IT IS FINALLY OVER! Before ranting I will note that literally at episode 35 the subs start to get to the infamous Hong Kong bad translation text with time stamping in the upper left corner. WHEN SHOUT FACTORY GIVES THIS A US RELEASE YOU ALL BETTER THANK THEM YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO READ ENDLESS BADLY TRANSLATED DRIVEL LIKE I DID! Anyway, aside from Blue and Yellow each getting one ep there was no more focus on the main trio, rather it all went to the Gouraigers AND Shurikenger! WHAT KIND OF ANYTHING IGNORES ITS MAIN CHARACTERS LIKE THIS- Oh yeah, Madoka Magica and Infinite Ryvius aka some of the absolute worst and THE absolute worst in animation history, respectively. The tone was questionable, it bounced around between serious and dark moments followed by goofy and light moments, giving a perception of inconsistency that is somewhat grating. The villains are fine, Sandaru was a solid replacement for Manmaruba and Sargain did have his moments to make him well rounded. The other underlings were not much of anything. Tau Zant was standard as far as sentai final bosses go and was pretty good overall (as he should). That said, most issues still resonated to the end complete with SLOWER pacing and the fact that NOBODY FREED THE NINJA STUDENTS DID THE PLOT LITERALLY FORGET ABOUT THAT!? Just for that I'm ranking this BELOW Liveman! I'd probably rank it to Megaranger's level except the wire work stunts were good, it tried to be action packed, effort was put into the suspense aspects, and they did not endlessly pad out the finale. So yeah, very meh sentai, I can't believe I'm proclaiming this, but /m/'s right about this: Definitely bottom tier and not much going for it. I can't blame Toei too much for this since the whole collectable thing was still new when they carried over from Gaoranger as they were competing with Pokemon and Ultraman Cosmos while working on their third Kamen Rider series in a row which was originally meant to be a Metal Heroes reimagining. Top that off with an anniversary season (and a big one) and I can imagine how hard it would be for Toei to define future sentai. Growing pains was a serious issue for media in general, not just for tokusatsu, but also for anime since the jump to CGI was extreme in the new millennium.

Time to rank stuff!

Hurricanger vs. Gaoranger might share the same post as the 10 Years Later movie, that has not been decided, but both will get looked at before taking on Abaranger. Since nobody protested this style it will be reviewed in the same manner.

Hurricanger vs. Gaoranger:

The Hurricangers slay a bunch of magerappas until the Gaorangers show up saying the Jakanja are their enemies too and proceed to attack the ninjas. The opening occurs with a shot of all the rangers included in the beginning. GaoWhite throws Hurricane Blue into the ocean where GaoShark does spin attacks. GaoYellow duels with Hurricane Yellow while GaoBlack throws Hurricane Red into a rock. GaoRed catches Hurricane Red's sword and does punching. Oboro tries contacting the trio when their Royal Beast Blades fire lasers at them. The Hurricangers ditch their costumes and flee, the Gaorangers calling them weak. At Oboro's home they fele down they lost, but Oboro and and maser look them up on the internet where it is revealed they were rightous warriors before Centipede came to Earth. Cut to Centipede where Satarakura calls the operation a success, Wendinu and Furabijo being proud while Sargain and Manmaruba are pleased. A guy named Chubouzu walks in not wanting to be left out since he helped. Also this guy is Chuuzubo's younger brother as he brags how much better he is. The villains bicker and Tau Zant will grant him the title of Second Spear if he succeeds. Meanwhile, the Gaorangers attack the Gouraigers, they are about to fire the Double Gadget when the Hurricangers show up to say they are good guys. The Gaorangers go into human form, Red mentions how they fought orgs, and it becomes apparent they do not care. Vulgarity ensues, the Gouraigers note their hearts have turned now. Eventually they transform back and summon their gao jewels which summon GaoKing's power animals that form it. Senpujin and Gouraijin fight GaoKing in a city, GaoGiraffe shows up for a Neck Thrust to be used on Gouraijin. Hurrier Mode is used to fight them, unaware the real Gaorangers and Tetom are chaind up in what I assume is GaoRock- Where is White? Oh she is running on a beach. The Animal Heart fires on Senpujin to knock it on a hill. Before the Fin Blade can strike, White tells GaoKing to stop. GaoLion recognizes this and forces the fake Gaorangers out followed by the Power Animals mouth laser firing them. Chubouzu realizes White escaped and proceeds to torture them. At Oboro's place, GaoWhite explains that Chubouzu captured them all and placed talismans on their necks which restricts movements and allows replicas of their biological data. The Gouraigers wonder how the Jakanja learned of the Gaorangers when we find out Chubouzu were helped by none other than Yab and Tsue. Since last we saw them they had rocks falling on them it is possible they survived. Chubouzu gives them permission to dispose of their old foes in any manner in return for letting him know about them. The Hurricangers offer to help GaoWhite as the other Gaorangers are beaten up with Tetom yelling to stop it. The fake Gaorangers come across the Hurricangers and Gouraigers, more vulgarity ensues as we find out it was the five spears! GaoWhite demands their stuff back, but they refuse and transform again complete with low energy intros. Shurikenger shows up for quick slashing, allowing him and the Gouraigers to fight the imposters while they rescue the real Gaorangers. The Hurricangers fight magerappas with GaoWhite followed by Chubouzu. During this the dark spears fight the three ninjas with their ninpo and gao powers in combination.

