Article 8: Art Of War – Part 1

Adrian summoned Raptor via remote and shot both Croly and Edom. Croly cursed and clutched his body. The Greenshirts, now joined by the Reptoids, began to attack Adrian.
“Damn you, Edom†Croly growled. “You still don’t know your place, do you?â€
“The Biotheres are in my care. You need not kill every one who escapes you.â€
“They may have human parentage, but they are mindless animals. They’re merely proof of our scientific genius, as are you. If they’re out of control, they must be put down like you would any rabid creature.â€
Edom watched Adrian fight madly against the grunts even as he exhausted himself. Almost like he was for his kindred. For a second he felt an inkling of empathy…. but then remembered he was of the inferior stock of humans, those who could not rise to the godliness of Terra Nova’s Greenshirt elite.
“If you were truly devoted to Terra Nova you would not rebel so.â€
Edom bowed low. “A thousand pardons.â€
He took Mesothelae with him and stumbled away. Croly shook his head. Edom was old. Compared to the recent Biotheres, he was also obsolete. Were it not for the fact that Gottfried had given him life, he would have been disposed of long ago.

Adrian was at his limit. His arms and back were discolored; had the spider had poisoned him? He felt himself… or perhaps his BioSuit… grow weaker. Raptor at last arrived, barreling through the grunts and stopping in front of its rider. Adrian leapt on and got away as fast as he could. The Greenshirts fired shots after him but he managed to escape without further harm...

“It’s hatching now?†Greg repeated in surprise when he heard Alexa report the news. She had brought the egg in a small box and placed it on the table in the galley. The four of them watched the eggshell shake and crack as the creature within slowly entered the world…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wordlessly the four picked up objects to defend themselves and catch whatever hatched out. When the egg finally broke apart completely, they stared in surprise at the baby that had emerged.
“Oh boy†said Greg.

A baby Reptoid had hatched in front of them. With its human-like body shape and large eyes coupled with reptilian skin and still-soft ventral carapace, it looked almost unreal.
“What do we do?†asked Danny.
The Reptoid snapped at them and rolled off the table to the floor. They began trying to corner the creature as it scampered unsteadily for a way out, biting and clawing them whenever they were close. Kay found something heavy to throw when Alexa stopped her.
“No, don’tâ€
“Huh?â€
“It’s just scared†she explained. Looking into its eyes, she suddenly felt she could understand it somehow. She found a towel and snuck up on the Reptoid from behind while Greg and Danny distracted it. At the right moment she dove forward, wrapped the baby with the towel and hugged it against her.
“What are you doing??†asked Greg bewilderedly. But Alexa held on until the Reptoid stopped thrashing. She gradually eased her grip on it as it relaxed.

“Get some food. It might be hungry.â€
“Do we even have food left?†muttered Kay. She saw only a meager amount remaining. They really needed to go find some more soon. Kay took an uncooked hot dog and nervously stuffed it into the Reptoid’s mouth. Alexa gently released it into a corner as it munched the meal.
“That’s better, isn’t it?†she cooed softly. The boys exchanged skeptical glances.
“It looks so human†said Kay. Alexa looked at the baby again with pity. Human-like indeed. What perverse mind created something like this, a hideous blend of human and animal?

The door slid open and Adrian walked in. He momentarily forgot his exhaustion and looked at the disorderly room, keying in on the eggshell and Reptoid near his feet.
“Looks like I missed the party.â€
“Not all of it†said Greg.
“What do you mean?†asked Alexa.
“One of Terran’s friends contacted me. He wants us to meet him.
Adrian grimaced. The others seemed just as uncertain…

“Teddy Lee†said Adrian once Greg finished explaining about Teddy Lee. “I had him once. Not a bad guy.â€
“I’m glad you think so, because I think we should go find him.â€
“Are you kidding?†Adrian snapped. “You’re gonna take him at his word just because he was Terran’s friend? Did you forget Creel was his friend too?â€
“Then what do you suggest? We’re running out of fuel and food. We’ll be a sitting duck soon unless we get some help, and Lee is the only shot we have. Plus he can tell us more about Terra Nova, something we can use against them.â€
“How do you know it’s not a trap? Nova could have gotten to him already. He could be luring us in for them to finish us.â€
“Adrian has a point†said Alexa. The baby Reptoid was now sitting close to her leg and tasting her pants leg. “His instructions even sound iffy.â€
“He can’t afford Nova finding him out†said Greg. “And again I ask, what choice do we have? Look at the meters. We’ll be grounded in only a few hours. We have to make a decision now.â€
Danny sighed. “I’m with Greg. Even if it’s a trick, once we go down they’ll take us out in a snap.â€
“So that’s two for and two against†said Adrian. Everyone turned to Kay.
“I’m the tiebreaker?†she griped. After a moment she gave her answer.
“I say let’s find Lee. We need anything we can get.â€

“There†said Greg. “It’s decided.â€
“I still think it’s a mistake†said Adrian. “You shouldn’t trust Lee so easily.â€
“I can’t go second-guessing everyone just because of what Creel did†said Greg, letting his feelings out. “At some point we have to trust someone if we’re to win.â€
“I trust us†said Adrian. “Let us land. When Nova comes we’ll hold our ground.†He gripped his chair tightly. “I’m not running anymore.â€

Alexa looked at him. “Did something happen this morning? You seem... vindictive.â€
“Maybe more than our boy in blue, I feel†Adrian muttered.
“What does that mean?†asked Greg.
“… Nothing. Forget it†Adrian shook his head.
“What’s wrong?†asked Danny. His expert eye viewed his comrade’s body. “You look like you were in a fight.â€
“I had a run-in with the Biotheres’ leader†Adrian confessed.
“What? Are you alright?â€
“I’m fine†Adrian couldn’t bring himself to talk about Janine. He rose and turned to Greg again.
“You’re still not fighting like you should. You still want to stay clean.â€
“What’s your point, Adrian?†Greg asked, bracing for another argument.
Janine passed through his mind like a specter determined to haunt him. His voice grew more bitter. “Kill ‘em. Kill ‘em all.â€

Adrian disappeared into his room.
“Stonewall Jackson†said Danny, recognizing the quote. Greg let out a sigh. Sadly enough, he was beginning to feel rather like a Civil War general; Terra Nova was their Richmond. And yet they were just incapable of seizing it...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since taking his leave of Gregory and his band of heroes, Bobby Lorenz had been running from and fighting Terra Nova solo. His means were wide-ranging and, in Greg’s view, often questionable, which was one reason he had opted not to join him. Greg had a good heart, but often not a good stomach.

In one of their recent purges the organization had managed to corner and capture Bobby. He was taken to a facility where other dissidents of this New World Order were being held. He dealt a kick to the Greenshirt holding him (who looked like a cowardly pushover underneath that large costume) and tried to flee but was thrown hard into a wall by an Enforcer, a series of Ecodroids specializing in prisoner detail.

drawsimplerobot002.jpg

Enforcer cast a disgusted look at the Greenshirt and aimed his cannon at Bobby’s head.
“Leave him!†said a voice. From the floor Bobby saw another Ecodroid named Marauder call Enforcer back.

andrewley.jpg

Mechadrones followed behind him and began roughly corralling the captives.
“Do you see this man?†Marauder asked them, pointing to Bobby. “He is one of those who have continually resisted Terra Nova as it does its noble work in reshaping the world, the world that you have long wrecked.â€
He opened a cannon on his hand and spun it around in pleasure. “Now watch him die, and let it be a lesson to anyone else who defies progress.â€
Bobby was shoved to the wall by some Mechadrones. Marauder aimed at his head. Bobby closed his eyes and waited for the death blow… but just then one of the captives threw something at Marauder right as he fired. Bobby flinched. The shot grazed his head and hit the wall behind him. The would-be hero was quickly restrained by the Mechadrones, but some of the braver captives made an effort to throw them off.

Bobby forced himself up, blood trickling from his head, his vision blurred. The one who saved him waved him off.
“RUN!â€
Not about to argue, Bobby made a break for it. Marauder yelled and fired again. Bobby dodged the first shot, but the next struck him in the back. His eyes widened as he gasped from the impact, and he stumbled to the floor again. On his knees, Bobby turned to see the robot stare down at him.
“That’s a good place for you, human.â€
Bobby responded by spitting at his feet. Marauder paused for a moment as someone relayed an instruction to him. He then struck Bobby across the head. He fell to the ground and blacked out.

* * *

Bobby could hear talking... though the voices were unknown to him.
“What is this?â€
Making out the words “process†and “completeâ€, he slowly opened his eyes to see a bright white lamp over his face.
“He’s awake†a robotic voice announced.
Bobby bolted up to a sitting position. He was on some sort of operating table in a close-quarter room with stone gray walls and no windows.

A man in a white lab coat approached him. He was the Greenshirt Wells IV, a molecular biologist already infamous for his controversial attempts to repeat Vladimir Demikhov and Robert White’s transplantology experiments. Within Terra Nova’s circle though, he had been one of the developers of the updated, longer-lived Biotheres.
“Well, it seems you are awake...how do you feel?â€
He looked at the man for a few seconds. He recognized him from the media.
“You’re Dr. Barinov†he muttered.
“Not quite. I have discarded that name†said the scientist as he tidied up the space and examined Bobby’s vitals. “You may call me Wells IV.â€
“Wells? As in H.G. Wells?†Bobby repeated softly. “Francis Galton? Thomas Huxley? Do you people worship these guys or something?â€
“They are among the great minds of this world. To rechristen ourselves after them only displays the reverence they deserve.â€

*BGM plays*
(‘Aku No Shin'en’ from Jiku Senshi Spielban)

Bobby snorted. He could see Marauder in the corner extending and retracting his arm cannon in boredom. The robot had brought Bobby here on Wells’s orders, but felt robbed of his chance to kill this gadfly himself.
“What have you done with those people?†Bobby demanded.
Marauder looked at him and pointed at his body. “I think you have bigger things to worry about.â€

Bobby held his head as a surge of pain coursed through, and felt a yellow substance flake off his skin. He looked down at his body and saw it was smeared with the yellow substance, resembling dried scabs. He leapt off the table in horror.
“What the hell is this??â€
Bringing his hand back in front, he stared at the grotesque sight before grabbing Wells IV by the collar.
“What did you do to me?! Tell me!â€
Marauder tore him from the Greenshirt. Wells took the blue eagle-shaped buckle worn by all Terra Nova members and placed it on his waist. His custom armor suit appeared over him.
“Have you heard of the Cordyceps fungus, Mr. Lorenz? It infects a hapless arthropod species, drives it mad before it finally dies, and grows out from its corpse to spread its offspring. A malicious creation, yet intriguing.â€
Bobby gulped. He had a feeling where this was headed.
“You made your own version, didn’t you? One that could work on mammals.â€
“Very good. It’s almost a shame to use you this way, you have keen mind. But alas, you do not see the light. Thus I have made you useful to us as a weapon.â€
“NO!†For the first time since escaping Terra Nova, Bobby began to feel real fear.
“Eventually you will succumb to the fungus. Then it shall emerge and infect everyone around you. Everyone you are trying to save.â€
“Like hell it will!†Bobby grabbed a knife and tried to stab Wells IV, but Marauder threw him to the other side of the room. Bobby scrambled back up and, seeing the door nearby, made a break for it.

“Let him go†Wells IV said to Marauder. “He has nowhere to run.â€
“You’d better have something else for me to shoot†Marauder growled.
“I don’t care for your tone†Wells IV rebuked. “Remember that I saved you from the scrapheap when Monger had no use for you.â€
“Monger could not control me†Marauder snorted. He suddenly aimed his cannon at Wells IV’s head. “And neither can you.â€
“Oh no?†Wells IV showed him a small detonator. “Did you forget I still have this?â€
Marauder reluctantly lowered the cannon. “Of course not.â€
“Good. Don’t make me use it, you are too valuable to me.â€

Just then a message came in to all Terra Nova bases. The Fuhrer Nova himself was making an announcement.
“I have been informed that the DinoJet is running out of its fuel and must land. The Dinomen are vulnerable; now we must strike them before they can recover! All closest personnel take as many forces as you can spare. Track them down and destroy them!â€
“There†said Wells IV. “Here is new prey for you.â€

Elsewhere, Galton XII led a Greenshirt cavalcade of jeeps and trucks. With him were Sanger IV, Davenport V and Huxley IX. Croly III and his grunts were also en route. In the forest, Edom had finished healing the Biotherium Mesothelae and called forth his Biotheres. Monger and his Ecodroids were not far behind.

A showdown was coming…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Danny was on monitor duty the next morning.
“I found a place we can land†he reported to the others. A large rocky canyon was a short distance from their current position.
“Good. Let’s make for that and start packing†said Greg. “We can track Lee from the road.â€
Kay then noticed some icons coming their way on a screen.
“What is it?†asked Adrian.
“It’s Nova†said Kay. “They’ve found us!â€

Sure enough a squad of Thunderbirds was closing in on them. At any moment they would be within firing range.
“Start the descent! Get us outta here!†ordered Adrian. The five of them took their seats in the cockpit. DinoJet flew lower and the Thunderbirds pursued, like orcas haranguing a massive baleen whale. The jet’s cannons were released and began firing back on the enemy. Nevertheless, some of the fighters got in some damage.
“I wish this thing was more maneuverable†said Greg.
“Well it wasn’t built for combat, remember?†replied Danny. “We’re almost there, let’s just try not to get blown up.â€
A shot grazed their engines. The team braced themselves as the craft buckled. The shields were diminishing. Sparks danced on the outside and within.
“Made it!†Danny exclaimed as they came directly over the plain.
“Gently now†advised Alexa. She found a panel to release DinoJet’s wheels. They bounced once and rolled swiftly, then slower and slower until they made a complete stop. Greg shut down all power to save the last amount of fuel left.
“Now what?†asked Kay. They could see the Thunderbirds flying around like vultures.
“Now I think we take a page from Sun Tzu†said Adrian.
“Huh?â€
“The Art of War? You never read it?â€
“I have†said Alexa after the others shook their heads. Ironic, thought Adrian. The one member without a college education seemingly had the more expansive literary knowledge.
“Oh that’s reassuring.â€
“Just tell us your plan†said Greg.
Adrian could recite passages of the ancient book by heart. Those that felt most appropriate for their current plight came to mind.

“One who knows when he can and cannot fight will be victorious.
One who recognizes how to employ large and small numbers will be victorious.
One whose upper and lower ranks have the same desires will be victorious
One who, fully prepared, awaits the unprepared will be victorious.
One whose general is capable and not interfered with by the ruler will be victorious.
â€

The third and fifth factors gave him pause, as he reminded himself of yesterday’s words. Without realizing it his fight with Terra Nova had become personal. But they could not afford to lose here and now. They all had to act for the good of the team. For survival.
“Ok. Here’s what we do…â€

For a while nothing happened. The heroes gathered their gear and tentatively stepped out of the DinoJet to survey the landscape.

