The Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate games are damn good PC RPGs, they play very strictly off traditional pen and paper rules so if your familiar with AD&D it's pretty easy to get used to the system. They also have the advantage of being older (cheaper) and are pretty easy on system requirements. Additionally The NWN games have a heavy community backing, People are still making campaigns for the original game, and it would probably take you over a year to play through them all (there's a share of crap mixed in with the epic, but there are a lot of them that are worth playing)

DragonsAge is similar in that it has a heavy development community, and isn't that difficult to get into (though it's harder to pick master than the previous games)

Mass Effect 1 is a great game, and cheap, and carries over into ME 2, fortunately neither game are system whores.

There a lot more as well. Were you looking for a specific genre of RPG to narrow things down. Stratagy RPGs? Action RPGs?

World of Warcraft is fantastic and so is Aion if you dont mind paying monthly fees.

Other than that I would suggest Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Dragon Age, Star Wars Old Republic, anything from BioWare or Bethesda really.

Diablo 1 and 2 are great games. 3 wont be out for another year or two.

I wouldn't recommend Diablo 2 right now, its fucking crazy on Battlenet. New patch came out about a month ago and it allowed instant lvl 99 for a while. People from all over the world are jumping in just to slaughter each other and make a new character immediately (after getting some gear of course). Never have I seen such a global beat down in my many years of D2.

It's pretty old, but Septerra Core was pretty good from what I remember of it:

The KotOR series of games are often a good choice (same people who made Mass Effect and Baldur's Gate) especially if you have an interest in Star Wars.
Another game that's a bit more "Space-sim" based is Freelancer, a bit of an obscure game that meshes RPG elements and spaceship dog-fighting quite well. I'd look it up if you can find it, I've heard there is still a huge modding community for it these days.

Concerning MMORPGs of course, it depends on your preferences. I've never played WoW before or many of the major ones on the market, though I've heard both good, and bad, things about them. I've only dabbled in a few "semi-free" games such as Runescape (heavily story driven) or Earth Eternal (essentially WoW-ish MMO in a browser). But again it's up to you what to focus on.

can someoen tell me more about World of Warcraft ?.. Also really ?.. monthly fees?! Just how much is the monthly fee? I pay the $60 or whatever to play online with myxbox I guess I wouldn't mind for pc if it was not much more

WoW costs 14.99 a month. There is no sense of accomplishment with the game as with other single player RPGS. You just keep doing the same quests, same areas, and when you hit level 80 you either join a raid guild or you make a new level 1 and grind to 80 again. I was an avid WoW player, and I only suggest you play it if you like online games.

Wow, I haven't played on battlenet for years... I've got a level 87 Bowazon, but I can't really get any farther with her, she keeps dying too easily. And Valkyries are a joke.

But yeah, I loved both Diablo games, and as someone mentioned pretty much any of the games in the Baldur's Gate universe are awesome. Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, etc.