Tetom starts losing hope, but the men refuse to surrender to the duke orgs. At some pillars in a desert we see a cloaked figure. After that the Hurricangers are worn down, Chubouzu using a not-King Stone from Kamen Rider Black to drain GaoWhite's energy. Hurricane Red and Hurricane Yellow go slash happy which busts his belt buckle and dissolves the talismans. The others can stand, get angry, and fight off magerappas when Yab and Tsue panic before teleporting off. The others and Tetom make it outside, reuniting with GaoWhite while thanking the Hurricangers. However, the Gouraigers and Shurikenger are injured from their fighting. The dark spears laugh at the Gaorangers before getting assaulted in explosions. Yab and Tsue join in the mockery, the latter mentioning their bosses are laughing from the afterlife. Chubouzu shows up to lead a march against them. However, the cloaked figure shows up on the GaoRoader, revealing to be GaoSilver. Tetom gives him his G-Brace Phone, he does a speech, the Power Animals respond, the dark spears weaken, and the Hurricangers use this change for stage show slashing. The G-Phones return to the Gaorangers along with Tetom throwing them their jackets. The Gouraigers and Shurikenger get up to join as all twelve rangers transform and do intros. Look at that explosion behind them. The villains get pumped and charge in, both reds fight Chubouzu to start things off. The Gouraigers take on Manmaruba with GaoSilver helping them. Both Yellows go after Yab, GaoWhite fights both female dark spears, and Hurricane Blue goes against Tsue. Both female rangers then go after their respective counterparts. So much fighting, it's awesome. Both sixth rangers corner the villains and use their ultimate attacks both at once. After that the Victory Gadget and PBS are used from two different sides, destroying Yab, Tsue, and Chubouzu at once in a huge explosion. However, thanks to cosmic ninja art, Chubouzu is revived as a giant with three previous ninja beasts! The Gaoranger opening plays as GaoKing, GaoHunter, Senpujin, Gourajin, and Tenkujin arrive to fight. FIVE ON FOUR KAIJU FIGHTING, AWESOME. Senpujin fights off Chubouzu while the others make short work of the revived ninja beasts, GaoKing using GaoElephant in sword and shield mode while it fights to use the Evil Crusher in combination with GaoHunter's Beast Hurricane. Chubouzu uses his cosmic ninja art to conjur up a storm which also summons Chuzubo! Senpujin and Gouraijin unite to become Gourai Senpujin, punching their old foe and destroying him in one hit. Chubouzu has the two remaining ninja beasts fuse with him for an extremely powrful lightning beam that stuns all the mechs! Gourai Senpujin loses its right arm, GaoLion tells GaoRed a plan as the mech is assaulted. GaoRed enters Hurricane Red's cockpit saying they can use the Power Animals and they do so with GaoShark, GaoTiger, and GaoElephant. The master finds this amazing while Oboro breaks the fourth wall this is a special. The newfound power takes down the ninja beasts easily. Everyone enters everyone's cockpits, Tenku Gourai Senpukin is formed, the Wind Thunder Hurricane fires with aid of the Power Animals, and Chubouzu is destroyed for good. Everyone thanks each other save for the sixth rangers because GaoSilver likes disappearing. Shurikenger wonders where he is going only for GaoSilver to reply he will follow the wind. The end credits show Tetom accidentally frying Oboro's computer and other shenanigans. The movie ends with the rangers shaking hands with their counterparts with smiles, Hurricane Red promising they will defend Earth.

Chubouzu: Powers include DNA copying talismans, a double sided trident that can turn giant sized, summoning dead ninja beasts and lightning

Yeah, this is definitely canon, it likely takes place right after the Hurricanger movie because of Manmaruba being there. I have to admit for a mediocre series this was an astounding crossover! I dare say maybe the best of the versus movies? Dun dun duuuuuuun!

10 Years After:

I so missed you, TV-Nihon subs.