The heroes were thrown all over the field by the continued bombardment. Raptor and Moschops arrived via remote to retrieve them, but now the DinoJet was left in a vulnerable position. The heavy artillery was trained on the vessel.
“No!†said Galton XII. “The ship is more valuable to us intact.â€
“Destroying it will cripple them utterly†Sanger IV objected.
“They’ll most certainly have stored Terran’s data onboard. Besides, it won’t do to waste such a machine.â€

“We split up now†said Adrian to the others. “Danny, Kay and Greg go down to the valley. Alexa and I will draw them down the plain.â€
“Wait!†yelled Alexa suddenly. The baby Reptoid had crept out of DinoJet as another bombardment began. It shrieked in terror from the explosions and cowered in the doorway, looking helplessly at the girl.
“He’ll be killed!â€
“What are you - †Adrian spluttered as Alexa went in a half run, half glide back to the ship and quickly gathered up the child. She threw some feather darts at the advancing Greenshirts before they could seize her and hurried back to the others.
“Terran’s data is still onboard†said Greg.
“You took as much as you could†said Danny. “Now let’s go.â€
“No!†said Greg. “We have to distract them. You and Kay go without me, I’ll try to lead them off a third way.â€
“Don’t be an idiot!†snapped Adrian. “Keep to the plan!â€
But Greg was already addressing the Greenshirts.
“Creel! If you want Terran’s data, don’t waste your time with the ship! You’ll have to take it off us!â€
Galton XII sighed. “I want more than that, boy. After them!â€
“Come after me yourself!†Greg challenged. “Let’s settle our score like men!â€
“Man??†the professor snorted with contempt.

The team fired a round of shots into the crowd, and then lost each other in the continued explosions. Kay and Danny fled in Moschops down the pebbly slope. Kay fired behind them with the mounted Cosmic Vanisher, but shot from a Thunderbird plus attacks from the Ecodroids knocked the jeep off its wheels, sending the two tumbling down the slope. Adrian and Alexa rode and flew along the canyon edge, pursued by the Biotheres below and the baby Reptoid continuing to shriek. Greg, alone, ran away from the canyon, evading the shooting from the Greenshirts close behind. Galton XII led the charge, his sight fixed on the young rebel.

Monger noted the enemy’s strategy.
“They want us to divide our forces†he observed to Revenger. His right-hand man made a guttural noise in reply.
“We’ll draw them back together. Send in Silo.â€
Revenger voiced his consent and relayed the order. Monger led his robots after Green and Pink Dino…

A team of Greenshirts was working in the forested area near where Wells IV had set up his laboratory. Upon nearing the cavern entrance, the sounds of yells and clattering objects could be heard. The head Greenshirts who were armed with machine guns moved forward and fired down the cavern's tunnel entrance as a warning. Of the Greenshirts in the back, one of them was Jennifer Zaura, and she looked at the entrance with cautious interest.
“If you can still walk, come out with your hands up!â€
Bobby Lorenz huddled in a corner near the entrance. He had no weapons or defenses. All he did have was the horrible Cordyceps parasitizing his body… but it was still young, not yet ready to infect others. He thought grimly to himself that that at least could be his one comfort: take as many of these bastards down with him.
“I said come out with your hands up!†the Greenshirt commanded again.
“Don’t shoot! I’m coming out!†he bellowed back, resigned to his fate. Better a quick death than a slow one, at least.

But when Bobby emerged they lowered their guard a bit. Apparently they thought he was one of them.
“What’s going on down there?†one of them asked. Bobby, realizing their ignorance, immediately assumed the façade of a hapless lab worker.
“Someone attacked us down there. I only just escaped, but I don’t know about the others.â€
“Where is he now?â€
“I don’t know. I didn’t look back, I just ran for it.â€
“Fine. Stay here, we’ll go take a look. All of you, let’s go. You can have some field practice here.â€
“God, these people are stupid†Bobby thought. No wariness at all. So much for the best and brightest. But that still left him with the question of what to do now.

As the Greenshirts went down the tunnel Bobby caught Jennifer’s gaze. At least she wasn’t so gullible, he thought to some relief and apprehension, as she eyed him. Actually she bore a resemblance to someone.
“You have a sister named Kay, don’t you?†he asked.
Jennifer shrugged. “Yeah. So?â€
Bobby said nothing more. Jennifer gave him one more look before joining the others, wondering for a moment how he knew that. Bobby took this chance to get away. Did Kay know her sister was in lockstep with these madmen? He hated to imagine what would happen should they ever cross paths.

Perhaps a slow death sentence was preferable…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Danny came to somewhere in the forested valley. His suit had deactivated in the fall. He checked himself over and, despite some bruises, found nothing broken. Moschops had by some miracle landed on its wheels, damaged but hopefully still able to run. But where was Kay? Danny kept from calling out lest the enemy hear him, but began searching earnestly for her. He then heard a faint groan in the foliage, and following the sound came across a suitless Kay lying on her back.
“Kay†Danny knelt down and looked her over. “You alright?â€
Kay tried to sit up but fell back down again. Danny then saw bruising over her ribcage and a puncture wound on her side. She had fallen over a particularly rocky wall near the foot of the canyon. She tried to speak but felt her breath choked out of her.
“Don’t talk†Danny tried to gently feel Kay’s torso. “At least one rib feels broken… and you’re bleeding out†he noted her wet, red-dyed side.
“Are…. Are you…†Kay whispered.
“I’m fine. Now be quiet, before we’re spotted.â€

The first thing to do was stop the bleeding and set the broken bone. The first was simple enough, but Danny was unsure of the second, himself not medically trained. He looked around for someplace less exposed and found a batch of trees rooted in a raised portion of earth that had part of it carved out.
“Stay still†he instructed. “I’m going to carry you over there.â€
A bit fearfully, he picked up Kay and brought her to the small mound. Kay bit her lip to keep from further groans. She watched Danny fish through the pack that all five of them had taken with them for bandages.
“Have you done this before?â€
“Ah…. no†Danny mumbled. “But I’m all you have right now.â€
“Mmmâ€

*BGM plays*
(‘Yume wa yaburetemo...’ from Chouju Sentai Liveman)

Kay fell quiet again. Danny set to work, hiding his slight embarrassment. At one time his parents had suggested a medical career for him, but he had lacked the grades to go very far in that field. Though even in engineering, his chosen field, his academic record was only average. To any professor or potential hirer, he would have been passed over without second thought for someone with more to show. But now he worked with painstaking care as he used his amateur knowledge to heal his teammate.

Amateur knowledge… amateur skill. That was all he ever had.

His parents never harangued him over academics like many immigrants did. They seemed happy that he tried his best, that in all other aspects he was a dutiful son. But Danny was no fool; he could see their hidden regret that he was never a star like many of his peers, the subject of boastful relations who thus fed into their children’s’ egos. Booksmart fools who were ignorant of what really mattered in this world, yet arrogant in wisdomless knowledge. What would all of them say now to him, who was now gambling his life for the world’s sake? What would those professors say to the retooled Cosmic Vanisher? Of DinoRobo’s weapons? All of it had been his work, and has saved the team from early defeat.

All this ran through Danny’s mind and it turned him sad and bitter. But when he looked again at Kay upon finishing his work he saw only respect, even admiration. A pang of feeling yet unspoken pulsed through him. He thrust it aside.
“That’s better. I’d tell you to lie down now, but it’s better if we keep moving.â€
“Good ideaâ€
Danny slowly lifted her up. Kay found her fallen Sniper and held it with one hand as she carefully trod to Moschops and lay in the back seat. Danny got behind the wheel and slowly drove through the foliage. In the distance he thought he could hear the whirrs and clicks of the Ecodroids as they drew closer…

Biotherium Mesothelae ran ahead of Adrian and Alexa and blocked their path with cords of webbing. They used their C-14 Sniper blades to cut their way through but by then Edom and the other Biotheres had cornered them. The amphibious Biotherium Hynerpeton came up alongside the Mesothelae.
“Come, my children†said Edom, rallying his fellow abominations and pointing at Adrian. “I shall avenge your injuries on this man.â€
“If anyone is avenging it’s us†Adrian growled in response. He raised his sword and attacked the old mutant. Mesothelae joined in, the stings of their past meeting still fresh. Alexa handled the Reptoids and Hynerpeton. The former seemed not to recognize the baby latched onto her back and took mindless swipes at it as well. The baby cowered in fright. Alexa continually dodged and rolled to keep the creature safe.

Edom’s strength was impressive for his age, even Adrian admitted such. His sword skill had improved, yet this foe’s scaly skin seemed like armor itself. Getting increasingly angered, Adrian charged the blade and tried to bring down Edom with a well-placed slash. Edom caught the blade on his torso and broke Adrian’s grip, throwing the weapon aside. He winced however at the wound left behind.
“There are no weapons in the wild. You have the power of an animal. Fight like one.â€
Adrian curled his fist. He switched styles to his familiar capoeira, but with a blend of Danny’s kickboxing technique, giving him the appearance of a pouncing raptor. Mesothelae shot silk strands around his limbs to restrain him. Edom began pummeling Adrian, bringing him to his knees. He collapsed from each blow, marveling how no bones were yet broken. Edom finished by smashing his fist through Adrian’s helmet. His exposed eye glared up at his opponent. Mesothelae released her cords and Edom raised Adrian high above his head and dashed him back to the ground.

“Now do you see?†Edom asked Adrian. “How does it feel to bear the pain you wrought on my kin? You are lower than the dirt you lie on. Submit to your new gods, before it’s too late for you.â€
Adrian defiantly raised himself. He saw that Alexa had just done a flying maneuver and brought her heel down on the Hynerpeton’s head.
“Gods?†he repeated through clenched teeth. “Is that what you call them? Just how stupid are you? The Greenshirts are just as human as we are…. no, less than human. They’re murderous psychotics! They’re gods only in their own demented minds! And you’ve been brainwashed into their cult from birth! You’re pathetic… I pity you, whatever you are.â€
“Pity?!†Edom fumed. How dare this untermensch libel the noble Terra Nova pantheon. He then saw the baby Reptoid tied onto Alexa’s back and kindled his rage even more.
“Return that child to us! Now you try to abduct the smallest of us. You accuse us of evil; I wonder how you would corrupt him!â€
Alexa came to Adrian’s side against Hynerpeton, Mesothelae and Edom. The Reptoids still standing stared at it almost with hunger. Alexa wondered with a sickening thought whether or not they ate their own. A sudden pang of sympathy for the child came over her, and she held it even closer.

“You know, somehow I don’t think you would be good parents†said Adrian, noticing the display.
Edom sent the Reptoids after them. Adrian barreled through them with swipes from his clawed hands and feet. Alexa jumped onto and from his shoulders and shot the Mesothelae and Hynerpeton, who had quickly shielded Edom. Adrian retrieved his Sniper and finished it with a charged slash across their bodies.

Edom knelt over his two underlings as they expired. They stared up in awe at their master; born of eons past, limited in intellect but devoted to him and their predetermined life purpose. Edom turned away as their bodies disintegrated. He felt older than ever, and his wounds only now began to trouble him.
“Now it’s just you†said Adrian, his Sniper switched to rifle mode and aimed at Edom.
“That will be enough†Edom rose again and pointed at the baby. “Hand over the child and we can end this fight another day.â€
But Alexa continued to cradle the infant Reptoid. Simply looking into its large, innocent eyes elicited more and more sympathy for it.
“I won’t hand this child to monsters like you†she replied. Edom wore a mixture of grief and outrage.

Just then the sound of a large vehicle came upon them. The two heroes turned to see it slowly crawl over the land and come to a stop. It then began a slow transformation into a heavily armored robot.

betrayer1.jpg

“What is that?â€
They turned back to Edom, but he had vanished. Unseen by them, the aged creature clothed himself again in his black cloak and limped away. It seemed the Ecodroids had decided to up the ante. He would let them this time. The deaths of his underlings and the theft of the Reptoid child seared his mind. What punishment awaited him?

Greg led Galton XII to a point far enough from DinoJet and turned to face him. The other Greenshirts formed a ring around them.
“Here is where you want to fight me, boy?†Galton XII asked mockingly, raising his faceplate. “Look at you, so small and alone. Do you think me Goliath to your David?â€
“You are the last man who should be quoting religion†Greg spat. “Now come at me, Creel!â€
“Why do you drag this out?†Huxley IX asked Galton XII. “Just have him shot and be done with it. We have more than enough for it.â€
“Please, don’t deny me a chance to use my sword. I am a descendant of knights, after all.†Galton XII drew his finely-cut sword and pulled down his faceplate. “Are you this ready for death?†he chided Greg. “Are you sure you don’t want to wed your mind to ours? Do not waste a mind such as yours on something so ridiculous.â€
“I would say the same for you†Greg replied.

Galton XII sighed. It was clearly hopeless to reason with this one. Greg converted his Sniper to the sword and walked up to the former teacher. Sanger IV muttered her discontent to Croly III who nodded earnestly, partly from intimidation of the old hag. Greg held himself steady. His technique with the sword had improved since his last meeting with Creel. But how well could he be against this most skilled of fighters?

Galton XII attacked without warning. Like spectators in an ancient arena the Greenshirts egged the fighters on as blades and bodies clashed.

The Ecodroids soon caught up with Danny and Kay. Monger wielded a large hammer and slammed it onto Moschops’s hood.
“Come out, humans.â€
Danny responded by firing Moschops’ lasers at the robots. The Mechadrones in tow mobbed the jeep, weapons cocked. Kay shot her rifle at them and then forced herself up and fired the Cosmic Vanisher, blowing many Ecodroids apart. Revenger then aimed his massive rifle at the two, as they hurriedly transformed, when Marauder appeared and shoved him aside.
“I’ll take care of these two†he declared.

Revenger growled and tried to throw him aside but Monger stopped him. Mandrill chattered excitedly like his simian namesake as he hung from a tree.

“Wells IV sent me to get some exercise†Marauder replied easily, seemingly not appreciating the annoyance of his higher ranking peers. “You’ve had your chances with them. Let me have one.â€
“I need no help from a rebel†Monger snarled. Marauder then shot Mandrill from his perch, and turned to shoot the two heroes.

They tumbled out of the jeep and huddled together. Kay held her injured body as it hurt from the sudden movement. Danny almost reflexively made to shield her from any further harm. Marauder laughed manically and aimed to shoot again. Recognition suddenly sparked in Danny. The outer plating was changed, but the body of Marauder was familiar.

“What do we do?†asked Alexa. Silo the giant Ecodroid unleashed a barrage of missiles from its body and destroyed a wide circumference around it. DinoJet lay in a perilous location as the missiles just missed it.
“They want to get us back together to fight that thing†said Adrian. He tried to call the others but came up empty. Just as well, he thought. They needed to counter this counter.
“You can fly faster than I run. Get back to the Jet and try to keep that robot distracted. I’ll go try to find Greg.â€
“The Jet barely has any power left†Alexa protested.
“If we leave it alone it’ll reach some place where people are. We have to stall it while we make a new plan.â€
Alexa still wasn’t sure. But as Silo started another volley, she swiftly departed back to the Jet. Adrian ran to find Greg.

Back on board Alexa placed the baby in a chair next to her and set all systems at minimum power to make their supply last as long as possible. DinoJet sluggishly took off and began to lure Silo its way. Alexa barely swerved away from a set of missiles shot skyward. She undocked the top half of the Jet and sent it to land a safe distance away, then transformed the lower half to Robot Mode. The mute Silo showed no reaction. It only continued on its programmed objective. The two robot colossi began their titanic clash. Alexa relied on the Shield to block some of Silo’s missiles and returned fire with her own. But at bare minimum power DinoRobo had little chance of doing much damage.

