£500M is a lot of money, but if they are trying to launch a new franchise rather than just one game it makes sense to come off the starting blocks strongly. They must be hoping to make it back by reusing most of the assets for later games, spin-offs and DLC.

It is amazing how much video game prices have increased, and unfortunately the development costs have really put the prices up on the shelves. If they would come out with more budget titles, it might be easier to get people into gaming again!