Bombings without casualties happen around the world, the Hurricangers look for the culprit as part of the Galactic Ninja Alliance. We see a figure named Hurricane Dark who is the culprit, discovered by Blue and Yellow. He uses a slash attack and goes to civilian form, revealing to be Red! He states the battle ten years ago was a mistake before calling them a mistake. A new intro opens with the Hurricangers and Gouraigers. Ten hours earlier we see Blue showering and Yellow trying to talk to her via yelling. Apparently Blue has become a popular actress over the years as we see mementos on her wall. Some agent is answering her phone leaving the longest message on Earth. After that Yellow gets a call from his two kids wondering about dinner, curry suggested. However, Blue spots a bat in her apartment and tries fighting it. Said bat turns out to be a monster wanting her shinobi medal! The monster, named Batze Rumba (or BR as I will type it), wants to be a dark spear of the Jakanja. The two find this impossible before he teleports off. After that is some boy ban familiar with kaijin plays a song. It really is that random. Turns out the lead singer was Kuwaga Raiger while Kabuto Raiger was listening to on a couch. Some talking ensues that goes nowhere until Dark attacks them. Blue and Yellow climb stairs to a utility man's office which is where Red works. Wow this guy has met children from across the world if the pohot are to be believed. Blue sees printed orders from the Galactic Ninja Alliance, Yellow wonders if he is the bombing terrorist. The next order being a building in townn. The door opens to reveal some teenage kid. Red reveals himself to the Gouraigers and gives medals to a random woman that turns out to be Furabijo! After the two brothers wonder what the hell, he teleports off. Meanwhile, the teenage boy tells the Hurricangers to die while begging Red to save him. After that we see Wendinu and Furabijo having chained the boy to a cross, BR walks just as the shinobi medals are placed on an alter. BR states they need six in total, the boy begs Red to save him. Back at the beginning of the movie, Red turns back to Dark and fights his former friends on a rooftop. He lets them win and Yellow says he will stand trial. At the Galatic Ninja Alliance HQ, aka a castle, the duo use ninpo to open a chamber door. The highness is the judge behind a curtain. Red says nothing when asked about the bombings while Oboro and her dad run in saying he is no terrorist. The highness whines about them not being allowed in. Yellow mentions BR and the shinobi medals. The highness concludes he is either exiled to space or executed. Blue mentions the small boy- He was only ten?

BR enters the room, everyone is baffled. The master concludes he used Red as a trojan horse. BR uses telekinetic explosions to steal the shinobi medals after attacking the highness- Wait how did she survive from the series!? They even played her death! Red takes Shurikenger's shinobi medal. Red gives it to him in exchange for the boy, named Tenkai, they were holding hostage. BR will not let him go and teleports off. The trio travel to Shinobi Valley, Blue and Yellow try talking to Red to no avail. Yellow begs him once at a river while Blue eats an apple before giving it to him. ZOH MY GOSHZORS THE BITTERNESS! Red takes a bite after that followed by the trio singing. Insert random flashbacks here. Some talking happens about being a Hurricanger and remembering feelings by Red. He reveals he found Tenkai washed up on a shore one day, brought him on his journey, and one day he got kidnapped by BR. When BR shows Red the final battle of the TV series, part of Tau Zant landed in the ocean to form a stronger monster which is inside Tenkai's body. Therefore the shinobi medals are necessary to revive the evil presence. Oboro and her dad talk about this in a quick shot. Blue and Yellow offer to help him, Red tells them not to since they have dreams and family now. The Gouraigers show up to literally punch sense into him followed by more speeches about how he saved them. Insert more flashbacks here. Also they have a tracking device in their shinobi medals. Red takes off his black jacket to reveal his old one, the five of them put their hands together, and they run off. They eventually track the Jakanja down, meet the villains, and the altar is complete with shinobi medals which shocks Tenkai. Red tries freeing him only to get shocked. The others get shocked so Red does not suffer alone. Tenkai gets flashbacks of him and Red after that.

BR is glad the time is coming as the evil presence exits the boy's body and everyone is flung to a field. BR collects the shinobi medals, summons magerappas, and Tenkai charges in using martial arts. Shurikenger's shinobi medal goes to him and transforms him into the new Shurikenger. Red says his shinobi medal responded to the boy's feelings. He takes back the shinobi medals and gives them back to the ninjas, allowing them to transform on top of a cliff with intros and colored smoke explosions. Dozens of magerappas are summoned, they jump down, charge in, and the two female villains narrate despite this never happening in the series. Also Blue does a guitar shtick that is just plain weird. Furabijo tried fighting, but she flunks hard. After that some guy in a samurai outfit ad flintlock pistol takes on the grunts. Wendinu decides to fight him- Wait is this the guy she had a crush on? They decide to duel via count to ten and she gets shot in the forehead, stunning her. Furabijo keeps narrating when some guy in Ruroni Kenshin cosplay shows up to go slash happy on the grunts- Wait is this their master? He is singing the opening theme as he fights. Then there is dancing with the Gouraigers- THIS IS REALLY DUMB! Classy dumb, but still. Both female villains acknowledge the complete defeat of the mooks while BR fights Red and New Shurikenger. He then divides into two ninjas. Then BR appears with his ninja halves to slay Red and Shurikenger only for them to play dead. The opening theme plays as they slash the ninja.... familiars? This weakens BR as the two use baseball bombs with a manifested baseball stadium. The six of them proclaim Earth is there planet before charging in to use stage show slashing while BR spams pectoral beams to no avail. The Final Gadget is fired using the 10 Year Buster, terminating the zero spear in a fiery explosion. The female villains are disappointed, saying they will be back in ten years. After that the master turns into his hamster form after hearing about the bills of the ninja branches Red destroyed. During the end credits the six look at the sunset while talking to each other. Sadly no kaiju fighting- Oh hey BR gets a file after all!