Three fronts, with slim odds on all of them. Yet the heroes fought on. The world was doomed without them…

Adrian rode toward the direction Greg had led the Greenshirts until he found them ringing around him and Galton XII. Greg kept trying to catch his foe off guard, darting to and fro, continually switching between sword and gun modes on his C-14 Sniper. The descendant of knights admitted the young man’s improved skill and tactics, but it still was a lost cause. His armor deflected the bullets, and some he even managed to knock away with his sword. Adrian watched him parry Greg’s sword strikes and inflict gashes across the body when Greg left himself open. Galton XII slammed his blade into Greg’s shoulder and, to the cheers of his comrades, sent him falling backward with a long, deep cut across the torso.

The red-clad hero made his move. He revved his motorcycle and plowed through the ring, coming up beside Greg and jumping down.

“What are you doing?†Greg demanded.
Adrian was a bit taken aback by his irritation. “Saving you from the look of it.â€
“You should have stayed away†said Galton XII. “You should never have joined Mr. Diem in his mad quest. Now there is no one to save either of you.â€
“I don’t need saving†Adrian declared. “As long as I take as many of you with me to death, I’ll die happy.â€
The knight now attacked Adrian, who defended with apt skill. But Greg pulled him away.
“He’s mine!â€
“Don’t be an idiot†snapped Adrian.
“No one touches him but me!†Greg now sounded rabid. Just looking at Galton XII enraged him now. This educated, elitist murderer whom Terran, whom so many of his peers, had trusted, now stood so close to him. He had to take him down personally. It had to be him. He owed it to Terran, to all of them.
“I thought you were the gallant hero†Adrian retorted quietly. “Look there! Lex needs us†he pointed up to Silo and DinoRobo in the distance.
“What did you leave her for, then? Go back!â€
“They’re going to kill you here!â€
“I’ll kill him first!†Greg shoved Adrian away. “You hear that, Creel! I’ll kill you, you -â€

Adrian threw a hook punch at Greg’s head, sending him to the ground. Greg stared back in shock. The Greenshirts were now laughing at the whole display.
“What a joke†chided Croly III. Galton XII sheathed his sword.
“I’ve had my fun. Gun them down.â€
They obliged with a hail of artillery. Greg and Adrian were sent rolling and flying away, within the ring of enemies and then flung out when it opened. Adrian summoned Raptor to them, and then took out and hastily loaded a cartridge of incendiary bullets from his pack. As the Greenshirts advanced he fired the round, creating a firewall between them and the Greenshirts. Greg fired some random shots into the fire and thought he heard one or two Greenshirts get hit. Adrian got back on Raptor.
“Come on!â€
Greg was reluctant. He had half a mind to plow through the cloud and have another go at Galton XII.
“GREG!â€
Greg shifted his feet, and then turned away. Adrian bade him to ride Raptor in his place and, muttering darkly to himself, used his enhanced speed to run back toward DinoRobo alongside the bike. Galton XII emerged from the fire (his suit was flame-retardant) and watched them retreat with a smirk…

Danny gaped at Marauder. There was no doubt about it; he had seen him before and had had a hand in building him. Marauder however did not understand the statement.
“What’s that? What are you mumbling about? Last words?â€
Kay was looking at him too. “What do you mean, you built him?â€

*BGM plays*
(‘Yume wa yaburetemo...’ from Chouju Sentai Liveman)

Danny didn’t answer. His mind went back to a few years prior when he was still an undergrad. The engineering department had set up a contest among the students with a Terra Nova scholarship as the reward. At the behest of his parents (ever eager for their son to win regard and opportunity) Danny had entered and with a team of fellow students built a human-sized robot. Another team won in the end, and Danny soon forgot the whole matter. Most of his competitors’ nihilistic attitudes (or more, their obliviousness to it) had perturbed him anyway. Those were the kind more suited for a coldly secular group such as Terra Nova, unwitting slaves of their own vanity. Yet at some point, the robot he had helped create was commissioned into the Ecodroids’ service.

“Danny?†Kay repeated, but Marauder cut her off.
“Well speak up! I’m getting bored.â€
“And I’m losing patience†Monger snapped. “Get on with it or I’ll scrap you instead.â€
“I built you!†Danny nearly yelled. The robots looked at each other. Marauder laughed.
“What skinbag could build a masterpiece as me?â€
“I know your design. Someone reprogrammed you into…. whatever the hell you are.â€
“What?†Kay whispered.
“Do you expect mercy for that, if I believed you? Think again.â€
He shot them as they jumped away. Kay came next to Danny and fired back in Shot Mode, then switched to Gatling Mode and sprayed the Ecodroids with bullets, all while ignoring her throbbing pain. Not one to idle, Danny swung his Sniper like a club and brought Marauder down with a bash to the head.

Kay fell on one knee and clutched her chest. She could no longer raise her rifle without great difficulty. Danny saw Monger swing his hammer down on her and moved to intercept, using the thin viscous film secreted from his suit to force the mallet to slide off target. He then did a leg sweep that knocked Monger over and brought Kay back toward Moschops.
“Stop them!†yelled Monger.
Revenger moved in but Danny caught his gun and wrestled with him so that it fired onto the robots instead. Revenger opened up turrets on his body and pelleted Danny. He slammed into the jeep and held himself. Mandrill chattered and fired the cannons on his back.
“Let’s go!†Danny barked to Kay. They knocked aside the Mechadrones, jumped into the jeep and hurriedly made a run for it. Mandrill leapt onto the hood and grabbed at Danny, but Kay with some effort pointed the Cosmic Vanisher at him and blew him apart in one shot. Mandrill’s pieces crashed onto the path before them, and were then run over for good measure.

Monger slammed his hammer into a tree and cracked its trunk. Marauder fired a parting shot and hit Kay’s back. The girl slumped over the Vanisher and collapsed behind Danny’s chair.
“Kay!â€
“I’m fine!†She felt anything but fine. Her body felt crippled with pain. “Keep going, they’re following us!â€
The Ecodroids were in hot pursuit once more. They needed a way out of the valley. Danny soon found a spot where the canyon top and bottom began sloping down and upward respectively to meet each other and made for it. Hopefully the others were faring a bit better… and then they saw DinoRobo in battle with Silo.
“It’s about to fall†Kay whispered in horror. Danny gripped the wheel and sped on…

DinoRobo was reaching its limit. Alexa decided the best she could do was keep Silo from continuing toward civilization, but with systems failing one by one it was becoming a futile cause. Silo bombarded DinoRobo with its missiles, delivered a pounding with its fists and legs, and then sent forth more missiles. DinoRobo collapsed onto one knee. Alexa looked for any weapons that were still functional but found nothing.

The baby Reptoid suddenly shrieked in alarm. She looked up to see Silo backing away and preparing to fire its finisher. The sensors indicated that an immense amount of power was accumulating in the robot’s chest cannons. Alexa came up with a quick, daring idea. After mulling it over for a few seconds she used all the remaining power to get DinoRobo back up and ram into Silo, covering up the cannons. Hopefully the build-up would make the gian Ecodroid blow itself up instead. Silo tried to wrestle DinoRobo away. Alexa kept it in a vice hold, gathered up the baby and abandoned ship.

Silo went off. The muffled blast sent both robots tumbling backward with significant damage. DinoRobo sprawled on its back, mangled and defeated, lying like a vanquished giant. Alexa got caught in the explosion’s periphery and landed ungracefully to the ground.

* * *

Greg and Adrian found Alexa lying some distance from the collapsed DinoRobo.
“Lex! Lex!†Adrian knelt beside and gently shook her. The Reptoid pawed at her body expectingly. Alexa slowly came to.
“Adrian… Greg…â€
“Are you alright??†asked Greg. “What happened?â€
“Well…†Alexa lifted herself up. “I think I put that robot out of commission… at the expense of ours.â€
“What do we do now? Those Greenshirts will be on to us eventually.â€
“Have you called Danny and Kay?†asked Alexa. But there was no need as the two could now be seen speeding over in Moschops. To their dismay they could see the Ecodroids following in the distance. They ran to meet them and Danny came to an abrupt stop.
“You’ve brought a party along†said Adrian.
Danny saw the Greenshirt force coming along the way Red and Blue had come. “So have you. Got any ideas now?â€
“We could barricade in DinoRobo†suggested Kay. She did her best to hide her injuries from the rest of them despite Danny looking back at her in concern. No need to worry about that yet.
“No. No more running†Greg snarled. “Get the Vanisher, we’re blasting these guys.â€
“Do you want to get us all killed?†Adrian eyed Greg. “We need some cover or they’ll wall us in again.â€
“Since when did you become the run-and-hide type?†Greg shot back.
“You’re not thinking!†Adrian yelled.
“This was your idea, wasn’t it? Split us up and now bring us back together as a single target. You should have left me with Creel!â€
“Fine! Next time I’ll just let you die - â€
“Stop arguing! They’re on top of us!†Alexa yelled.

Now they had no choice but to go with Greg. They switched the Cosmic Vanisher to second cannon mode and took aim at the Ecodroids. The robots acted first with an artillery barrage from their bodily weapons. The heroes held their ground as they and the ground around them were ripped by the shots, impatient to finish charging up. With a loud cry Adrian at last shoved the syringe in and let forth a great single energy burst. Several Ecodroids, most of them Mechadrones, were blown apart. Monger, Revenger and Marauder were tossed up and landed back down with a rain of machine parts. The team started to charge another blast but the Greenshirts came in to bail out their robot compatriots. The Dinomen were shot up by their guns and lost their balance.
“Up! Get up!†Adrian barked. They regripped the Vanisher and stood before the Greenshirts and Ecodroids, now standing together.
“Edom has fled, I see†Monger remarked with a touch of spite. “No matter…â€

Together they fired on their enemy. The heroes were lost in a storm of explosions…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bobby hurried along until he found, near a town, a facility manned by Greenshirts. They spotted him before he could hide and drew their weapons. Bobby put his hands on his head to feign submission. One of the grunts came forward, keeping his gun pointed on him.
“Are you alone? Answer me!â€
The Greenshirt tried to force Bobby on his knees. Instead Bobby grabbed him in a headlock in a quick maneuver. The others stood confused. ‘Ill-trained, this lot’ he thought.
“You have nowhere to run...I'm expendable and you will be - â€
Bobby interrupted him by lifting the black visor on the helmet with a flick of a switch on the side and lathered a dash of the mutant Cordyceps fungus onto his cheek. The grunt was then thrown toward his compatriots, knocking some of the others down. Bobby took advantage of this small confusion and dashed towards another one, wrestling the gun away and smashing his head in with it. He sprayed the Greenshirts with bullets and made a mad sprint for cover behind a set of rocks. A back entrance to the building was closeby. If he had enough time he could duck inside and… do what exactly? Bobby hadn’t planned out any strategy since escaping Wells IV. But since he was here, he could perhaps find something he could use.

Bobby waited for the gunfire to stop and then shot randomly at the Greenshirts before leaping inside the building. He raced around randomly until he happened to find a set of the Greenshirts’ blue eagle belt buckles in a room. The footfalls of the grunts were getting louder. He grabbed a buckle and transformed into the grunt costume, then pointed the others in a false direction when they came around the bend. He followed them for a short distance and then broke off again to continue his search. He entered an office adjacent to a chemical storeroom with a large computer terminal. Examining the storeroom’s contents, Bobby, putting his chemistry knowledge to use, carefully extracted some jars and bottles and placed them into a box he found in a closet. These could be used for cheap explosives in his future encounters with the enemy.

*BGM plays*
(‘Tensai ni fukanou wa nai!’ from Chouju Sentai Liveman)

Next he came to the terminal and, after a few minutes of fiddling, managed to access a collection of datafiles. Some of them documented the reagents in the storeroom and explained formulas for the creation of chemical weapons. This by itself did not perturb Bobby; he was well aware by now of Terra Nova’s abilities. But the largest file, the one that seemed to connect all the others, made even one such as himself tremble.

The file detailed an ultimate initiative: the Final Purge. Simply put, it was the foundation for the ‘paradise of genius’ Terra Nova wished to build. Little in man’s history could compare to it. The worst natural disaster would be preferable; at least those were not so evilly calculated and deliberate.
“No…â€
Bobby tried to deny it, but he could not deny what he saw. His cynicism toward morality that he often spoke loudly was mute. Even he could feel the righteous indignation his friend Greg would be having at this.

He had to find and warn the Dinomen. But he did not know where they were… and he dared not go near them lest his infection spread to them. They were the only possible deterrent to the extinction of almost all humanity…. Bobby attained a new resolve. They would fight together, and he alone. He would try to find them, but could only hope it would not be too late when he did…

“Welcome” he said simply. He looked thinner than Greg remembered, and worn down by many troubles.
“Professor” he greeted back. Adrian nodded but said nothing. “Thank you for your help.”
“Don’t thank me just yet. We’ll talk later: right now you need rest… and your case, young lady, some decent medical aid” he added when he noticed Kay holding her injured body. Danny looked away apologetically.
“I’m not blaming you” Lee quickly explained. “God knows you’ve been through Hell. Come in, come in.”
He hurried them inside and then disappeared. Greg wanted to say more, but more of Lee’s associates ushered them away.

For the next few hours they were properly fed, doctored and rested. In the meantime Lee sat anxiously in his office. In a corner sat the Greenshirt Malthus VII, named for Thomas Malthus.
“I have brought them here” Lee told him.
“I know. My colleagues were afraid you had double-crossed us” Malthus VII replied. “Leave the rest to me. You and your people are free to go.”
Lee snorted. “You expect me to believe that? There is a firing squad waiting for me no matter what I do. You’re not letting my knowledge be used against you.”
“Believe whatever you wish” Malthus VII shrugged. He got up to leave. “Your BioMachines will be destroyed once you have evacuated. The Dinomen will be executed here.”
“Right” Lee mumbled.
Malthus VII studied him for a moment, and then left the room apparently satisfied. Lee looked out his small window at the forest. He wished Richard Terran was with him…

Adrian had taken his pack and dumped some of its contents on the bed in his room. To his surprise he found a photo of Janine that had somehow gotten stuffed in with the essentials. He took the photo in his hand and walked over to a glass door overlooking a small garden, staring at her face a long while. A loud knock on the door then got his attention, and he turned to see Alexa carrying the baby Reptoid.
“Hi”
Adrian nodded. “Come in.”
He suddenly wanted someone to talk to, whom he could voice his grim feelings.

Alexa saw Janine’s photo. Her face was vaguely familiar; she might have seen her in the café once or twice. Adrian’s hand crumpled the edge.
“Was she your girlfriend?”
Adrian was silent for a moment. “I think she wanted that” he then said quietly.
“Hmm” Alexa looked at him with sympathy. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. Nothing ever came of it. It’s all just ‘what-ifs’ now.”
He noted the slight sadness in his tone. No, he thought again. Not sadness… just bitterness. He wanted to avenge her, but with their enemy continuing to garner world dominion the fight seemed futile.
“Has Greg said anything about what we do next?” Alexa asked.
“I haven’t seen him since we got here.” And I don’t really want to anytime soon, he thought to himself.

