What's the difference in pronounciation? Aren't they just different spellings of the same word? One just makes the pun explicit.

I think he's implying that with the first spelling, the "-ger" ending is supposed to be pronounced like "her" instead of as "-jyaa" like how it would be done with a more "Japanese" pronunciation.