Batze Rumba: Powers include turning into a bat, teleportation, telekinetic flashes, creating holograms, flight, a pair of swords, dividing into two ninjas that can become flying heads that fire eye lasers, pectoral lasers

I wouldn't call this non-canon for the same reasons as others would. For starters, we never did see a body for Shurikenger when Tenkujin exploded and for all we know he might have given up his shinobi medal after his defiance in the series. They never mentioned him being dead specifically after all. On top of that there was nothing to contradict other sentai entries. However, where this does get non-canon-y is the sudden resurrections of said highness, Furabijo, and Wendinu, all of whom were FREAKING DEAD! It doesn't even make sense from a solely Hurricanger standpoint! Other than that is was fine, not as good as the Space Sheriff V-Cinema movies, but still decent. With that done we can FINALLY begin with Abaranger!......... Coming later because I need rest.

The time to talk about the first post 9/11 sentai series that is upon us or as commoners call it Hurricanger.

8f0a83acf6b152bdc3caeeb61ad887b8e035f011_54_2_2.jpg

"Are you really doing that Zyuranger/Dairanger approach without episode reactions?"

Correct! I am not wasting another month because of episode count! Seriously you guys have no idea how tired I am of writing all the time!

"So that means three parts with seventeen episodes each?"

Correct again!

"So no more ep reactions or anything?"

No, Gokaiger will get them if we make it that far, maybe sooner! But not here.

"Will you be counting the movie?"

Like with Dairanger, unless anyone explains differently, to the best of my knowledge the Hurricanger movie is another extended episode like other sentai movies, even the Gaoranger one. Hurricanger vs. Gaoranger will get a proper synopsis and whatnot at the end as well as the Ten Years Later movie.

"Okay Captain Shark, no more dicking around, tell us why you dread doing Hurricanger."

Well for starters this is the jump from video to digital sentai made so looks are a bit off putting. Starting from this series I stopped looking up basic spoilers because of all the mecha stacking and the sheer amount of villains that were not monsters of the week. In other words information overload; yeah Gaoranger had some, but this is where it went "TOO MUCH!". Gaoranger kicked off the whole collectable toyetic designs which kind of devolved every mech design starting here although since I have yet to see them in action that could change. With the exceptions of Magiranger, Boukenger, Gokaiger, and Go-Busters I'm not entirely enthused with anything after this point. Add on to the problems Kakuranger had and you can see the distance I have been wanting to keep.

"But Shinkenger!"

With the exceptions of Changeman and Timeranger none of the "high art/prestige" entries were as good as fans said they were so.... Yeah, don't care.

"But Goseiger!"

Hey, monsters named after movies and things look ornate, that does not look anywhere near as bad as people say it is, but we will see when we get there.

"Whine about TV-Nihon subs!"

I'll comment on that when we get to Dekaranger.

"What if I want to see entries from Abaranger forward to get the regular treatment?"

Just say something! Preferably politely. If someone wants to do episode guide reacting to a specific series just say so in this topic. Otherwise I am going to continue this trend from now to Goseiger.

You name the fortress itself Centipede? And what was up with that composite shot as it descended toward Earth? The ending sequence has good hang gliding footage. They had a team photograph before the second episode? Why do Hurricane Hawk and Hurricane Lion hide in major urban areas if stealth is important? I will give this series credit for having monster of the week info, as brief as it is, at the end of episodes to show that effort was put into making them. THAT IS NOT A SQUID THAT IS A CAMEROCERAS ARE YOU FRIGGIN' KIDDING ME? The cone shape should have been a give away! And what is up with the weird camera angles and pathetic use of filters in the cinematography? On top of all that Red and Blue are annoying with Yellow only kind of annoying; both male rangers get two focus eps while the female one only gets one. How do you go seventeen episodes with that few focus episodes in general? The Gouraigers got more focus! Orobo shooting her dad out of a ball that could have killed him was more horrific than it was funny, what the hell were the writers thinking? I can't comment on the mentor since he has barely done anything after the first ep. The intros are also lavish and unnecessary and yeah I get the whole stage show theme, but it interferes with practicality. Hell, half the fights are behind CGI screen doors! WHY!? The magerappas are barely even shown fighting which is a very poor use of sentai henchmen.

So yes, this is an extremely rocky start and I am not too enthused for what comes next. At least it has focus which is more than what I can say for Megaranger.

I am glad you continuing the reviews because I enjoyed them. Gaoranger Is my favorite series because of the mecha battles but agree it has become toyetic in later seasons and become too much.

^Why thank you, rangergod! Now it is time to go back to the past with classy zoids CGI in live action which is known as Abaranger.