Alexa sat down on the bed and released the Reptoid. Adrian watched it roll and roll lizard-like on the soft surface.
“You’re going to keep him after all?” he asked. “Why?”
Alexa looked at the baby. Perhaps it was because she was orphaned young, knew very little about her birth parents, and had more or less a solitary life disengaged from the mores of her peers, that she could feel empathy for the creature. Not the attraction many girls might have toward a normal animal, but a genuine compassion like a mother for a child. The Reptoids were hatched in groups, relegated to a life of drudgery as expendable grunts for Terra Nova’s ambition. Bobby Lorenz had saved this one from that fate, and thus given it a chance for something better. Perhaps she could give that to him.
“It needs a mother” she answered. “I can be that to him.”
“All it can do is kill.”
“Because that’s what Nova trains them to do. I can give it something better.”
“Are you sure? We live on a knife edge.”
“I can” Alexa repeated. The Reptoid looked up at her with its human-like eyes. “What did Greg say they were, Odontochelys? How about… I name him Odo?”
“Odo?” Adrian smirked. He then shrugged. “It’s your pet.”
Alexa gathered the now christened Odo up again. Not a pet… a child.

Kay, now sufficiently bandaged up, sat together with Danny in a tiny lounge. He tried to think of something to say, but could only watch her slightly reclined in her seat looking at him, smiling in spite of their situation.
“What are you so happy about?”
“Why can’t I be happy?”
But even as she replied Danny thought he could see the façade. She was crying inside. And now he realized what it was he felt for her: compassion. She didn’t belong here, but had it forced upon her. Finding Jennifer drove her on, even if it broke her physically and mentally. For that she had his admiration, and his pity.

Then again, was that truly what he felt? What did she feel for him, if anything? Maybe it was all simply just lust. Danny started to get up but Kay, almost reflexively, held him by the hand.
“Don’t leave me.”
She flushed slightly at this slip of the tongue. Danny brushed a strand of hair from her shoulder. Now she looked like a child, and him the elder brother. Such conflicting feelings were maddening.

But Danny lay back in the couch and stayed beside her. Kay released his hand but kept her head close to his shoulder.

Greg wandered into a mid-sized room that resembled a museum exhibit. The walls were decorated with paintings of prehistoric scenes.

Lee was passing by when he saw the young scientist staring at the collection. Greg heard him come up. “Professor.”
“Do you like them?” Lee asked. “Professor Terran gave many of them to me”
“Some of them are familiar” Greg agreed, now realizing it. He noticed Lee’s melancholic expression.
“Richard always liked prehistory. A time when Earth was untamed and ruled by monsters that… now you only see in stories. If you could see some of the creatures that were here long before us, you’d know truth is much stranger than fiction.”
Greg gave a faint smile and let him continue. If he could miss his teacher after relatively little time with him, imagine how this man must feel given all that had happened.

“I suppose that was part of his draw to Terra Nova. He was quite the environmentalist in those days too. He thought science was the answer to all the world’s ills; that a group like Terra Nova could bring back Earth’s young days, with humans curtailed from destructive behaviors.”
“The cryowells’ discovery made him ecstatic” contributed Greg. “He told me he wanted to bring back ancient life the moment he heard about them.”
“The cryowells were discovered long before you think” said Lee. Greg stared in surprise. “Oh yes. Much of what Nova has put out to the world was found out long before. They just decide the time to let the masses know once they have exhausted the best uses of their discoveries to themselves.”

Greg then remembered the suppression of scientific breakthroughs he had read in Terran’s notes.
“Nova kept the cryowells secret so that they could exploit the genetic material found in them and, in essence, resurrect the dead.” Lee’s voice then turned grim. “But not just that, as you can guess by now. You don’t know how twisted these people are. They took human egg cells and placed prehistoric DNA inside them to create the Biotheres. It took them a while before they got it right. But what evil possessed them to perform such wicked science?”
“Did Terran tell you all this?”
“He did, once he discovered the truth of Nova and left them. To be honest I had never been overly fond of that organization. But what he told me cemented what I felt was true. These are evil people who profess themselves gods among men.”

They stood silently in the room for a moment.
“Why did you stop teaching?” Greg asked out of nowhere.
Lee then, a bit hesitantly, looked straight at Greg.
“There isn’t much time. Get your friends and I’ll tell you all what you must do from here.”
That was all he would say. Greg left to find the others…

Edom knelt before the large Terra Nova emblem. A small audience of members from all three Armies stood on the side as the Fuhrer Nova passed his judgment.
“What should I do with you, Edom? I cannot have my leaders deserting the field in the middle of a fight.”
“Do with me whatever you wish, Fuhrer” said Edom, bowing his head low in resignation. If there was one flaw in Gottfried’s creation of him, it was his soft heart. It bled too much for his fellow bio-engineered creatures. Seeing them die would break his resolve, unlike his robot and human partners who continued on without heed.
“Just knock him off already” said a voice in the crowd. “He’s been useless for years.”
“Give him to us for target practice” grumbled an Ecodroid.
“Feed him to the Biotheres. They won’t know the difference” shouted a Greenshirt named Mengele VIII.

Edom began to stiffen with anger. Such little people, these. How easily he could kill them if he had the leeway. But the Fuhrer ignored their bloodlust.
“Silence.” He paused a moment before going on. “I have reconsidered our strategy. Perhaps expending all our resources on these five… children, is not the way to go. Especially when we still have much to do in reorganizing the planet. So I have asked Darwin XXII to come select our own team of heroes to pit against them.”
Stunned murmurs spread all around. Darwin XXII was a famed, quite formidable Greenshirt. Many a young academic would have killed for the chance to learn sciences from this remarkable mind, and many a fighter would do the same to hone their physical skill. Indeed Darwin XXII would travel to the farthest parts of the world meeting obscure people of violence, academia, or both and bringing them into his fold.
“Edom, I want you to meet him when he arrives. Go now.”
“Yes Fuhrer”

He showered his detractors with contemptuous looks as he departed. He went outside and stood on a runway far from the base beneath a stormy sky, looking like a red spirit of the underworld.

A small plane came into view some time later and taxied down the runway. Edom walked up to the silvery machine and stopped before an opening staircase. First an Ecodroid named Uca emerged.

“You honor me” Edom replied with a small head bow.
“I am going to choose the five members of the Novamen.”

Lee brought the Dinomen inside the garage and showed off the BioMachines in their respective stalls:
OsteusMarine, the blue bomber (now in a submarine mode and sitting in a pool).
PrionCarrier, the green trailer.
SpinoTanker, the red vehicle with the large buzzsaw.
ArchTanker, its pink sister with the assortment of rockets.
AvisGyro, the white helicopter. It had two retractable wings that it could release for a jet mode.
He held their specs on a large portable screen along with a long narrow case, but he said nothing about the latter. Further off a skeleton crew was rapidly repairing and refueling DinoRobo with the aid of large machinery.
“We had the plans for these sitting around for a long time, when Richard began having second thoughts about Nova. Once he knew for sure they would attack, I gathered as many people as I could and told them what was about to happen, then at once began building. Each of these Machines can become armor for DinoRobo, as you call it, for specific situations.”
“These might have been useful earlier” muttered Danny.
“Perhaps” replied Lee. He didn’t even bother with an explanation. Adrian watched him carefully.

“I want to tell you this now” said Lee all of a sudden after bringing the team to the ground level. “I know Richard wanted you, Greg, to carry on and stop Terra Nova. But I must tell you that it’s a lost cause. Five college kids can’t fight an army of thousands, and you won’t find any help. They’ve already begun herding the population into collectives.”
“Is that what you dragged us here to say?” asked Adrian. “We nearly killed ourselves getting here!”
“And you will be killed if you keep on fighting.”
“They’ll have us executed no matter what we do” said Kay.
“And besides, who wants to live under these people?” added Alexa.
“You have lived under people like that all your life” said Lee, now turning cruel. “But it’s only now that you realized their evil. How many of your peers are still blind fools following them willingly? And these are the so-called educated ones; the others are reveling like the end is near. Which it is.”
“So we should give up and go where?” asked Greg. “Why didn’t you just let Nova blow us away?”
“I wanted to give you one last way out. Terran thought you could carry out his will. You may think you can, but I say you will fail. I’m trying to save you.”
“And what if we refuse?” asked Adrian.

Lee gave a sad sigh. He opened the large doors leading to the “driveway” and let them see outside. There at the end of the ramp were Terra Nova henchmen led by Malthus VII. A lump formed in Greg’s throat. It couldn’t be…
“You!” yelled Adrian. He and Danny made to grab Lee but he quickly stepped away, out of the line of fire. A set of guns were trained on the five youths.

They were cornered…

“You sold us out!” Adrian raged to Lee.
“What did they give you?” added Greg. “A feathered nest when the dust settles?”
“Will you surrender, or will you fight?” Lee asked the team neutrally.
“What do you think?” asked Danny, who had drawn his GenBuckle. The others followed suit and braced themselves for an ugly fight out of here.
“Are you prepared to die?” Lee pressed them.
“What -”
“Are you prepared to die, Mr. Diem??”
Greg stared at the professor. His face now looked expectant, or hopeful, for one answer. But he felt his own drive falter for one brief moment.

It was a question he knew must be answered, but had never been asked until now.”
“… I am… we are.”
“Then take this, you and Mr. Fernandez.”

Lee thrust into their hands the case he had brought.
“I know you two are very different, but you’ll need to overcome that if you want to use this and survive.” He added for the others “There are tools for you too, scattered throughout this area. Try to win them if you can. It’ll prove your word to me.”
“What the hell are you trying to pull here?” demanded Adrian, still indignant.
“No time for that! Raptor and Moschops are ready. Go! Run!” Before they decide to charge in!”

Raptor and Moschops rolled in ready to go. Adrian shot Lee one more incredulous look and would have argued more, but Greg shoved him to his bike and clambered into the back of the jeep, leaving Danny to the wheel. Off they raced toward the waiting horde, who opened fire. Greg fired back with the Cosmic Vanisher and just barely managed to break their lines for them to get through.
“Follow them!” ordered Malthus VII.
“I’ll take Red” said Davenport V who was with him. After seeing him against the skilled Galton XII he was curious to have a fight with him, to see how a man as himself measured up to the great Greenshirt leader. He chased after Adrian on his own motorcycle. Meanwhile his associates split Raptor and Moschops apart.
“Let’s split their forces again!” yelled Greg to the other three. “If Lee’s stuff is out here, you’ll cover more ground finding them anyway!”

Not waiting for them to argue, he leapt off Moschops and used his armoring like a ram to smash into Davenport V. They tumbled to the ground, and Greg took his bike to ram him again.
“Greg!” yelled Adrian further ahead. He cursed to himself as he hurried back, all the while avoiding fire from passing Thunderbirds. Together they encircled him going clock-and-counter-clockwise. Davenport V hailed a Thunderbird and caught onto a dangling hook to get away. As he was brought up he pressed a detonator on his waist. Greg and Adrian heard a ticking sound from the purloined bike.
“RUN!”
Greg dashed the bike down and made a break for it, but was still too close for comfort when the bomb went off. He and Adrian were sent flailing out of sight.

Alexa glided low from the jeep to parts unknown, enemies on her heels. Danny and Kay drove on alone…

Greg and Anthony came to on a field of sandy ground with strands of grass peeking out at random spaces.
“A fine idea you had” Adrian grumbled loudly, jumping right into the coming fight. “Risk our lives to find some friend of Terran’s, just to have him deliver us to the enemy. Great job, genius.”
“I’m not so sure…” Greg began. Adrian howled indigence.
“God, how stupid are you? He stabbed us in the back. Just like everyone else. How long are you gonna be dragged by the nose before you get it? We’re on our own!”
“Then what did he give us this for?” Greg waved the case given to them. “And that stuff he told the others to find?”
“That’s probably another bomb” Adrian sneered. “Open it and give him another laugh.”

Greg threw the lid open. Inside was a double-bladed sword: one part colored red and with a blade shaped like an elongated tooth; the other blue, with its blade designed like a sharp fin. On the underside of the lid were three nameplates: Dino Fang for the red half, Pteron (Fin) Riser for the blue half, and Fang Riser for the combined weapon. To Greg it looked a bit like a fossil exhibit in a museum.
“Can you separate the two?” asked Adrian.
“Dunno” Greg looked for a way to break the swords apart, but missed whatever it was. “I guess were supposed to share it… oh joy.”
The two exchanged looks. Right now that seemed quite impractical; their differences had never been more apparent, and more perilous to their survival. But what choice did they have?
“Let’s get out of the open” Adrian commanded. Greg silently followed as he gathered up Raptor and walked with it down the flat expanse, continuing to examine their new weapon.

They had not gone but a few miles or so down their path when they heard, and then saw, the Thunderbird with Davenport V swooping for them, guns blazing.
“Get down!”
Greg nearly lost the Fang Riser as he threw himself to the ground. Adrian leapt onto Raptor as it came for another pass.
“I’ll try baiting it. You make a run for it!” Adrian ordered Greg.
“But-”
“Just do it!”
Greg ran on ahead. Adrian began riding in a zigzag fashion before the Thunderbird, avoiding the explosions tearing up the ground. The Thunderbird flew even lower, resembling a bird of prey about to snatch a scampering victim. Adrian then had a wild idea. As the fighter was nearly on top of him, he leapt onto the underside and fastened himself with his clawed hands and feet, leaving Raptor riderless.
“Where is he??” Davenport V demanded from the pilot as they turned around to find nothing. The pilot stumbled for an explanation but came up naught.
“Nevermind. Go after the blue one.”
Adrian hugged the underside as they flew away toward Greg.

* * *

“There!” yelled Davenport V upon spotting Greg. “Get lower!”
Greg somersaulted on the ground as the fighter swooped down low and tore up the ground with artillery. He then saw Adrian clinging to the underbelly and attaching a makeshift bomb where the hook had been lowered. He then let himself fall and landed near Greg.
“Good thing we had one left over” he said.
The Thunderbird was coming for them again, but the bomb then went off. Metal and fuel rained down over them. They saw nothing of the pilot, but Davenport V’s body tumbled down and landed with a crash. Adrian was taking no chances; he held his Sniper and inched toward him. The body stirred; the Greenshirt slowly dragged himself up. His armor plates containing Charles Davenport’s Eugenics Creed were charred and smoking.

“Don’t move another inch” said Adrian. “Or I’ll really blow you away.”
“You cannot harm me” Davenport V sneered. “This!” he indicated the verses he revered almost as scripture. “is my protection.”
He lunged at Adrian and wrestled the gun away. He fought the red hero hand-to-hand, forcing him back toward Greg. Now seemed as good a chance as any to use this double sword. Greg swung wildly; he tried twirling the twin blades and got some clumsy hits in. Fang Riser vibrated with his movements; it almost resisted his dominance. They were not in sync. Davenport V easily knocked it out of Greg’s hands and sent him tumbling with some quick punches to the chest. Adrian caught the weapon and tried doing the same, with slightly better skill, but with equal result.

Davenport V laughed at their sprawled bodies.
“Aren’t you tired yet? Come on, plead for mercy like your friends did, get it over with. Are you really fighting for them, those dumb brutes so easily led astray? You heard them squealing like pigs before the slaughter. Have you no shame? No pride, Gregory? A mind like yours?”
“Shut up” growled Greg. “You have no right to talk.”
“I have every right! Only we have the right! We are building a new world, a better world! Don’t you realize you foolish you look now?”

