankenstein (either in original "...Conquers the World" form or the "Sanda" version) and release it in '67. It would have probably been a better fit. The giant condor was pointless, and it needed much more Mothra (because IMO every film needs more Mothra).

Having said that, so many of these films are basically just sitting through the first hour trying not to get too bored while waiting for the monster fight in the third act, and this film did manage to keep me interested from the start with the boatjacking, sneaking around on the island etc. So I have to give it some credit for being 87 minutes of entertainment rather than just ten.

Ebirah is actually a solid entry in the series imo. I'm currently watching all Godzilla movies in order, since I've never done that before, but I have watched every one a million times when I was younger.

I found that after going back and watching these as an adult, I'm enjoying the ones that I wouldn't care for when I was a kid and getting frustrated with the ones that I used to love.

For example, I used to enjoy Godzilla vs. Hedorah and Godzilla vs. Megalon a lot. After watching those recently, GvsH had uninteresting human characters and the fights were long, slow, and drawn-out. GvsM had the cheesiest fight scenes in any Godzilla movie. It was so frustrating that I found myself playing with my phone during the latter half of that movie.

I'd only ever heard bad things about King Kong Escapes, but I've just watched it and it's SUCH a fun movie! :anime: Certainly better than Son of Godzilla :redface2:

It's a shame Toho never got to make any other Kong movies. Even more of a shame that we'll never get more Mechani-Kong action :disappoin

I kind of agree there, it would have at least been interesting to see the version of Frankenstein, which was supposed to be a patch work of animals sewn together that they planned on, read it somewhere online just can't remember where.

Godzilla is still popular in Poland, they started show movies in theatre in 60`s and 80`s, not every movie was brought here, and often with at least few years after it release (iron curtain) i even manage to get some of awesome Polish posters:

My biggest dissapointment is last Showa film, Terror of Mechagodzilla, it had boring characters (and not attractive love interest) stupid looking villains (Aliens helmets, stereotypical mad scientist) they made Mechagodzilla weak, most of time he only stood and watch, while Titanosaurus fought Godzilla, weakest Ishiro Honda film iin my opinion

You gotta love how when Shusuke Kanedo, director of the Gamera Trilogy, got a shot at a Godzilla film, he made GMK, one of the best Godzilla movies of all time.

I been a Godzilla fan for nearly 20 years now. The franchise always been my main favorite and I'm looking forward to the upcoming the 2014 film. I'm hoping that we will get a decent American film for once.

Destroy All Monsters: Proving that Anguirus is the 'stone wall' of giant monsters, mankind will indeed one day learn to control the nuclear spectre of Godzilla, and (perhaps most importantly) that Ghidorah is still an overrated pussy

Strange. I felt many of his films after 1965 were dismal after the fact save for War of the Gargantuas, which was pretty sweet. He clearly lost his thunder with the franchise at that point.

I loved GMK too and I wish he was given a chance to do a series of films like Gamera with his iteration of Godzilla.

Very true, great stuff. GMK is my fav, I was lucky enough to see it in a theater here in the states too.