0864623.png

"Two halves with twenty five eps each?"

Yup.

"And the movie?"

In part one since it takes place between 21 and 22.

"BUT YOU DO NOT LIST POWERS OF MOST OF THE VILLAINS!"

It happens.

"Stop with monsters of the week!"

Hee hee hee no!

"Will you do the same with Dekaranger?"

If nobody says anything, yes.

"I'm getting worried about you, are you okay?"

My country is going down the toilet and our president lost the popular vote, stress is very persistent in America right now.

"When are you ranking sentai movies?"

Probably after this? Not sure, but I have a list being constructed.

"Wait, did you praise TV-Nihon!?"

I watched Kamen Riders Ryuki through Drive just with them!

"And Abaranger vs. Hurricanger is at the end, right?"

That and a bonus.

"Wait, a bonus? But Abaranger didn't get a 10 Years After movie!"

You'll see. HAHAHAHA!

Wow that first episode was actiony! First sentai to not have an ending theme it seems- No wait, there it is they just waited until ep 2. Seeing a mech capable surfing was pretty cool. Since ep 35 of Hurricanger I noticed a little portion of the episode starts before the opening theme and now that extends to Abaranger from the get go. However, the difference here is that after the intro, a short segment of stock footage plays for some reason, very weird. As for ranger balance, currently Red and Black are down one with Blue and Yellow even, Killer will be determined later since he did not jump into the plot until ep 18. Notably this series is more juvenile than most sentai, I know Gaoranger and Hurricanger got childish, but this is Kamen Rider Den-O levels. Yup, the comedy is at that level. In terms of fan theory nonsense, I could see the dinosaurs repopulating Earth with humans after the pre-events to Zyuranger (105 million years is a long time); I'll comment more when the other 65 million year evens in Boukengers, Go-Onger, and Kyoryuger when we get to them. Everything is a step up from Hurricanger save for the opening, it's not as good, but at least the obnoxious tinting is fixed. Seriously, the opening really isn't much of anything compared to most sentai entries.

So ranger balance for the main trio are fine, but Black and Killer hogged up so much camera time it is amazing. I mean they did have more to contribute plot wise, but as a sentai it's very unbalanced. Hell, I dare say Red gets the worst focus of any red ranger save for the previous series because he only got two focus eps before he gained AbareMax powers. Now for everything else! The villains are a mixed bag, Voff and Mikela could have been one character as they were both monster makers, Jeanne's side switching was decent character development, but went on a tad too long. I have no complaints with Riji, she is basically Tran from Jetman minus the pathetic "stuck in a mental ward' ending. As for Black being both a mentor and a ranger, it was welcomed and a plus for the series even if he barely used any mechs himself. Toei editing is still down, only one time could I count that happening. The poor use of tinting crept into this series near the end so the cinematography is not the best unfortunately. Killer's arc was unique, an evil ranger that was kind of like Another Agito from Kamen Rider Agito that only joined the team near the very end as opposed to soon after his introduction. I did not mind a monster of the week being a recurring protagonist, if anything it fits into the theme of redemption played out since the first episode when the bakuryus were forced to do destructive deeds against their will.

Then there is Dezumozorlya. Oh my, we have the first confirmed successful rape in Super Sentai, intent being forced child bearing. So yeah, top that off with other manipulative things he's done to Dino Earth and you have one of the most successful final bosses in the franchise. Not only is this guy the reason dinosaurs are not on the main Earth what with creating another dimension upon arrival (I know things happen in Boukenger, Go-Onger, and Kyoryuger, but until we get there and find an explicit contradiction I see no reason to bring them up), but he infected every Earthikan life with maliform cells. Honestly, Dino Guts can be seen as yet another variation of positive energy except most of it was on Dino Earth rather than the regular one (or "Another" Earth as they call it in-series). It is also confirmed that many of humanity's problems with violence stems from this guy alone, meaning he is more or less responsible for other sentai groups like Egos, Deathdark, Jashinka Clan, Gear, Tube, Volt, Gorma Tribe, and likely individuals like the minions of CRIME that follow Shine or Dr. Hinelar or maybe even the Black Sun God that formed Black Magma.... And given the motifs with one eye maybe Javius and the Nezirejia were a variation of Dezumozorlya from another dimension? Who is to say this guy isn't responsible for other evil species like the boma, the yokai, or the orgs? He could even be a creature based on minus energy like the Psyma Family! This guy's influence goes a long way! So yeah, most earthly evil sources are probably related to either Dai Satan or Dezumozorlya!

And since Metal Heroes is canon to Super Sentai I'll include their Earth-based villains too! Now to rank stuff! I could have ranked this higher, but due to occasional slow pacing, comedic and serious moments clashing badly, and more than questionable ranger balancing that held it back. On top of that, while I did not mention it before, Gaoranger and Hurricanger did have a problem with long weapons being floppy with Abaranger including that on the spikes in their Abare Modes. Goaranger, Hurricanger, and Abaranger can be considered a "trilogy" of sorts involving collecting/toyetic/stacking for the mechs, floppy bits, early digital transitioning for video quality, and obviously aiming down for smaller kids more than previous entries (not that sentai never did, just that it is more obvious). Dekaranger does not seem to have any of that though, but we will see.