*Red Dino’s Theme plays*
(‘Message Of Love’ by Journey)

Adrian was silent. He thought back to the photo of Janine he had found, and her last terrified screams. Hers and all the others he, they, could not help. Then he thought of Alexa and Odo, and what Terra Nova really thought of life…

‘Yes’ he thought to himself. ‘This was the battle. Those for life, for love, against those for death, for an existence meaningless except for its evil, godless masters.’

But he had never fought for life. He had never fought for anything. He had known all that was good, and all that was wicked, even when his peers and teachers, for all their knowledge, did not; but never had he the belief that good could overcome. He had long avoided the struggle… and thus, he now realized, had not lived.

He rose and brought Greg up with him.
“Take the sword” he told him. He held the red side. Greg took the blue side. At once their grips on the weapons felt more harmonious. Davenport V snorted at them but watched carefully. Something, somehow, clicked in the joint connecting the two swords and they came apart. Adrian and Greg now wielded Dino Fang and Pteron Riser respectively.
“I agree with my friend here” Adrian told the Greenshirt. “All you’re building is a world of death. ‘We the living’ (at this Greg was impressed and Davenport V scowled; both recognized the Randian quote) would rather stay here.”
The heroes charged and began swordplay. When they moved together their control over their blades was greater, and their power was thus greater. Right now their minds and hearts were united; they fought for Life, against the army of Death.

Davenport V soon found himself overwhelmed. Adrian and Greg encircled him, switching swords, combining them and breaking them apart again.
“Charge and finish!” said Greg. He and Adrian connected swords again, charged them and disconnected once more. They ran single file and each slashed at one of the five Creed plates. Two broke and fell to the ground. Greg then rooted himself and let Adrian jump off his shoulder. He tossed Pteron Riser for him to catch. Adrian twirled the charged Fang Riser and landed with a slash across the chest, breaking a third plate, and cutting from the Greenshirt’s front to the back, destroying a fourth.

Greg reappeared by Adrian and took back Pteron Riser. Together they stabbed Davenport V through the last plate and hit flesh. He stifled a cry of pain as the energy surged through him. The two heroes left the swords in him and watched him stumble about with contemptuous satisfaction. The staunch Greenshirt at last collapsed and laid in pitiful defeat.
“So…” he gasped as they looked down on him. “Kill me. Let me rejoin this Earth… this new Earth… this old Earth... return to its purity.”
They looked at him coldly. Somewhere inside Greg was tempted to grant his request and end it quickly. Adrian betrayed no such qualms; the moral indignation in Greg won out, and he made no motion. They watched Davenport V slowly expire, and then removed their swords from his body. The remains of the Eugenics Creed lay about him like a testament to Terra Nova’s (hopefully) eventual ruin.

Two giant monsters suddenly emerged from a large reservoir nearby: the fish Biotherium Leedsichthys and the pliosaur Biotherium Liopleurodon. The duo ran and rode toward them, dodging the waves of water splashed their way by the Jurassic behemoths’ bodies.
“Now what do we do?” asked Adrian. “DinoRobo is back with Lee.”
Just then they saw DinoJet fly out and turn into the giant robot. It landed in the water and blocked the two Biotheres’ path.
“Lee must be watching us somehow and sent it” said Greg. Adrian made no retort.
They hurried inside the robot and began battle. The monster dragged DinoRobo through the water and down into the depths. Here they were in their element. DinoRobo’s movements were sluggish, and it was continually slammed by their powerful blows. The robot’s shield did little to mitigate this. Greg noticed the pressure gauges indicating dangerous levels.
“We need to get them to the surface” he told Adrian.
“I don’t think that’s happening” was the reply as Adrian wrestled with the controls.

*BioMachine Theme plays*
(‘Kimiru Ze!! Denjiki Gattai’ from Denji Sentai Megaranger)

Just then OsteusMarine in submarine mode piloted its way to the battle and drove back the Biotheres with missiles. It circled around DinoRobo and came in front of it to chest level. Data was transmitted to the robot’s cockpit computer for combining the two mechas, under the title “Placoderm Custom” A diagram showed Blue Dino at the cockpit head with Red Dino taking his place in his usual spot.
“Placoderm Custom?” asked Adrian.
“It’s worth a shot” said Greg. “Give me the chair. Quick, they’re coming back.”
They swapped seats and Greg initiated the combination sequence per the instructions.
“Placoderm Armament” announced a voice. OsteusMarine split into pieces of armor for the legs, arms and torso. A fish-like helmet placed itself on DinoRobo’s head and covered the face, leaving only the eyes exposed.
“DinoRobo Placoderm Custom.”

The Biotheres were upon them. DinoRobo was now able to move more effectively through the water, like scuba gear facilitating a human swimmer’s abilities. The three titans clashed unseen from the surface but for some ripples and bubbles. The monsters’ clobbering was rendered useless by the new armoring, a callback to the days of the great placoderm fishes. Eventually the Leedsichthys became discouraged and swam toward the surface.
“Thank you” muttered Greg. “That’s making it easy.”
DinoRobo pursued Leedsichthys, but Liopleurodon grabbed hold of its legs. Adrian quickly fired several cannon shots at the beast, sending it falling back to the depths. They lost sight of it as it swam away, but there was nothing to be done about that.

Up they went after the fish Biotherium. DinoRobo grabbed hold of it and dragged it to the shallows, then shoved it to dry ground. It wriggled for a moment and then staggered to its feet.
“I’ll disengage and charge him. You take the sword and finish him off” Greg instructed.
“Right”
Placoderm Custom split up into DinoRobo proper and OsteusMarine in jet mode. Inside the blue mecha sat Greg, who flew straight at the monster throwing bombs. While it was distracted Adrian took the iridium sword and charged the blade for its finishing move. He went in as soon as he found an opening and stabbed the Biotherium clean through, then withdrew the sword and slashed across the body. It fell defeated on the ground and at once began to decay.

Adrian and Greg breathed sighs of relief. Neither of them spoke. They withdrew from the spot; some time after they left, the Liopleurodon crawled out of the water and, either unrecognizing or uncaring, took a few bites from what remained of the Leedsichthys. It would be back…

Edom found Darwin XXII unlike most of his fellow Greenshirts. Most viewed him as a scientific curiosity at best, but rarely their friend, or their equal. (Of course he was not their equal, he reminded himself. They were gods, after all. He was just their creation.). This one however treated him quite well, even admired him. “You are proof that we are capable of wondrous things” he had said. It was nice to be admired, to be truly appreciated for once.

They stood on a podium before an assembly of young students that Edom had helped pick out when they surveyed them and their work. Few showed any reaction to all that had happened since their organization’s rapid seizing of world control. In fact, one could wonder if they were even aware of it. When Edom voiced this to Darwin XXII, he gave him a knowing smile, almost a laugh.
“Don’t worry about that, friend” (Edom felt pleasure at this title). “They have been well conditioned to devote everything to the cause. Whether they know it or not.”

Edom missed the last part, or chose to ignore it. Darwin XXII now addressed the group.
“Thank you for coming. As you might have guessed, you have been invited to this little meeting because your work up to now has attracted positive attention. Not to dismiss the minds of your peers, but you are the cream of the crop, so to speak. I have a very special project in the works, something that will help complete our world revolution. Only five of you will be selected to join me. But that shouldn’t surprise you; you are all used to competition by now.”
A murmur of polite laughter passed through the audience. They all looked in awe at this elite among Greenshirts.
“Well, with that said: who is willing to join me? Who wants to prove him-or-herself to the world?” Come, come! Stand tall!”

Edom noted the scant few who seemed less enthralled than the rest about this whole thing. One or two anxiously looked to the door. One more hid well, but not well enough for Edom to miss, an anxiousness to escape not just this room, but all of Terra Nova. In his eyes was knowledge of what was outside. This Edom did not know how to comprehend.

But most of the youths rose proudly and stood with raised heads. A medium-height Burmese girl at the front row looked particularly zealous: the sister of Pink Dino, Jennifer Zahau. Darwin XXII took note of this and was pleased. That Darwinian drive of which he (and the twenty-one people before him) had been inspired to take that naturalist’s name was alive in her, in all of them.
“You have a good eye. This will be a fine lot” he told Edom.
“What is it you are creating?”
Darwin XXII smiled. “Novamen.”

Article 13: No Greater Love

Davenport V found himself overwhelmed. Adrian and Greg encircled him, switching swords, combining them and breaking them apart again.
“Charge and finish!†said Greg.

“Placoderm Armament†announced a voice. OsteusMarine split into pieces of armor for the legs, arms and torso. A fish-like helmet placed itself on DinoRobo’s head and covered the face, leaving only the eyes exposed.
“DinoRobo Placoderm Custom.â€

Up they went after the fish Biotherium. DinoRobo grabbed hold of it and dragged it to the shallows, then shoved it to dry ground. It wriggled for a moment and then staggered to its feet.
“I’ll disengage and charge him. You take the sword and finish him off†Greg instructed.
“Rightâ€

Kay and Danny continued to drive away from the pursuing enemy.
“I’m gonna go left†said Danny. “You jump out and go right.â€
“But - â€
“Just do it!â€
Danny made a sharp turn so that Moschops faced the enemy. Kay fired some shots from the Cosmic Vanisher and then bailed out. She disappeared down a winding, sloping path covered with thick grass...

Adrian and Greg landed DinoJet and OsteusMarine near a grove of trees. Raptor stood nearby waiting to be picked up.
“So what now?†asked Adrian. “Your contact is a double agent. Where does that leave us?â€
“I don’t know…†Greg mulled. “We need some kind of strategy.â€
“We need to know what Lee’s plan is. He helped us this time, but we’ll probably get screwed over again later.â€

As if on cue a message from Lee came in to them.
“Professor†greeted Greg.
“I see you’ve gotten the hang of your new gear†Lee complimented. “I’m glad.â€
“Are you going to explain what’s going on here?†asked Adrian. “Whose side are you on?â€
“I’m sorry for doing things this way, but this is a very delicate situation for me. I’ll explain everything to you if ever I get the chance.â€
“If ever?â€
“Your friends should find their weapons soon. Take your Jet and find them if you can. And when you’re all back together you must defeat Malthus VII. I’m certain Terra Nova is up to something while you’re distracted here.â€
Adrian wanted to protest more, but Lee cut him off.
“I must go now. Remember what I said, and stay safe.â€

He ended the transmission. Adrian gave Greg a skeptical look.
“I don’t like this.â€
“Join the club. But there’s nothing for it, is there?â€

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kay arrived at the bottom of the sloped path below a worn ledge that had once been a small waterfall. She began following the long dried-up streambed, with no idea where to go next. Her ears tuned in to any suspicious sounds. Her eyes darted around nervously. On the opposite slope appeared Revenger, who had seen Kay coming his way and snuck across the streambed before she caught sight of him. He aimed his large rifle at her back and fired.

*BGM plays*
(‘Volt, kougeki kaishi! (2)’ from Chouju Sentai Liveman)

Kay was thrown forward as her back exploded. She quickly sent shots back at Revenger but the robot was rapidly approaching. His gun was more powerful and she was sure his physical strength could outmatch her ‘diamond fists’. So she kept on running, shooting back as she went. Revenger kept coming and shot grenades at the girl. Kay kept running until she saw Monger straight ahead with something in his hand. It appeared to be a mace of five chains, each with a hard rose-colored knob.

“Monger†Kay acknowledged with dread. Revenger blocked her escape from behind.
“Where do you think you’re going?†asked Monger.
Kay raised her rifle to shoot but Revenger pointed his at her in warning. Monger now presented the mace for Kay to see.
“The dear Teddy Lee had this hidden near here. ‘Dactylace’ he named it. I’m going to presume he left this for you.â€
Monger swung the mace so that the chains wrapped around Kay’s gun and tore it from her hands, throwing it uselessly to the ground.
“You’re not scared of me, human girl†he sneered. “Destroying my Brawler has gotten to your head, perhaps?â€
“Does that still get you ticked off?†Kay asked, attempting a cheek.
Monger snorted. “Let’s see how good you actually are. Revenger!â€

He cracked Dactylace at the pink heroine. Revenger unleashed himself on her…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A group of Reptoids lead by Biotherium Mammuthus watched White Dino glide down and land in the distance. Among the Biotheres Mammuthus was one of the few blessed with above-average intelligence, enough to achieve a level of ability half that of Edom’s.
“There’s the white one†he grumbled to the others. “Follow her.â€

* * *

Alexa had landed in a patch of ground that resembled a half-built museum exhibit. Large bird statues and some skeletons were placed all around like some sort of nesting colony. If this was the spot where one of Lee’s weapons was stored, he certainly wasn’t being subtle about it. Sniper in hand, she carefully made her way along, turning left and right, when she caught a whimpering sound coming from behind. She looked around and saw Odo stumbling up to her.
“Odo!â€
The young Reptoid leapt toward Alexa and began purring like some green, scaly cat.
“What are you doing here?†she asked as she knelt down and patted his head. “How did you find me?â€
Odo clung to her. Reptoids must have highly tuned tracking abilities, Alexa gathered. Which probably meant the other Biotheres were as well. She had to keep moving. It would be better to leave the baby behind and not be hindered, but when she looked into his eyes that reflected his vulnerability, she knew how heartless that would be. She coaxed Odo to climb onto her back and hurried on.

Eventually though the Biotheres did catch up with her. Mammuthus parted the wall of monsters and stood in front of them, blocking the heroine’s path.

*BGM plays*
(‘Zettaizetsumei’ from Choujinki Metalder)

“That is far enough. You have nowhere left to go†the elephantine beastman declared.
Alexa thought of gliding up and above them, but couldn’t find a way to gain altitude from her current position. Odo shuddered at the sight of the monsters and clung tighter to her.
“That’s a Reptoid†Mammuthus declared. He came closer to get a better look. “You have one of ours in your unclean hands!â€
“That’s right†Alexa raised her gun.

Mammuthus turned to the Biotheres and then back to her.
“I won’t risk harming it†he started. Edom’s lessons of protection toward their own returned to him. “Give it to us and I will let you live.â€
“As if†Alexa responded. “I wouldn’t give him to you for anything. He won’t be just another slave for your human masters.â€
“I’ll forgive your blasphemy†said Mammuthus as the other Biotheres began to howl for her blood. “But why do you care about this thing? What is it to you?â€
“He is a child†replied Alexa simply.
She flashed back for a second to her own orphaned life, and her eventual resignation to solitude. Always offering friendship and compassion to others despite her own misfortunes. A deep longing to love as much as she could… perhaps because she wanted love in return, but also because she could uniquely understand how vital it was:
Kay for Jennifer…
Greg for Terran and humanity…
Herself…. for the innocent who had not yet begun to live.

“You want us, come get us!†she yelled.
Mammuthus ordered to attack. Alexa and Odo began leading them further into the field of avian displays…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edom and Darwin XXII observed the candidates’ training. A Greenshirt named Carson VI (named for Rachel Carson) had been brought in to supervise and stimulate them in their work. The trials involved physical exercises, intense lecture sessions, and proposals for new experiments, chiefly on new enhanced Biotheres. Jennifer was among the most promising.

