  Aggressive rollout ahead for Power Rangers
  
  The return of the Power Rangers to Saban Brands will mean an aggressive rollout onto multimedia platforms, a new Samurai theme and even a bit more "fun," according to Saban Brands prexy Elie Dekel.
  "We're embracing the new digital media age," said Dekel of the planned apps, games and streaming content, adding that Ranger-related live entertainment and a feature film are on the horizon. Saban Brands also announced the Samurai theme for the upcoming season, premiering next year on Nickelodeon. While themes changed annually in years past, the Samurai theme will extend for two years.
  
  "We always introduce new elements throughout the course of the season, including the occasional new ranger," said Dekel, adding that Saban will keep the five original rangers and other core elements of the nearly 20-year-old "Power Rangers" series.
  
  "The DNA remains constant," Dekel added.
  
  New announcements come on the heels of Saban's re-acquisition of the series from Disney in May ( Daily Variety , May 14). The Mouse House had purchased the series from Saban in 2001. The company will also bring back Jonathan Tzachor, who produced hundreds of episodes since the early nineties.

• 700 old episodes (original MMPR to RPM) will air on Nicktoons 7 days a week!
• The new season will feature 43 episodes. (source)
• Jonathan Tzachor will be in charge of the new 18th season. Tzachor has been a producer on Power Rangers since the beginning with MMPR and was responsible for many fan favorite seasons such as InSpace and Time Force.
• Tony Oliver has confirmed that he is writing for the 2011 season of Power Rangers.
• Saban is making deals for a movie. Nothing else has been announced. Most likely it will through Paramount Films, which Nickelodeon is allied with. Nickelodeon has been developing a new film division, with Ninja Turtles being one of the productions.
• Movie production workers from Auckland, such as costume designers and set painters are being offered three-year contracts on [TV show] Power Rangers. (this means Saban is serious about quality with Power Rangers!)
• Ron Wasserman will not be returning to perform music for the show in any capacity.
• Brian Casentini will help develop new Power Rangers skein -- Haim Saban's new shingle Saban Brands has named Brian Casentini veep of development and production.
• Nickelodeon/Paramount might not have the dvd rights to Power Rangers. It's rumored Saban Brands is looking for a third party to publish and distribute such dvds.

  The long-running show has morphed into many forms over the years: it was established in 1993 as the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, since then the series has gone through 14 more incarnations (not to mention a pair of theatrical movies!) through to 2009's Power Rangers RPM. The shows were originally produced by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy at Saban Entertainment. In 1995 Fox wanted to establish their loosely-named "Fox Kids" lineup as an actual company holding that became "Fox Family Worldwide", and a merger with Saban Ent. was part of that process (generally speaking, it was Fox that produced the two Power Ranger box office films, and it is thought that Fox therefore continues to hold rights to them even now, as a result). In 2001, Fox sold off the "Fox Family Worldwide" subsidiary to Disney, where it became ABC Family Worldwide. With that sale Saban stopped producing any of these series as of Power Rangers Wild Force; mid-show Disney/Buena Vista took over production. But Disney ended production of new episodes in 2009 with RPM, and for the 2010 season only re-purposed the original Morphin' episodes for broadcast. There have been roughly 30 DVD releases in the USA over the years (including the two films), but all have been single-disc releases, often of a "themed"/"best-of" nature; it is rare for any of the 15 Power Rangers programs to have every episode released on DVD in the States. Although Disney-affiliated Jetix has caused season-set releases of various PR incarnations to happen overseas, Disney has shown little interest in doing similar packages in North America. Nor had they come to the negotiating table when "indie" studios (such as Shout! Factory) expressed an interest in licensing the DVD rights. This has been the hold-up for Power Rangers season sets thus far. A week ago, however, it was announced that Haim Saban's newly-formed Saban Brands company had re-acquired the rights to the original 15 programs from Disney. The following day a press release announced that Saban Brands had finalized a deal with Nickelodeon to begin re-airing the existing 700 episodes on the NickToons channel, with a new 16th incarnation of the show planned to broadcast on Nickelodeon and NickToons in 2011. In the past week, we've received e-mails from passionate fans, who assume this means that Nickelodeon/Paramount MUST therefore have the DVD rights to these old episodes, yes? Well, hold on there...don't go assuming that! NOTHING in any of the public announcements has mentioned home videos rights. It's possible that Nick/Par did acquire those rights, on the other hand we know that several indie studio (including Shout!) are speaking to Saban Brands about the possibility of releasing Power Ranger DVDs through their companies. Whatever happens, it won't be immediately (because it still takes time to produce a DVD, of course). We'll keep an eye on it, but right now nothing is assured in the way of a DVD release just yet. However, things are looking up for the first time in a while; perhaps the long wait will soon be over!