Abaranger vs. Hurricanger:

Buildings explode, people run, a giganoid is believed to be the cause so the four Abarangers take AbaRenOh and MaxOhJa out. The culprits are Senpujin and Gouraijon, Red noting they are weird giganoids. The opening plays as a two on two fight ensues. Ball weapons are used, overpowering the Abarangers. The Dino King Buster knocks out Gouraijin only for Senpujin to go sword happy followed by the Electric Drill Spin to bring it down. The others check on black while Furabijo and Wendinu exit the mechs- HOW THE HELL ARE YOU ALIVE!? Hurricane Red shows up via super speed, saying he will tak care of them. Red asks the same question I did, revealing the explosion that should have killed them sent them to Dino Earth's Invasionary Garden. Furabijo reveals they took a big jewel, Black states it conceals an evil demon king. Wendinu breaks it to spite Black, it explodes which causes a thunderstorm and the demon king to rise named Iga. The Abarangers and Hurricane Red quickly go down, not even the Super Dino Bomber helps them (although that is mostly Hurricane Red being in the way). After Iga does a wind blast the female villains get gushy followed by the Hurricane Yellow and Kabuto Raiger showing up. Iga walks away bored complete with the villains teleporting. At Dino Shop, talking ensues, Aba Blue insults the ninjas while Hurricane Red is POed they got in the way. Aba Red tries calming them down, something Hurricane Yellow does with his new haircut. Oboro walks in wanting damn curry followed by being informed what happened. Cut to the ninjas introducing themselves to the Evolians- And not canon due to Killer being on their side as Black was trapped in cursed armor during this time. Iga tells the two lady ninjas to get lost, Riji agrees. They complain so Iga proposes using them as henchmen which irks them. At Dino Shop more talking occurs. The sensei comes back in control of his hamster form. Aba Red has no idea who he is while the sensei explains Iga is an alien ninja that caused a ton of destruction until three sages (the Heavenly Triad from Kakuranger?) sealed him in the big jewel. He states they must work together just as evolian portals open up. Everyone heads out while we see Hurricane Blue and Kuwaga Raiger in Spain, mentioning bull fight tickets when they get word of what is happening back in Japan. Both reds bicker pointlessly, Hurricane Red throwing tantrums while Aba Red tries calming him down before Iga shows up. Both have their devices sealed to prevent them from transforming. The others are then attacked by Iga, Hurricane Blue saving Aba Yellow from a lightning attack. Deep in the woods Black talks with Kabuto Raiger when Iga gives them transformation seals too followed by lightning blasts. Kuwaga Raiger shows up from above to save them. We then find out the Igas attacking the rangers are shadows as the real Iga sucks up life energy from humans on top of a building. Both red rangers get angry and charge in- Oh great stge show fighting- Oh hey wire works! A few shurikens later destroys the shadow and the seals with it. The blues and yellows use ropes to restrain Iga before assaulting him in melee which destroys that shadow. Black and the Gouraigers do similar fighting, but with Black's jacket blinding the alien ninja until he is impaled on a tree branch followed by ninjato slashing.

At Dino Shop, the Dino Guts from humans is being drained at a rapid rate while the red rangers bond. Everyone is alerted what is going on and Iga meets all nine on an open field, revealing the Dino Guts has powered him up. The Abarangers get furious while the evolians and Jakanja show up with Killer transforming right there. Transforming from the heroes occurs as they jump on a cliff to do intros and colored explosions. They jump down and charge in to fight. Oh dear to I see fujoshi art spawning from Hurricane Yellow and Aba Blue doing their double attack. Killer is little match for the Gouraigers. Hurricane Blue and Aba Yellow fight the female villains lead by Jeanne. Both Reds charge at Iga, accidentally slashing themselves while getting an electric scarf. Hurricane Red then uses Aba Red as a surf board to slash him up followed by AbareMax being used on him with extreme prejudice. After that the Super Dino Bomber and Victory Gadget are combined to take down the weakened alien ninja. Boom! But wait, he lives and becomes enlarged! Brachiosaurs is called, releasing the ninja machines with the bakuryus so their respective mechs can form. Killer has KillerOh formed to fight them. Gourai Senpujin fights KillerOh while AbaRenOh fights Iga. Both sides land hits on the other even if KillerOh never went at blinding speeds and Gourai Senpujin falls apart, forcing the Hurricangers out. Black helps them up as KillerOh walks toward them- And the Ground Inferno is used to catch him off balance. Top Galer tells him he has reached his limit for today and he teleports off. AbaRenOh uses the Electric Drill Spin except Iga takes out a giant shuriken and does a spin attack to knock it down. Before the final blow, Mammoth Revolver shows up to save it, Shurikenger controlling it on a cliff much to everyone's surprise. The bakuryus tell the Abarangers to keep fighting so they do so. Hurricane Red says they should send their Dino Guts to the Abarangers and they proceed to do so. Iga tries bolting them, but that fails. A golden version of Senpujin's sword is manifested because why not, Oboro does minor forth wall breaking, Iga gets slashed while doing a spin attack, and the Split Drill Slasher finishes off the space ninja for good. The ninjas say their farewell while having faith the Abarangers will defeat the evolians. Hand shaking occurs before pouring them into one pile complete with sappy piano music. The ninjas jump away, the ending credits play everyone does silly walking, and the Abarangers do slow motion walking- Oh yeah and the Jakanja get chased by a sandworm from Dune. Not even kidding.

