2020 is already the worst year ever for all of us living creatures right now and is also the worst year ever for one of the biggest billion-dollar companies, Walt Disney. They have to make a hard decision for survival.
Artemis Fowl was originally a cinematic release but ended up being a Disney+ original because of the Pandemic.
Mulan was supposed to be one of the movies to be released in cinemas this year, and with the expensive budget this movie has, it means they expect this film to make billions of dollars in the box office Just like the Live-action adaptations of Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty. (Maleficent)

I guess they had to release it sometime.

A $30 rental fee might not be too appetizing on a platform you're already paying $6.99 a month for.

Maybe they decided on $30 because normally a family of 3, 4 or 5 would go to a theater and pay more than that for the trip. But when you go to a theater, you're paying for a giant screen and sound system. Also, it's pretty tone deaf considering there are so many people out of work or on reduced income right now.
