Jorge Luis Borges (1899 - 1986) is one of the most famous and most important Latino-american writers. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in an ethnically mixed family. He used short literary forms (short stories, essays, poetry, literary criticism - in part due to his damaged vision) in which he successfully describes some issues that are part of his intellectual interest, topics mostly related to philosophy, metaphysics and fantasy. Most common "items" found in his works are - books, tigers, libraries, mirrors...items that he gives new philosophical meaning. In my opinion Borges is a great and unique literary phenomenon, that had influence on many writers (Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Umberto Eco, Orhan Pamuk, Salman Rushdie etc.). Most notable works - El Aleph, History of Eternity, The Book of Sand, Fictions etc.
