The closest example I can think of would be something like Kiddy Grade.

That would be one example. I didnt buy those though, I was with a friend at the time when he bought a couple. There was no way I was going to touch some of those dvds with those covers. (But then again, I'm glad I didnt buy em, the anime sucked.)

Some one should make a thread like this about PR stuff...

Except there's nothing wrong with liking PR. It's just a harmless TV show and if you buy the toys and are ashamed of that, you have a million and one excuses to give at the counter. Such as "buying them as a gift", "I review toys", "I'm writing an article!", "bla bla bla". I dont give any reasons I just buy them. Because it's one thing to let people know you like Power Rangers. Everyone knows I love the show. I just dont rub it in their face. And everyone knows I like anime. However, I hate the impression some people might get when I buy dvds with certain pornographic covers. Like a red warning signal that alarms the entire store "grown man is picking up anime involving large eyed girls hugging each other! Loser alert!"

I dont have many examples. I often go to the store to just look around and wont buy anything right away. So a lot of the titles in question I didnt buy nor can remember specifically. It's one of those things where you have to be in the store at the time to get the idea I'm stressin. Anyone who's had a shread of dignity and went anime shopping should know what I'm talking about.

Where the hell do you live? In my neck of the woods, It's seems more socially acceptable to buy near pornographic DVD covers of Anime, then to pick of a DVD of Power Rangers. That my friend, will get you the riot act multiple times over.

Of course, I could be bitter by being THE loser of the area I live, where everything I did basically became a Loser Magnet so I might not be the best judge.

well, I'm not so much "the" loser or anything but I dont know what to tell you. Ever since high school I've never hid the fact of what I like. Everyone knew I liked Sailor Moon and that I had the cds in my car. And if they got a ride from me, they had to listen to it. lol. They just accepted that, I guess. Same with Power Rangers. I dont buy PR dvds though. I just buy the toys (well not this year, the toys really suck this year.). And everyone knows that about me but I dont make it a habit of point that out. PR hardly comes up when I hanging out. just when we suddenly want to joke about Tommy.

It's not that I would be socially outcast by picking up a risky looking Anime title, that's not it. I, personally, just feel like I've lost some shred of dignity by picking up dvds with those covers. It has nothing to do with friends teasing about it, more like I personally hate holding Dvds that have those kinds of covers because it makes me feel like one of those fat basement dwellers.

Er, couldn't you just do that with anime too?

No... there's no excuse when buying an anime dvd, featuring two cartoon girls hugging, that will lower the sense of shame you have within you. There's no sense of shame buying a toy. Unless it's a hentai toy then you should feel like a loser, honestly. Who buys hentai toys? That's just an admission that you need to seek help.

Again it's not so much public perception that's the problem, it's self-shame for holding a dvd with such a cover. I just wish people who design the covers would think for a moment before slapping that **** on the cover.

Er, wow. Maybe you shouldn't watch anime then? :p

But yeah, guess it totally depends on the person. I'd feel there'd be more shame with a toy over a DVD, even if said DVD has a cover of anime girls hugging or whatever.

So apparently only us self respecting guys who actually give a rat's ass about our reputation care about being seen buying anime with weird covers in public. We all have our shame, don't deny it. You guys who spend way too much time by yourselves and not around people who do care if you are buying/have anime DVDs with weird covers aren't all too right.

Self-shame...now that's a whole other loaded question. Basically you're saying that you don't really care about what other people think of you if you buy an anime with scantily-clad chicks on the cover, but it's more a case of your personal beliefs? That just makes it harder for you, you know. You might be turned off from watching some really good stuff just because the cover repulses you. Your best bet as I see it is to get your anime online but if you're disgusted by the cover then what are you going to do?

Where I'm from, buying weird anime in public isn't normal.

I didn't say it was Normal, just more socially acceptable. I'd get less stares for buying a DVD of something like "Ouran High School Host Club" then I would if I picked up a DVD of any PR season.

And Grn, if you feel like owning those DVD covers make you feel like the sterotypical fat guy in the basement, then I have no advice for ya.
