How is he fucked? He knows he'll easily find work. He'd rather do a variety of work (both theatre and TV) than get typecast, so he quit on a high, and fair play to him for that. He prefers work variety to maximum income. I wish more celebs put other things before money.

Also take into consideration that he left Dr.Who for a chance to do Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company (which is basically THE top of the top when it comes to dramatic and theatre actors). If you're a serious actor (especially if you like doing theatrical acting like how Tennant and a lot of other actors do), if you are given a chance to work with the RSC, you take it.