“Pride and arrogance are strong motivators†Darwin XXII explained to Edom, who eagerly took in whatever the Greenshirt taught him. “Our comrades don’t like to hear this, though they know it’s true. They like to believe they’re shaping a new world, making new discoveries, and we certainly are. But they believe their education and intellect ranks them above all others on Earth and that they, we, should be their masters.â€
“Shouldn’t we though?†asked Edom. “You are gods, after all. Gods must lead those lesser than them.â€
“Certainly we should, my friend†Darwin XXII laughed. “But†he now turned peculiarly somber, as though betraying thoughts he ought not to have. “Pride can lead one to ruin. And sometimes… dare I say it… I feel we have too much pride. I remember what the traitor Richard Terran once said… ‘We are building a new Tower of Babel, and sooner or later we will be brought down’.
Despite the accusation of treason Edom noticed the lack of derision in how the man quoted him. It was almost as though he secretly agreed. ‘But how could that be?’ Edom wondered to himself.

*BGM plays*
(‘Chousen’ from Choujinki Metalder)

Suddenly a man burst into one of Carson VI’s lectures.
“What are you doing?†she asked hotly. Her students looked at him with annoyed curiosity.
“Is Darwin XXII here? I want to know why I wasn’t invited to this.â€
“Now look here - †Carson VI began but Darwin XXII entered the room and waved for the woman to calm down.
“Mr. Trevor Hoge†he announced. Carson VI gasped. The students looked at each other with confusion. One girl among them, Tami Winters, stared in disbelief. Trevor caught her gaze and gave a smug wink.
“Word was that you were dead†Darwin XXII continued, but he knew what the explanation would be.
“Part of my DNA, you could say†Trevor chuckled. “My cloning and enhanced growth project was a success.â€
“Almost a success. Your clone did succumb to the rapid growth’s side effects. But a brilliant performance, nonetheless. The enemy was certainly fooled. I hope you forgive me for your exclusion. I can imagine you’ll end up as team leader.â€
“Thank you sirâ€

Trevor looked at his peers with supreme confidence, even arrogance. They turned back to Carson VI expectantly and she resumed the lecture. Trevor took an empty seat. Darwin XXII observed them with vindication. His point was proved; the candidates were now more determined than ever to show themselves off. The more spurring, the better…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kay was being pummeled by her two robot adversaries. Monger struck her with Dactylace as she rolled on the ground while Revenger shot up the ground around her.
“That’s enough†said Monger smugly as Kay lay sprawled on her back. “I see your match with Brawler was just a fluke. Or do you still want to prove me wrong?â€
Kay fumed at them. She wondered, a bit ironically when she thought about it, how such marvelous constructions could possess such an arrogant contempt for their creators.
“No? Then let’s finish this. Revenger, put an end to this waste.â€

Revenger put his gun to Kay’s head.
“Humans built you. If you hate them so much†Kay muttered. “Why do you serve them?â€
“I serve?†Monger asked incredulously. “I built Revenger to kill my creator who turned on me! My Ecodroids build each other! We may work with humans, but they are not our masters. They study us! Once the New World Order is built we shall usurp those would-be gods. I shall make this a world of machines. The only perfect life there is!â€
So there was disunity within the ranks, thought Kay. But she couldn’t see how they could exploit that, if at all possible. Nevertheless the little rant made something click in her.

*BGM plays*
(‘Seishum Orbufror (1)’ from Denj Sentai Megaranger)

Revenger prepared to shoot her head. Kay quickly grabbed the gun and shoved it to her side so that the shot hit the ground, then scrambled out from underneath.

She planted her feet firmly and assumed a ready pose, concentrating her power into her hands and feet. Revenger fired. She charged forward and took the shot to her chest, faltering but not stopping, and began throwing rock-hard punches at the machine bodyguard. Monger with a snarl flogged her back. Revenger picked her up and threw her toward his master. Kay though used the momentum to place a flying charged kick to Monger’s chest, sending him flying and releasing the mace. She caught it and with a few blows dented Revenger’s plated body and forced him back.

Monger gaped at the searing dent in his body. Kay stared back at him.
“Are you satisfied?â€
“How did you do that?†Monger snarled in disbelief.
“You have your drive… and I have mine†Kay whispered. She thought of her sister. The sister Terra Nova had taken. Getting her back compelled her to go on. Familial love. Here was a drive that was more than any machine such as these could gain, for they lacked the heart and soul… the humanity… to comprehend it. Revenger crawled back to his master’s side. Monger threw one last ugly look at Kay and activated a remote to summon the repaired Silo. They made their escape as the giant robot rained artillery down on the pink heroine.

Alexa had fought the Biotheres all the way to the largest avian statue on the field, that of an Argentavis. This one had one foot outstretched and a two-nozzle cannon shaped like a particularly large talon pointed up. As Alexa dragged and slashed her opponents near the statue the cannon fired and blasted the monsters away.
“What’s that?†Mammuthus demanded.

Alexa figured it out at once. This must be Lee’s weapon for her. She came up to the statue and noticed the small print on the body: “Nykhannonâ€. She tried to remove it from the statue’s foot and was mobbed by the Reptoids, who were blasted away again. Mammuthus came and tore Odo from Alexa’s back.
“Odo!â€
“Step away!†Mammuthus ordered.
Odo began biting and clawing his captor. As Nykhannon fired again, Mammuthus cruelly used the baby as a shield. Alexa screamed as he was sent careening in the air and landed in a heap far away.

*White Dino’s Theme plays*
(‘She’s On Fire’ by Amy Holland)

That did it. Alexa grabbed Nykhannon again and tore it off the statue. In the process she inadvertently pressed a button that unfolded the weapon into a jetpack. Not stopping to question all this, Alexa jammed it on and began to fly around the field, cutting down each Reptoid with her C-14 Sniper in Sword Mode. Then with Mammuthus remaining she flew low, switched to Gatling Mode and sprayed ammunition at the beast. Mammuthus sprayed a thick cloud at the heroine with a trunk-like appendage. When she fell back to earth he removed two sharp “tusks†and made to cut her to pieces. Without hesitation Alexa switched back to Cannon Mode and set it to full power, then released a deluge of energy the monster’s way. Mammuthus was sent backwards and broke through one of the avian monuments. He let out an elephantine bellow at his defeat.

Alexa ran over to Odo and cradled the child in her arms.
“Odo…â€
The baby Reptoid writhed weakly. Alexa removed her helmet and looked him over motheringly.
“Damn you…†Mammuthus growled as he got back up. “Damned ignorant trash!â€
Suddenly DinoJet appeared on scene and blasted Mammuthus before he could attack again.
“Looks like you’re holding your own†Adrian called down.
“Thanks anyway†Alexa replied with relief. “Throw a rope down!â€
A cable was let down and Alexa and Odo were lifted up.
“Now let’s find our Burmese duo†said Greg innocently, but to which Alexa gave an intrigued look. They soon caught Silo on their monitor with Kay running from its attacks.
“There’s Kay. Let’s go.â€

* * *

Kay was thrown about by yet another explosion. DinoJet came to the rescue and bombarded the giant Ecodroid, then transformed into DinoRobo, ready for a rematch.
“Get in!†called Alexa.
Before Kay could though ArchTanker came rolling in with its own barrage of lasers and missiles. Kay jumped inside and hurriedly learned her way through the controls as it continued fighting through automation. Silo stomped around wildly as it avoided ArchTanker and OsteusMarine while grappling with DinoRobo.
“Want to try Placoderm Custom again?†asked Greg a bit eagerly.
“Couldn’t hurt†said Adrian.
Placoderm Custom was assembled and Silo’s artillery became less effective. But they still needed something that could really hit back.
“Kay, see if there’s anything about combining your mech†Greg called. Kay looked through the computer and found a diagram for “Mesonychid Custom†with Pink Dino at the front of DinoRobo’s cockpit.
“Got it. I’m gonna activate†said Kay.
“Go for it.â€
Kay entered the combination sequence.
“Mesonychid Armamentâ€

OsteusMarine undocked. ArchTanker split into pieces of armor for the legs, arms and torso. A mammal-like helmet placed itself on DinoRobo’s head and covered the face, leaving only the eyes exposed.
“DinoRobo Mesonychid Custom.â€
Their robot was now equipped with strong artillery. Silo approached for another attack. Kay, now in the lead seat, let loose on the Ecodroid. The new weaponry did the trick. Silo suffered heavy damage. Parts clattered to the ground. Systems shut down. DinoRobo took out and charged its sword, and then cut through Silo’s body to finish it off. It collapsed and exploded before its feet…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Malthus VII barged into Lee’s office.
“Who do you think you’re fooling? You’re playing both sides!â€
“What do you mean?†asked Lee innocently.
“Don’t give me that. We both know you’re helping those kids. You pointed them to weapons you had laying around and keeping sending your Machines to their rescue.â€
“I lured them to my grounds for you to get rid of. They have no idea whose side I’m really on any more than you apparently do.â€
“You dare to give me lip?†Malthus VII approached dangerously. “When this is over you and your staff are going to be executed, and this base destroyed.â€
“You were going to kill me no matter what I did. Please, don’t take me for a fool if you demand the same. I won’t live to see the so-called paradise you plan to create. One way or another I’ll be one of the broken eggs for your omelet.â€
Malthus VII sneered but said nothing.

“But I do implore†added Lee, now with some pleading in his voice. “That you spare my employees. I’m the danger to you, not them. Let them go, or make them Greenshirts like you.â€
“And invite in potential subversives?†Malthus VII shook his head, but then reconsidered the request.
“Then again, that was part of the barga. Turn in the Dinomen and be spared. But as there is no deluding you… very well, your people can come with us. I’m going to go find the Dinomen myself. I don’t expect you’ll try to escape, but I wouldn’t advise any attempt.â€
“I’ll stay right here and be good†said Lee with a slight smile.

The Greenshirt disappeared. Lee waited a moment and then hurried with his final plans. Before his end he had to explain himself to the heroes, and warn them of the horrors that awaited them…

Danny had managed to lose his pursuers. He arrived at a marshy area with a slight chill in the air. A prehistoric giant amphibian might have called it close enough to home. Danny followed a muddy track along a bog when he saw movement in the distance. He caught a figure lurking on the other side of the bog with eyes on him. It was Marauder.

At once Danny jumped out and readied his C-14 Sniper. Marauder burst into the open and stood on the opposite shore.
“Gotcha!â€
They both fired and were felled by each other’s shots. Marauder stomped into the bog waters and made to fire again, inadvertently tripping a nearby sensor. A model of a labyrinthodont amphibian floated up to the surface.

From its mouth emerged a greenish object: another of Lee’s special weapons. By the nature of its hiding place it was meant for Green Dino.

*BGM plays*

Marauder and Danny looked at the weapon, then to each other. Both knew each other’s intent. They stared at each other, waiting for the right moment, and then charged toward each other for a clash of arms. The still water became a frothy mix as man and robot fought. Marauder could well match Danny’s martial art skill. He wrestled him off his feet under the surface. Now Marauder was out of his element, but Danny, with his Prionosuchian abilities, could maneuver through the murky water and get some blows in. Marauder finally shoved him toward the surface and blasted him out of the water, taking the weapon with it. Danny landed on the shore and saw it clatter near him. The small print on it read “Amphilet†(Amphibian Gauntlet).

Marauder waded out and aimed his cannon again. Danny made a leap for the Amphilet but the robot grabbed his arm and tried to lift him. His BioSuit’s secretions allowed him to slip from his grasp and he again dove and seized the weapon. He turned it over to see how to use it but Marauder fired an extra-charged blast. Danny was sent flying, knocked into a tree and lay still. Marauder approached and tore off his GenBuckle. Danny’s suit disappeared and he lay at the Ecodroid’s mercy.
“Now hold still… it won’t hurt as much.
But just as he was about to finish him off a transmission from an unknown source interfered with Marauder’s circuitry. His firing mechanism locked.
“What??â€
Then he saw Wells IV coming out of nowhere with a small remote.
“What are you doing?!†Marauder demanded.
“I have an idea for this one. Take him.â€
Marauder hesitated. Wells IV narrowed his eyes dangerously. “I said take him.â€
The robot lifted Danny up and dragged him along as he followed his master. Wells IV picked up Amphilet and took it with them…

Danny was brought to a tiny clearing within the bog and handcuffed to an exposed root. Marauder and Wells IV began to argue over what to do with him.
“The Fuhrer has a death warrant on these people. Just let me put him down right now. I’m starting to get bored.â€
“And I’m telling you he can more useful under my control. The Fuhrer says so… you don’t even know what the Fuhrer really is - â€
“Oh? What is he, then? Is this treason I hear?†Marauder then aimed his cannon at the Greenshirt. “Maybe I’ll deliver you both.â€
“Can you shoot faster than I press this button?†Wells IV waved his detonator. “One move and I’ll blow you apart, and no one will miss you. You’re too wild for your own good. Perhaps I should have let Monger scrap you after all.â€
Marauder glowered back at him, but the scientist ignored him. “Now keep a watch on him. I’m going to see what else Lee might have hidden around here.â€

Danny watched him leave and then turned back to the robot.
“You don’t seem much appreciated.â€
“Who said you could talk?†Marauder snapped, waving his cannon at Danny’s chest.
“Do you really want to kill me and admit you’re ashamed of yourself? If we didn’t meet Terra Nova’s standards, you certainly can’t.â€
“You did not build me!â€
“The creation cannot surpass the creator. So you’ll always be second-rate, hell maybe third-rate. You’ll never win their approval.â€
“I don’t need it! They hate what they can’t control, so they hate me. I only show them my superiority.â€
“They know you were built by unworthy humans, even if you deny it.â€
“Stop saying that!†Marauder knelt close to Danny and jammed his cannon onto his head.
“Are you afraid of the truth? Your friend just said you should have been left to rust. You weren’t made by them. I wonder why they decided to turn you on.†He looked the robot over and added “In fact I don’t know what we were thinking building you.â€

Danny surprised himself with his boldness. Only Marauder’s whim was the difference between life and death, so why was he goading him?
“Shut up!†yelled Marauder and fired a shot close to Danny’s head. Danny ducked and looked back at him.
“Why didn’t you shoot me? What are you afraid of?â€
“Afraid?†Marauder snorted.
“If you defy your master he’ll blow you up. That’s all. You’re being coerced and you hate everyone for it.â€
Marauder said nothing, but he did start to lower his weapon.
“Let me ask you something†Danny continued, now a bit more emboldened. “If it weren’t for that device, what would you be doing?â€
Marauder thought for a moment. Were it not for the threat of death, he might be like a roaming criminal, doing what he pleased and shooting anyone who tried to stop him. No one would then curtail his enjoyment.
“I would do whatever I pleased, and everyone would know better than to cross me.â€
“Is that it?â€
“What else is there? You humans make laws controlling each other. Were it not for them you would be just like me.â€
“I wouldn’t†objected Danny.
“Is that so?†chided Marauder.
“There is no law making me fight you.â€
“Then why are you here? Why do you keep opposing Terra Nova? Why risk death?â€
“Because it was right.â€
“Is that it?†Marauder threw back Danny’s earlier question. “Some foolish human sense of right and wrong? Is there nothing else that drives you? Anything?â€

Now Danny fell silent. Up until not he hadn’t even thought about that, but now that is was asked he was forced to come up with an answer. What drove him? Besides justice for all the rest (which went without saying for all of them) Greg had vengeance for Terran. Kay had her quest to recover her sister. Alexa had Odo to shield from a live of slavery and uncaring. Adrian he suspected had something personal driving him even though he had not come out to him about it.