Iga: Powrs include a ninjato that can drain life, teleportation, hand wind blasts, transformation seals, hand lightning, an electric scarf, size changing, a spin attack used with a giant shuriken stored on the back, and eye energy bolts

Part of me is glad this is non-canon since it adds rather pointless rules in-universe that come out of nowhere, the "explosion caused us to go into another dimension" thing being the worst, and Killer barely able to hold his own with the Gouraigers was disappointing. This crossover is also a textbook example of stereotypical "we must add unnecessary drama and tension with the characters crossing over", it made Hurricane Red kind of a whiny brat the same way GoRed in Timeranger vs. GoGo-V was portrayed as stuck up. If Ohranger vs. Kakuranger was not part Escaflowne doujin, I'd call this the worst crossover thus far. Stay tuned as a bonus treat is coming up.

The bonus is revealed, we're looking at a famous Power Rangers: Dino Thunder episode!

Lost and Found in Translation:

Don't care for this theme- oh hey ATVs! At some place called Cyberspace the red and yellow rangers hear a TV the blue ranger is flipping through. Instead of being at a library he got a satellite dish complete with popcorn. Minor bickering ensues when the blue ranger clicks on Abaranger! The opening plays, the TV guide says it is Power Rangers dubbed in English. The red ranger is skeptical, but blue and red are interested. AbaYellow cooks curry, Blue reads a paper to see a baseball player is coming to Japan, and Red finds the curry spicy- That dub is off-sync. Emmy notes she helped make it. PR Red turns off the TV irked, mainly because he's nothing Aba Red. PR Blue turns it back on, Jeanne gets angry especially at Aba Black when Riji tells her to do something about it. Mikela and Voff are yesmen- Yeah that's accurate. Also Riji is ticked off at Jeanne for taking her hairspray, leading to a new trionoid. PR Red and Yellow bicker. Aba Blue makes fruit curry and the others are disinterested when someone walks in- Seriously who is this? He eats the fruit curry when Aba Black walks in to eat the fruit curry. Aba Blue notes he likes it until Aba Black needs a bathroom. An emergancy occurs, the "alien lifeform" detected downtown while Emmy must clean up the mess. The baseball star shows up just as the evolian shows up, PR Red and Blue bicker briefly. "Magic wigs" are thrown before the American tourist is found. The Abarangers transform as "Dino Thunder", the PRs wonder how this is possible as they pose. The barmias are unleashed while the trionoid does banter and imagines them in wigs. PR Red tries leaving, PR Blue and Yellow try stopping him only to fail, unaware he left his pack. The baseball star strikes a home run to give the monster his own wig so the villains teleport off. Aba Blue and the baseball player stare off, the latter revealing he is looking for a chiropracter. Aba Red and Yellow reveal he is looking for Blue just as PR Red comes back for his pack. Aba Red and Yellow talk about the player's net worth as Aba Blue fixes his spine. The baseballer gets angry until he discovers how good his back is, PR Blue and Yellow laugh. Aba Blue states his job as a Power Ranger is more important than the money he is proposing while telling him to enjoy his stay in Japan. PR Red takes some of Blue's popcorn. The trionoid wants the player's autography, distracting him long enough to give him a wig. PR Red gets POed at this because Japan makes fun of their sports heroes, PR Yellow tells him to calm down since it is one TV show in part of an episode. He eventually moves.

PR Red gets on the couch, the baseball star gives Aba Blue bags of money when he notices the magic wig. The player reveals he can bribe his way to fame, Aba Blue finds this awful and throws the money. Other magic wig carriers act weird including a cartoon bird (a seagull?). The monster comes back to fire coins, trapping him up. A the trinoid laughs, Aba Red and Yellow show up to act stupid before Blue transforms. More coins fire, this time as regular projectiles that send them flying. He says he will make them rich, they refuse with Red joking. Aba Black shows up with banks. This collects all the coins shot out until they get full. The baseball player shows up, Aba Blue thinks they can save him with his love of baseball. He throws his bnk, the player bats the bank at the monster, and he falls asleep in an igloo.... Until he wakes up and pimp slaps everyone. Greed is talked about and the Dino Bomber is fired on him, PR Red getting super excited. PR Yellow says it is just a different interpretation. That morning the bar is full as the episode is finished on PR Red's laptop, PR Yellow notes his social studies project is about differences between Japan and America. The episode ends with bantering as another trio of teens watch Abaranger. Cue credits.