  When Haim Saban reacquired Power Rangers from Disney in May, he led them to believe that the series was headed for the new kids network The Hub. After it was sold to him, he went straight to Nickelodeon. Cyma Zarghami, President of Nickelodeon, was quick to accept his offer. The 700-episode series as well as the new season Power Rangers Samurai are coming to Nickelodeon and Nicktoons in early-2011.
  With Power Rangers as a main example, Nickelodeon has loosened its policy on acquiring shows that they don’t own themselves to broadcast and support with Nickelodeon’s powerful marketing.

  
  

  Power Rangers,†the martial arts series, is a prime example. Ms. Zarghami made a deal in May with the investor Haim Saban, who owns the series, to bring 20 new episodes and 700 reruns to Nickelodeon and Nicktoons starting early next year.
  
  The deal was a jab at Disney, which had just sold “Power Rangers†to Mr. Saban. Disney was under the impression that he planned to license the show not to the rival Nickelodeon but to the Hub, a less-threatening children’s channel that is a joint venture of Discovery Communications and Hasbro.
  
  Mr. Saban says he is impressed with how quickly Ms. Zarghami acted when he approached her about a deal. “The conversation took two minutes,†he says. He describes her as “very tough†but also “super professional†in negotiations. “I always ask for some compassion,†he adds, “but I don’t get very far.â€

She is confident, intuitive, and sensitive. MIA was raised by her grandmother, away from her parents. Her toughness and desire to help others is a cover for the pain she felt during her childhood separation from her mother. She is the mother/big sister of the Rangers. MIA's dream is to become a wife and mother and lead a normal life. However, due to her upbringing, her image of that "normal" life is childish and disconnected from reality.

Mia is a confident, sensitive big sister to the Power Rangers. She is so eager to give that sometimes her own needs get overlooked. She considers herself to be a great cook, but you'd have a hard time finding another Ranger who agreed. One thing they can agree on is that Mia is a crucial part of their monster-fighting family.

EMILY is the youngest Ranger and is loved and cared for by all. She is innocent, sweet, and gentle, but also very strong when needed. She was raised in the country and comes to the city for the first time when she joins the Rangers. Her older sister was supposed to be the Yellow Ranger, but when she fell ill, EMILY had to take her place. During her early childhood, she always relied on her sister, who would play the flute to console young EMILY. After her illness, the roles were reversed and it became EMILY who played the flute to console her weak older sister. She constantly is plagued by the feeling that she will not live up to what her sister might have been as a Ranger.

Emily is a sweet, innocent country girl who was never supposed to be a Power Ranger. It was her sister who was destined for the squad, but an illness forced Emily to take her place. MIKE is the Green Ranger. He is creative, rebellious, irreverent, and
lazy; but never afraid to think outside the box. He lost his mother at an
early age and grew up mostly with his father, who was more of a big
brother and friend than a role model. When he first joins the other
Rangers, he realizes that his upbringing did not properly prepare him to
be a warrior. He is also a high school dropout.
MIKE is very creative in battle and despite a relaxed and care free
attitude, he longs to be the best fighter he can be, even hoping to, one-
day surpass, JAYDEN. He knows there is much hard work ahead of him and does

He is also a bit of a mama's boy, although he would never admit it.

