Call of Duty fans, breathe easy — you WILL be getting a new game in the series this year. After that, though…
Bloomberg reports that for the first time in nearly twenty years, the Call of Duty franchise will not release a game on an annual schedule. Instead, the series will go dormant for 2023, though we’re sure they’ll make up the difference by loading whatever game comes next with lots of DLC material. “Games as a service” and all that.
So why skip a year? Does it have something to do with the Microsoft buyout? No, not really — the takeover hasn’t been finalized yet; Activision is still technically independent. According to Bloomberg it has more to do with the last game released, 2021’s Call Of Duty Vanguard, not performing to sales expectations.