Time to enter the first sentai in widescreen which everyone calls Dekaranger.

dekaranger_ten_years_after_281_29.png

"Another two parter?"

Correct!

"Stop giving fame to monsters of the week!"

Never BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

"And the movies?"

Full Blast Action will be in part 1 since it takes place after episode 23 while the crossover with Abaranger and 10 Years After will have their own separate parts.

"What about the Gavan crossovers coming up?"

Will not be covering here, more on this when we get to Shinkenger and Gokaiger, but direct crossovers with other Toei heroes will not be counted in this thread including the Kamen Rider crossover eps the post-Kyoryuger rangers had. Yes I am aware Dekaranger is a big hammy Space Sheriff homage.

"But I wanted you to review x!"

Then I might make another separate topic.

"Versus movies are not in canon cuz Toei said so!"

I will believe this when A) A credible source is posted and B) only when they contradict continuity are they really non-canon.

"Anything else you wanna mention?"

Dekaranger is the only sentai to win the Seiun Award and the third tokusatsu to ever win it after Ultraman Tiga and Kamen Rider Kuuga. Also it has the most rangers belonging to a single series/story until Kyoryuger although with Kyuranger that might change.

"I miss your old format!"

SAY SOMETHING THEN!

"You like TV-Nihon?"

Every Kamen Rider from Ryuki to Drive was watched entirely with TV-Nihon and I learned a lot about Japanese culture thanks to them. So yes, these guys are my preferred subs and no OtakuKing documentary for YouTube is going to make me think otherwise.

Why is TV-Nihon celebrating their 5th anniversary with these title cards? Especially if only the first episode is not using TV raws. Now for Dekaranger itself! The ending theme is very showa-y. Gordom from ep 24 reminds me of Pegassa Seijin from Ultraseven. As for the rangers /m/ wasn't joking when they said Red screams a lot holy frick. In terms of episode balance Red is ahead by one, Blue and Pink are even, and Yellow and Green are behind by one. Break I will leave alone until later as well as Ambrella. I like how Kruger's species is "Anubis Seijin" when Anubis was a jackal and he is clearly a domesticated dog (maybe a long-eared wolf?). That doesn't bug me as much as his motionless mouth, where are the puppeteers? Since Metal Heroes is in continuity and SPD is likely a division of the Galactic Police, I could see Doggie as a Space Sheriff candidate that either did not make the cut or chose to train future generations since his personality and fighting style do reflect that attitude. In terms of in-universe stuff it would seem really weird that the Special Police are only on Earth for a year or so, but on the other hand the planet has faced off against many serious threats to the universe and won. As to why Alienizers pick Earth of all places? Maybe Ambrella likes using this planet because so many bigger events happen that it is easier for smaller crime to occur since most civilians and authorities are distracted by a giant monster. In fact we do see this in a few episodes, the SPD is likely there to deal with smaller (in comparison) crimes since they are a police force. Normally you'd question why space feds would patrol your planet, but after 25+ years of murderous empires and syndicates doing so much damage I'd imagine the people of Earth would be begging for some help at this point. For all we know they've been on Earth for a while and we're just seeing the year things finally calmed the hell down. As for the whole "courts determine you being deleted" thing I noticed most of these were for serial murderers (which makes sense) except for Byoui, kind of weird a non-murderer got the death penality, but strangely enough nobody brings up "assaulting a police officer" among the chargers. In fact that same kind of draconic attitude is reflected in Timeranger, just with really long sentences. Then again this franchise has indicated that compared to most planets Earth's lifeforms usually have the shortest lifespans so maybe this is a case of "not every size fitting"?

Anyway, the series is proving itself to be a step up from Abaranger at the moment. In fact I dare say the movie is the best stand alone sentai movie with all the action scenes and length that it has.

So Red and Blue are camera hogs, Pink was down by one, and everyone else was even. I felt like making Swan a ranger was a bit pointless as was Bright. Were they trying to catter to a female demographic? Anyway, this had plenty of JAKQ level serious episodes in it which you do not see in sentai these days (even if a lot of them are cop movie spoofs). The sole recurring villain aka Ambrella could have been built up more, for a guy that supposedly destroyed galaxies by Darth Sidious-ing everyone you would think that would been mention prior to the final episode. The world building could have been better in other words which does hinder this series. The action scenes were well done although you can tell Toei editing was slowly creeping in at places, especially during chase scenes. Something I will give this series credit for is that it is the second series after Gorenger to have an ending theme better than the opening theme. To some degree I want to replace Denziman with this as to how a sentai series should operate, but that bad ranger balance really killed that from happening unfortunately. It really is the little things that build over time that can drag something down and Dekaranger was no exception unfortunately. Time for ratings!