He also is a programmer and is constantly developing new weapons for the Rangers. His element is light and he is the most outgoing and positive of the group. Unashamed of his humble origins, he is honored and grateful to fight as a Power Ranger. He is an excellent fighter and total team player.

In trouble? Are you joking? Thanks to you, I will be able to open my own restaurant. I've been interviewed for magazines! Gold Sushi is famous!

AVA
Are you sure this is what you want?

WESLEY
Of course! It's my life's dream.

AVA
Is it?

WESLEY's happy face fades.

WESLEY sits.

WESLEY
Ever since I took over for my father, I promised myself that I would someday turn this place into a great restaurant. When I was a kid, my father sold this business and I was so upset about it, I ran away from home. I'm starting to understand more why he did it.

AVA
Wesley...

WESLEY
Even if it's not exactly how I imagined it, I still get to open a restaurant, right. I can always serve sushi too.

AVA sits opposite him. She pretends to be a customer.

AVA
I would like one piece of sushi, please.

WESLEY prepares a tuna roll and serves AVA.

WESLEY
Here you are.

She takes a bite. It's bad. Wesley looks disappointed.

AVA
It doesn't taste as good. Tastes kind of like curry.

You're injured. Let me see.

SADIE

all I wanted to do was play house, pretend I was the mom, but...I always had to practice, to train...I'm sorry for talking this way. I don't quite feel like myself.

SADIE
Sometimes, I just wish I could have a normal life; become a

SADIE

WESLEY and BARON sit in a cave. Some evil foot soldiers pass by, but do not see them. Wesley ties his wounded shoulder with a rag while BARON tries to make a call on his cell phone.

BARON
No reception here either.

WESLEY tries to get up.

WESLEY
Let's go back up or else the girls will-

BARON pulls him back down.

BARON
You can't fight like that. I'll go alone.

WESLEY
There's no way you'll make it.

BARON stands up to leave.

WESLEY tries to get up but at first is too weak. BARON is attacked by foot soldiers and WESLEY comes and saves him.

WESLEY grabs BARON's shirt.

WESLEY
Heroes do not worry about themselves when others are in need.

WESLEY and BARON lock stares.

BARON
It looks like you might be a hero after all. Let's see how you fight when the odds are stacked against you.

WESLEY
Let's go. We'll show them what we can do together.

WESLEY begins to ascend. BARON stays behind.

BARON

The door opens and Wesley stumbles in as he was trying to eavesdrop on their conversation. Embarrassed, he leaves.

PRINCESS
Forgive Wesley. He only tries to protect me.

REESE

PRINCESS
I always wondered what my double would be like.

PRINCESS turns towards Reese and smiles.

PRINCESS

Sadie noticed it too, I think, but hasn't said anything to me. Maybe she's trying to protect me. I don't know...I am just starting to realize it now but I'm sure it has happened in the past, I was just totally unaware.

Ava stands and takes a few steps towards the garden. She notices the full moon.

AVA
I know now that its not enough just to keep up with the others. I must also be mindful of my sister and what she would have done. She believes in me, believes that I do my best. But I need to try even harder. I won’t let her down.

She walks off. Reese looks at the wrinkled letter in his hand.

Audition Controversy______

Guys, I have some pretty displeasing. Like...EXTREMELY displeasing. This comes from someone who I never was contacted by before, but is definitely involved with casting.

Apparently contracts came in today, and they were so ridiculous that during the screen testings...a lot of the actors/actresses walked out without signing. ...The would not let none of them audition "without" signing. It is said that most of them had no idea what was in the contract and could not audition without signing. Quite a few good actors walked out, which the end result could mean anything now.

In the contract, they cut the money WAY back! Iris had some good choices, but the people (producers I assume) were quote on quote, "ridiculous!" It is said that the role for Yellow went to a very "young looking" girl who looks like she could be 12. A few Pinks were left, but it is unsure who got that.