But Danny had none of those things. Justice alone might not be enough. He then wondered had he ever a personal motive for anything. For his parents’ sake he did his best in school, or at least well enough. But it could never grab his interest; he always drifted to the larger issues of life, of the history of the world and how the ignorant always repeated it while pronouncing their superiority to their forefathers. By comparison the strictly academic-oriented among him seemed quite small.

Just after high school he had discovered a small dojo run by a Vietnamese expatriate. He had one daughter his age, and she had made an impression on him. From then on for a time began studying Muai Thai and other martial arts forms with the man and got friendly with the girl… until he discovered she was just as crass, just as vain and vapid as the rest of his peers. Her father seemed to have given up on her. And later so did he.

In college he had discovered and joined the underground fight club, where he put his teaching to use. Where he was only adequate in academics, he excelled in his matches, but all under anonymity. No one would ever know his talents. No one would appreciate his insightful mind because he didn’t think like most of the rest of his peers. He would look at posters and fliers done by students using imagery whose origins they were ignorant of, all espousing some stupid, petty or amoral goal. He saw their self-absorbed posts about minutia on social sites. Sometimes he thought he alone saw what was going on and where the world was headed with such brilliant fools in charge.

So why did he do this? For himself? Maybe he still had the desire to prove his worth, to himself if not anyone else. And he wondered, looking at Marauder, whether that was at least motivation for him as well.
“Nothing, then?†Marauder prodded. “You have no reason to be here.â€
“I fight for myself†Danny answered at last without much conviction. “Just as you wish you could live for yourself.â€
Marauder looked at him, trying to understand. He finally raised his cannon again and shot the handcuff apart, freeing his maker.
“There. Now I can chase you down and finish you… as I wanted.â€
“You are willing to die?â€
“Never mind that. You get out before he comes back. And take these with you†he threw Amphilet and his GenBuckle at him. “Then we will have a proper match.â€
“If that’s really what you want...â€
“It is. Now go!â€

Danny found Moschops and made his escape. Wells IV returned a little while after.
“Marauder!†he thundered upon seeing his captive gone. But Marauder had already begun chasing him down, and had even left scorch marks from his cannon on trees and rocks for Wells IV to see. The Greenshirt however was unappeased. He suspected foul play on the Ecodroid’s part. He kept the detonator in his hand and followed their path…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest of the Dinomen flew around to find their teammate, and eventually caught sight of him escaping the marshy area into the open.
“There’s Danny!â€
They began flying lower. Danny meanwhile had stopped to see if Marauder was still pursuing. Sure enough the Ecodroid was fast approaching, cannon at the ready. From the other side were coming a band of Mechadrones led from behind by Malthus VII and Reptoids headed by Biotherium Mammuthus. Getting out he quickly transformed and, after looking it over, placed it on his right arm. There were four modes; right now it was set as a combination flame thrower and freeze gun.

*Green Dino’s Theme plays*
(‘The Legend’ by Real Life)

Marauder had reached him.
“Now… let’s finish this.â€
Danny aimed his gauntlet and released a burst of flame before Marauder could attack, forcing him back. He could feel the intense heat against his arm and feared burning himself. Next he turned it on the Mechadrones and switched to the freeze setting, sending a burst of cold gas that froze their joints. With them disabled he changed Amphilet to Turret Mode by attaching revolving four-barrel gun and folding out a trigger, and blasted them to pieces.

DinoJet was now visible on the horizon. Marauder moved to Danny’s left where Malthus VII had arrived.
“Marauder!†he greeted. “You’ve caught a Dinoman for us. I commend you.â€
“He’s not for you†Marauder assumed a ready pose before Danny. “He is mine.â€
He shot at the Biotheres’ feet before they charged at Danny. Malthus VII scowled and then smiled upon seeing the DinoJet on its way. He wouldn’t have to chase them all down now.
“There’s Danny with Marauder!†said Kay.
“Let’s go!†said Adrian. They dropped down on cables
“After them!†yelled Mammuthus to the Reptoids. They all began engaging the heroes.

Danny and Marauder charged each other. As he went Danny came to a decision. If he had nothing of his own to fight for, he could fight for his teammates. For Kay’s sake, for Alexa’s and Adrian’s and Greg’s. He could turn his compassion into a driver. The rest of world may not take notice of him, but his friends would know he was worthy. And he would know for himself he was worth something. He converted Amphilet to Blade Mode so that a rotating blade shaped like a protocercal finned tail was placed at top, and slashed and jabbed at Marauder while avoiding his shots. Marauder threw him backward and fired after him. Danny searched his weapon and found the Knuckle Mode, which attached a large fist to the end. He ran through the next round of shots, charged up the gauntlet and threw a hard punch at Marauder’s chest, throwing him to the ground several feet away. Lastly he switched back to Blade Mode, charged the weapon again and leapt toward Marauder, stabbing him through the torso and releasing a burst of sparks.

Marauder tore Danny off him and stumbled away, continuing to gush sparks and steam. The other Dinomen, having defeated the grunts came to join Danny. He looked to each of them and solidified his conviction.
“There you are, you scrap pile†said Wells IV, arriving at last.
“Wells IV†greeted Malthus VII with Mammuthus. “Looks like your pet got away from you.â€
“He cannot follow the simplest order†Wells IV spat back. “Now look where it’s got you. You should have left him my prisoner!â€
“To do what?†replied Marauder. He then turned to the other two. “Should I tell you what he said about our Fuhrer?â€
They turned sharply back to Wells IV, who waved his detonator.
“I should blow you apart right now! Or do you want to keep on living? I can make you stronger. I can give you revenge. Or I can end your life here.â€
Marauder balked. He looked from his comrades to the Dinomen. Danny watched him closely. The robot dragged himself up and stood between both sides.

“Well?? Submit to me!â€
Still he made no decision. Wells IV finally got fed up and made to press the trigger. Danny then drew his Sniper and destroyed the device with one shot.
“What?? You…!â€
Marauder looked to Danny with surprise. “Why?â€
Adrian was just as surprised. “What are you doing?†Danny waved for silence.
“I gave you a choice†he replied. “No one can threaten you now. You decide what you want from here on.â€
Marauder felt a new thrill. He turned back and shot Wells IV dead, then attacked Malthus VII and Mammuthus in a crazed spree. The heroes looked at each other in confusion.
“What did you do?†asked Greg.
“I freed him†replied Danny. “And now I will kill him.â€
“But then why bother?†asked Alexa.
“I helped build him, and until now he was a slave and I could pity him. Now he has made his first free choice, so I no longer need pity him.â€
Greg and the girls seemed not to understand but Adrian could. He patted Danny’s shoulder.

“Let’s finish them. Cosmic Vanisher!â€
They summoned their cannon and aimed it at the three. Adrian shoved in the syringe and let forth a burst of energy. Malthus VII leapt away just in time. Mammuthus and Marauder were destroyed on impact.
“Now for you!†yelled Adrian, moving the cannon toward Malthus VII.
“I don’t think so†said the Greenshirt. “I, Malthus VII got you here, and I’m not letting you leave alive.â€
Adrian pulled back the syringe again. “Wanna bet?â€
Malthus VII flipped a switch that turned on a homing beacon. Soon a crashing sound was heard as Biotherium Liopleurodon stomped to their location. Adrian stopped the charge-up and the team dove for cover as a foot came down on them. The beast then lowered a hand and brought the Greenshirt to his shoulder.
“Back to the Jet!â€
They scrambled back into DinoJet and undocked to make DinoRobo and begin bare-knuckle fighting the monster. But just as before, the giant Biotherium was more than the robot alone could handle.

Then suddenly PrionCarrier, hovering with SpinoTanker on its back, along with AvisGyro and OsteusMarine came to the rescue. Laser fire and missiles forced the monster back. Green, Red and White Dinos got inside their respective BioMachines. SpinoTanker landed on the ground and cut it with its extendable saw. Malthus VII ordered Liopleurodon to run.
“After them!†called Greg. Data poured onto their computers about the remaining three Custom Forms.
“Teratorn Armamentâ€
AvisGyro split into pieces of armor for the legs, arms and torso. A bird-like helmet placed itself on DinoRobo’s head and covered the face, leaving only the eyes exposed. A pair of wings unfolded to give the robot flight.
“DinoRobo Teratorn Custom.â€
Alexa took the lead seat. DinoRobo flew at top speed and caught up with the monster. It lifted it and Malthus VII up and dragged them to a large undeveloped paved-over lot, then delivered a flying kick.
“Theropod Armamentâ€
AvisGyro undocked. SpinoTanker split into pieces of armor for the legs, arms and torso. A reptile-like helmet placed itself on DinoRobo’s head and covered the face, leaving only the eyes exposed.
“DinoRobo Theropod Custom.â€
Adrian took the lead seat. The large saw was now strapped to the right arm. DinoRobo “skated†swiftly over the ground with new thrusters, outpacing the slower Liopleurodon and made several cuts across the body.
“Eryopid Armamentâ€
SpinoTanker undocked. PrionCarrier split into pieces of armor for the legs, arms and torso. An amphibian-like helmet placed itself on DinoRobo’s head and covered the face, leaving only the eyes exposed.
“DinoRobo Eryopid Custom.â€
Danny now took the lead seat. DinoRobo rolled on wheels toward the weakened monster. The Eryopid Armament served as a giant battery, feeding the robot extra energy and providing a general power boost. Danny summoned the iridium sword IridCaliber and channeled some of this energy into the blade, making it shine like a giant spotlight. Liopleurodon tried to strike and was burned by the charge. Danny was about to push the throttle when he found his teammates placing their hands along with his. They nodded in unison and threw it forward. DinoRobo made a vertical slash along the monster’s body. Malthus VII let out a last defiant cry as he jumped down from the falling beast and was lost in the explosion…

The final choices for the Novamen had been made. Uca and Edom stood beside Darwin XXII as he looked upon the honored five taking their own GenBuckles.
“Let us begin our work†he told them. “The Purge will soon begin. It will be up to you to take care of our enemies. Everything now will depend on you.â€
The five lowered their heads respectfully. Darwin XXII chuckled to himself at a joke he knew these young ones would never comprehend…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Dinomen flew back to Lee’s base only to find it in ruin. Nothing of value remained; only the BioMachines’ garage remained relatively intact, though even here the computer records had been purged. Neither Lee nor his staff was to be seen.
“Not even a note saying where he went†muttered Adrian. “He said he would explain everything.â€
“Malthus must have caught on to his double agency and… took care of him†proposed Alexa.
“There has to be something here†said Greg as he searched for that thing.
“Here’s a disc†said Danny suddenly, finding a round disc hastily hidden with a three digit number on the cover.
“That was Terran’s office number†said Greg. “It must be a code for us.â€
They found a still working computer and inserted the disc. A voice recording from Lee now began to play.

“To Greg and everyone, if you have found this disc it means Terra Nova has caught on to me. My staff has been taken prisoner, so they will at least remain alive. As for me I am marked for death. Do not look for me; you have far more important things to deal with now.â€
The youths looked at each other as Lee continued.

“I owe you an explanation about what you’ve been through. Malthus VII knew of my friendship with Richard Terran and offered to spare us in exchange for luring you here to be killed. But I wasn’t to let Terran’s last wish go to naught, so I sent the BioMachines to your rescue while still acting as though I was tricking you further, and I hid my special weapons for you around this land in the hopes you could recover them.

But I also did it to see how determined you really were. Terra Nova is a highly organized, deeply rooted enemy. You haven’t begun to see what they plan to do. If you’re returned to find this then I can believe we can rest our hopes on you. I left teaching because I had become disillusioned by today’s students. So many of them are unwitting narcissists with no moral convictions. Even the smartest of them are full of vile beliefs that they themselves will not realize. These were the ones Terra Nova could easily delude into joining them. They deceived the world for over a century by saving they would save it. If they only did a little research, paid attention to the warnings, they would know the truth. You five I believe may be the last good generation.

The last thing I must tell you is Nova’s ultimate plan. They call it the Final Purge: a systematic extermination of all the ‘unworthy’ and creating a new world of the ‘geniuses’. Earth will return to its primordial state with only pockets of civilization run by the elite. Those few ‘unworthy’ that were spared from death will be nothing more than slaves for the ruling brains. A full schematic has been recorded on this disc. Your peers that joined this group have no idea what is coming, they are too far gone to see the truth. I warn you not to try making them. They are your enemy. You must destroy them before it is too late, and all too soon it will be.

My final wish to yo is to live as long as you can. You may not come out of this alive. Your best chance for survival is to stick together and fight as a unit. I pray for your survival, but if you must fall for the cause, know that millions may be saved by your act. Fight and survive. Always remember that you are on the right side, you fight for Life. Always choose life. Godspeed and farewell.â€

The recording ended. For a moment the five youths were downcast. Greg then tried to rally them with a nod an encouraging smile. They had made it this far and there was no going back now. The only way out was to go forward, together. Nothing need to be said: they knew what to do…

By luck the team had found a brief but well-earned respite in the fighting. Greg, Kay, Alexa and Odo played touch football with an old medicine ball that had been found in DinoJet’s clutter and lost some of its weight. Odo and Alexa paired against Greg and Kay. The young Reptoid learned quickly; even without his enhanced abilities he could give the more experienced Greg a run for his money.
“That’s it” he finally acquiesced after another defeat. “I want him on my team.”
Alexa gave a teasing snort and patted Odo approvingly. Kay sighed and flopped on the ground. Odo, perhaps enticed by her dangling ponytail, leapt toward her like an excited dog, making her shriek and scramble away, seeking Alexa for protection. Greg chuckled at the show. Savor this, he felt something in his mind say. You may not laugh again for a long time.

Elsewhere, Adrian and Danny were sparring on their own. It was almost like the “old days” (or so they felt to them since joining Greg on his crusade) when they had competed against each other in the clandestine fight club. They called it a day as the sun began to set in an orangey sky and paused to look out on it together.
“Do you mind me asking you something?” said Danny.
“What?”
“Is there anything that makes you… want to keep going?”
“You mean besides stopping Greg from getting himself killed?”
Danny smirked. “Right.”

Adrian stared at the sunset for a moment. He hadn’t told anyone of what plagued his thoughts. Only Alexa had stumbled upon it, and least for now, he wanted to keep it that way. But looking at Danny now, he could perhaps keep his own story from repeating.
“I don’t want any more regrets” he answered simply.
“That’s all?” It seemed rather vague.
“That’s all.”
Danny looked at Adrian’s face for anything more, but saw no hints of the sort. “So if we died tomorrow…”
“If we died tomorrow I would regret not staying alive” declared Adrian. “I won’t die until Nova is defeated, or if I can go down with it.”
Danny’s thoughts wandered to Kay. Adrian saw the conflict on his face.
“Take the chance now lest tomorrow never comes” he advised, attempting to sound poetic. “If we’re fighting for life, let’s seize some of it ourselves.”
Danny looked at him once more and Adrian affirmed himself with a nod. Without another word they began heading back to the others…

The heroes were roused the next morning by a new enemy assault. The first step of the Final Purge was now underway; worldwide Terra Nova was setting up a series of immense towers and herding those who would come quietly (of which were divided into “brains” and “labor” based on imposed aptitude tests) to special camps. Resistors were not hunted down; their actions alone branded them for death anyway. While this was going on a party led by Darwin XXII, Uca and Edom was attacking a city, both as incentive for the people to cooperate and perhaps be saved, and to draw out the Dinomen for their next big reveal.

