Actually according to Herodotus, the Spartans did consult the Oracle of Delphi, which told Leonidas that to save the city a king of Sparta would die. If you want more historical accuracy than the movie, the history channel did a special on the real Battle of Thermopylae, it aired last weekend.

Actually I did catch part of that special >.> but overall I thought 300 was a good movie, and a even better Internet meme <.<

Herodotus was known for his inaccuracies though; sometimes horribly embellishing and sometimes completely making **** up. He probably dramatized most of that account.