The Red rangers that were left are said to be all "American-looking" Caucasians, with all other roles pretty much filled up by those who looked like they Asian in them somewhere.

All in all, I have no words for this. Looks like Saban is still cheap. As for Lissa...well she's out. There is said to be some crap part in the contract saying that if you are part of the PRs then you cannot do
ANYTHING else until the end of 2012!

Guys, let's remember something here....

We're hearing this from agent, who's client(s) were NOT happy with the way thing went down. What might be "ridiculous" for one place, could be perfectly fine for another. And the "good actors" who walked, was all subject to a person's opinion and might not have been ANY of the one's we have seen (aside from Lissa).

I get this feeling this person must be an auditioner, because they seem to know quite a bit. Either way, what they posted brings a sense of relief:

Callbacks that went on today or yesterday technically went well. They expected people to not like the contracts. They were non-negotiable even though many actors contacted lawyers they wouldn't budge. The actors that came in with addendums did not make the final cut. All in all they still had about 4 people per role at the final mix and match.

The money issue is this. In the casting breakdown (notice) it said 1000 dollars plus 10% per day (for the agents). In the contract it said 700 dollars NEW ZEALAND dollars per day with no 10%. New Zealand is 75 cents on the US dollar. That's the rub. Also the 2012 thing is for conflicts i.e. all children's shows, movies, commercials that will be competition basically. The wording is slightly ambiguous so it may not be that awful. Also it says they can call you back anytime for other shows and movies. It also sets the rate for optional movies and commercials. The rate is lower than union rates.

The yellow ranger is supposed to look young. They didn't look twelve. There were four of them at the final mix and match. The red ranger is supposed to be white and I guess you could call them "all american" looking if you think all white people look american.

At the end of the day they still had way too many qualified people. Most actors were pretty new to acting, but after 3 callbacks their acting ability has been verified. However they never had the actors read with each other, only with the casting director for some reason. They told the actors that they should know the final cast by the latest on Monday.

Then after they pick their six they have an unpaid 2 week training period where any one of them can be cut anytime. Now that's shitty!

Yes there were a lot of Asian looking males, many of them mixed. But there were a number of Blacks and Whites so what. What might please you is that most of the people no matter what role have extensive martial arts or dance experience, even though the costumed characters are stunt people or even stock footage. Height and weight played a major factor as well as they said costumes would be transfered from over from I assume the Japanese version.

Actually, that further shows what a crap deal it is. The 700 NZ will equal 507 US dollars with the current exchange rate, on top of the 10 agency fee that they decided to get rid of which makes the rate barely 450 a day. Add the fact that they don't get ANY residuals from airings or promos, and that they can be working over 12 hour days with no overtime or double-time, and you can see that it's not mudslinging, it really is a crap deal. The exclusivity against other childrens programming is understandable, but the over 50% pay cut at the very last minute is just ridiculous

If you know anyone who was emailed the contract, maybe they'll let you see it. A lot of people who don't have managers or agents were sent it a few days ago as well as all of the reps from those involved. So there are a lot of them floating around. If you read it, you will understand why so many amazing, talented actors walked away. And a lot of entertainment attorneys have said that the producers actually commited an illegal act by making actors sign a contract "under duress" saying that they had to sign or they couldn't audition. I have a feeling we haven't heard the last of this yet.
I guess for all of us moms who have kids who work in this industry, it's sad because there was so much excitement and even though my kids are too small to be involved, they were so excited because who doesn't know about the Power Rangers? We knew of several girls and boys involved and a couple that went to the end.
It's sad what greed can do to people.

I asked the girl that went for Yellow if she knew anything about the contracts. She said that the sides they were given down here clearly requested agents NOT to send any actors that were not agreeable to a New Zealand contract for audition.They knew this before they auditioned so they definately were expecting to be paid at the NZ rate that is surprising the American actors. Perhaps it was all just a mix up and the producers were assuming the American agents would be aware that it would be a NZ contract.I hope that makes people feel a little better about it all.