And drawn out the Dinomen were. They rode past the fleeing people and stopped between them and the enemy.
“Welcome Dinomen” said Darwin XXII. “I am Darwin XXII of the magnanimous Terra Nova, and we have a surprise for you.”
“If you want to surprise me, surrender” said Greg.
“Oh come now, I’ve put a lot of time in setting this up” Darwin XXII continued. “Trust me, you’re in for a treat. But first you must warm up by getting through us”
“Easy enough” Adrian drew his Sniper. “Charge!”
They first took care of some Greenshirt grunts, Mechadrones and Reptoids while chasing down the three higher-ups. Once they caught up Adrian and Danny took on Darwin XXII, while Greg and Kay fought Edom and Alexa pitted against Uca. In combat Uca seemed a bestial version of Revenger. His immense right arm served as both shield and club, and his left arm’s installed cannon could match Alexa’s Nykhannon, all the while releasing guttural cacophonies. Alexa resorted to using Nykhannon’s jetpack mode and shooting and kicking his head and back from above. Darwin XXII, himself a skilled martial artist, proved a difficult opponent, able to evade and counter swiftly for a man his age. While catching Adrian’s oncoming kick from the front, he delivered a roundhouse kick to Danny’s head from behind and threw Adrian off his feet. He then threw his short side cape over Danny’s head and proceeded to strike him several times before throwing him back towards his comrade.

Eventually the two sides regrouped.

“I think that’s enough, wouldn’t you say?” Darwin XXII remarked to Edom and Uca. “Let’s bring the main act.”
Edom nodded and gave the Dinomen a mirthful chuckle. He was eager to get back at them for his previous humiliation, most particularly Red and White Dino. He summoned a large black vehicle to drive up and open its back doors. Out stepped a team of five clad in BioSuits matching those of the heroes, but with inverted colors, a green Earth instead of blue, and prehistoric invertebrates as motif animals.

neosentainovaman2.png

The Dinomen could only gape. Doubles of them standing proud before them.
“May I present to you, Project Novaman!” Darwin XXII introduced. The five announced themselves as:
“Red Nova!” (A prehistoric giant jellyfish)
“White Nova!” (Cameraceras, a giant orthocone)
“Green Nova!” (Brontoscorpio, a giant Silurian sea scorpion)
“Pink Nova!” (Arthropleura, a giant Carboniferous millipede-like creature)
“Blue Nova!” (Meganeura, a giant Carboniferous dragonfly)

The two teams stood opposing one another, color against color, sizing each other up and waiting for some unseen signal to commence battle. Darwin XXII watched like an impartial naturalist. At last Red Nova mad the first move and led his team into the first clash. They scattered across the cityscape and fought individual duels. Despite this being their debut the Novamen could match the already tired Dinomen move for move, and soon overpowered each of them. Like the Dinomen, the Novamen’s BioSuits gave them unique abilities: Red Nova’s suit was lined with small stinging cysts; Blue Nova had enhanced speed and agility; Green Dino had enhanced physical strength, particularly in the hands for scorpion-like grappling; Pink Nova had protective armoring like Blue Dino; and White Nova had grooves on her hands and feet that let her wrap around objects without losing her grip, as well as climb any surface.

The heroes regrouped in a heap and backed away from their rivals as they approached.
“What do we do now??” asked Alexa.
“Stay our ground -” started Greg.
“No! Fall back!” interrupted Adrian. “Fall back and think up a strategy.”
Before Greg could protest he sprayed the space between them and the Novamen with smoke bullets and used the cover to make an escape. When their rivals cleared the smoke they had vanished.
“Fan out” commanded Red Nova. They spread out and began hunting for the heroes…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Dinomen took refuge beneath a stone stairwell.
“Did you know about this?” quizzed Danny to Greg. “That Nova had BioSuits like ours?”
“This is stuff Terran had worked on while a member, so I didn’t exactly rule it out” explained Greg. “But I didn’t think they would create a team like ours.”
“Who are they though?” asked Kay.
“Does it matter?” retorted Adrian. “They’re the enemy. That’s all we need to know.”
“I’m glad to see you so resolute, Red Dino” said a voice. Darwin XXII had sprung up on them, having used Uca’s surveillance abilities to spy them out. “You may be surprised at who are behind those helmets.”
Adrian fired a shot from his Sniper, which was blocked by Uca. The Greenshirt clicked his tongue disapprovingly.
“Now you just gave away your position. How careless.”

*Insert Song plays*

Indeed the Novamen were now swooping in on the direction of the gunshot. The heroes leapt out and confronted them for Round 2. Uca lent a hand (perhaps not appreciated by his comrades) by firing shots indiscriminately their way. They managed to fare slightly better, but once again the Dinomen were thrown down. The Novamen took positions on top of the staircase and peppered them with shots from their own guns, standard issue Greenshirt grunt rifles. Uca let fly another round of his own and forced the team out of their costumes and sprawled on the ground. For a moment some of the Novamen appeared surprised at their foes’ identities, White Nova in particular. Behind his helmet Red Nova smirked as he looked upon Adrian and imagined the shock he would receive if he saw him.
“Now for the biggest shock” said Darwin XXII almost like a narration. He watched the Novamen expectantly. Red Nova gave his teammates the ok and together they deactivated their suits.

Just as the old Greenshirt had said, this shock was the largest.
“Trevor?!” gasped Adrian. Trevor Hoge, whom he thought he had struck down, was now Red Nova. Greg stared in horror at Tami Winter, now White Nova, whom had been a friend from back home he lost contact with. Blue Nova was Kojo Ntoko, a West African studying in America whom Danny had seen a few times, and known for his radicalism. Green Nova was Dmitri Petrovic, a youth of Serbian ancestry with a blotched face and neck and sickly eyes. No one happened to know him. But the worst blow was for Kay. Pink Nova was revealed to be her sister Jennifer.
“Jen!” she wailed, not willing to believe it. Jennifer was not moved.

Darwin XXII chuckled giddily.
“Well how about that? My Novamen are charged specifically with your termination” he explained to the Dinomen. “Now that you all know each other, how do you plan on dealing with it? You are the man of nature, Mr. Diem, as am I. I’m sure you will glean a way.”
The Novamen disappeared and were followed by the three commanders. The heroes were left defeated where they lay to stew in this new dilemma…

Despite this being their debut the Novamen could match the already tired Dinomen move for move, and soon overpowered each of them. They regrouped in a heap and backed away from their rivals as they approached.

Greg stared in horror at Tami Winters, now White Dino, whom had been a friend from back home he lost contact with.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A sullen mood gripped the Dinomen as they returned to the Jet. For a few moments they sat separate from each other in silence. Then at last Adrian spoke.
“So what’s our plan gonna be? These guys are clearly a distraction from the main operation.”
“We can’t ignore them though” said Danny. “They’ll keep baiting us until we chase them.”
“Then I suggest we wait till they’re together and blow them up from here.”
“Hold on” interrupted Greg. “Let’s not jump to anything just yet.”

Tami still weighed on his mind; she was the last person he would have imagined to get mixed up in this, much less be part of a special team equal to theirs.
“What’s there to discuss other than strategy?” objected Adrian. He apparently had no more qualms over the matter, or was hiding them very well. “You’re not thinking of reasoning with these guys, are you?”
“It’s at least worth a shot - ”
“No it isn’t!”
“- Just to see where they’re coming from!”
“What is wrong with you? You know exactly what they are! Soulless bastards! Why do you think they revealed their faces? So you’ll hesitate! I thought you’d have learned by now.”
“This is different” insisted Greg, his temper rising. Alexa interrupted them when she noticed Kay turned away.
“Kay?”

Kay had been ignoring the argument, too busy trying to choke back tears and maintaining some composure in front of the others. But inside she was completely heartbroken. To have found her sister and ready to embrace her, to say everything was alright, only to see her as a willing participant in this heinousness, had left her nearly shattered. And to not even show a hint of emotion toward her! How could she do this? She mumbled to be excused and left the others to go to her room. Only there, alone, did she let the tears fall. She didn’t know how to continue from here, though she knew it must be done. Her old doubts were creeping back. Did she have the temperament needed to fight? Could she live up to Lee’s last hope?

She sadly resigned herself to the fact that she had no choice…

Carson VI had gathered the Novamen together and lathered them with praise for a splendid debut, with Darwin XXII smiling approvingly behind her. They weren’t much affected by it, being used to recognition for their talents by now, but nevertheless still glad to know that others knew their greatness. But one of their number, Dmitri, was not among them. Of this Tami was curious.
“Excuse me ma’am” she interrupted Carson VI. “But where is Green?”
“Green is out performing services for Galton XII at the moment.” Carson VI answered.
“What services, exactly?”
Trevor and Kojo shot her disapproving glances from either side. Carson VI was less critical but still answered with finality.
“Green has special talents that Galton XII deems useful for his research. If he decides to reveal it to you, he shall.”

Green Nova, Dmitri Petrovic, made Tami nervous, more so than being a Novaman itself. She kept a neutral expression for Trevor.
“I’ll see you later tonight” he reminded her before leaving. It was a threat. Tami hurried out of the room and made herself scarce for the rest of the night.

Dmitri watched bunches of young people walk or stumble in and out of a nightclub in the twilight. Even with all that was going on, for people like these the party went on; some out of sheer ignorance or apathy, others out of a sense of hopelessness and wanting to extract just a few more drops of hedonistic pleasure before the chop. In the new order they could be adequate dumb laborers. None of that mattered to Dimitri though, beyond that it made them easy prey.

A gaggle of friends walked out of the club and after a moment of loitering on the street split up into smaller groups or couples. Dmitiri picked one such couple and stealthily pursued them. The girl’s fingers were flying over the button of her phone, her eyes glued to the small screen and oblivious to everything but what she saw and what her partner was prattling on about. Dmitri stalked behind them until he was within striking distance, and then baring his unusually sharp teeth soaked with rabid foam, he pounced like a crazed man. The male he beat down and subdued quickly He managed to scratch the girl’s leg as she ran away in terror. Dmitri bit down on the man and released the infectious foam into his body. Then he surreptitiously placed a remote tag on the body and went after the girl, quickly catching up to her and delivering the same treatment.

He then disappeared into the night, leaving his victims convulsing on the street. Soon they two would be plagued by the disease that had ailed him from birth. Galton XII, the man whom had taken him in when everyone else had abandoned him to death, would now have more subjects through which to study the disease’s effects. And Dmitri could once more satisfy his vengeful bloodlust on the cruel, ignorant masses…

Adrian had risen early from a restless sleep and occupied himself with examining the team’s weapon cache. He noted the need to forge more caulking, smoke and other specialized bullets to replenish their stock. He even pondered raiding a Nova base, if they could find one. Come morning he sat in the cockpit doing maintenance on his C-14 Sniper while monitoring for enemy activity.
“Morning” Kay mumbled as she wandered in still drowsy. “Anything going on?”
“Nothing that we’re picking up” Adrian replied.

But as Kay looked for something to eat he then noticed that another roundup was taking place. The Novamen were not participating in it however; instead he found Trevor and Jennifer with a bunch of Greenshirt grunts at the construction of another large tower. Adrian leaned over the monitors and studied both situations, trying to decide on now they should act. Kay came up behind him and froze upon seeing her sister on screen. Adrian looked her way and noticed this.
“Hold on” he warned carefully. But Kay was already on her way out.
“Don’t.”
She couldn’t wait out another argument. To her surprise Adrian didn’t lecture, but looked at her with sympathy. He sat back in his chair like a tired general stuck with two bad courses of action. Kay went down to the vehicles’ hangar. Adrian followed after.
“I’m going with you.”
“I don’t need - ”
“Yes you do” he said authoritatively. “I’ll drive.”

They got inside Moschops and descended to the surface…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adrian and Kay found an unpaved road that led them to a position below where the tower was being built. Kay jumped out and began searching for her sister above. Adrian more cautiously kept his GenBuckle in hand, already regretting their location.
“Jen!” Kay called. For a moment no one answered. Then a transparent red-blue ball shaped like a comb jelly and filled with energy was lobbed from the top. The two heroes leapt out of the way as it exploded upon impact.

*Red Nova’s Theme plays*
(‘White Death’ by Sabaton)

Someone at last poked his head out.
“Trevor!” yelled Adrian.
“How do you like those, Adrian?” Trevor called back. He held another of the explosive balls. “These are my CtenoBombs.”
“You were always a bit of a pyromaniac” Adrian replied coolly. “Come down and let’s chat.”
“I’d rather you come up… if you can.”
Trevor kicked the CtenoBomb down. Adrian and Kay transformed and Adrian leapt up to catch it before it could land. But upon touching it he was stung by cilia that elongated down the ridges and threw it against the rock wall.
“Come on!” he ordered to Kay. They scrambled up toward the top while dodging more of the bombs. When they at last reached the top Adrian wasted no time in tackling Trevor before he could do anything more. Trevor rolled away and transformed.
“I wondered if you thinking you killed me might affect your psyche” he said. “But it’s like you don’t even know me.”
Adrian drew his Sniper in Sword Mode and attacked.

As they went at it Kay saw Jennifer continuing to oversee the tower construction. Three mechadrones formed a line between Kay and the site.
“Jen!” Kay yelled. “For God’s sake turn around! Say something!”
She defended against and made short work of the Mechadrones as they shot her.
“Jennifer!” she shouted once more. Her sister finally sighed and turned halfway with an annoyed look.
“I don’t have time for you now. Don’t you see I’m busy?”
Kay was flabbergasted. She grabbed Jennifer by the shoulders and shook her.
“I don’t understand! Why are you working for these people?? Don’t you see what they’re doing??”
“Of course I do. That’s why I’m a part of it. You’re the one who doesn’t get it. You never did.”
“Come with me! Now!”
“Get off!”
She threw her sister aside. Kay tried to grab her GenBuckle before she could use it but Jennifer dodged and turned into Pink Nova. Pink Dino could only stare in frustration.
“I’m not going to fight you!” she declared.
“No!” yelled Adrian further away while engaged with Trevor, risking a moment of distraction. “Face her!”

Jennifer wasn’t moved. She took her silver-gray gun and jabbed it forward. Kay jumped back and was soon pelted with bullets bursting on her suit in small sparks. With no alternative but to heed Adrian she charged at Jennifer and began assailing her with claws and hardened fists, trying to subdue her into a better receptive mood. Adrian’s fight with Trevor was less restrained. He willfully wielded his two blades, C-14 Sniper Sword and DinoFang, and kept Red Nova from getting more of his bombs. Trevor actually knocked the former out of his grip and used it for himself in a proper sword duel.

“Is that what you’re telling your friends? To be as unfeeling as you?”
“You’re one to talk about unfeeling” Adrian snarled. “Maybe I’m actually becoming the cold-hearted scientist you wanted me to be, just not on your side.”
“You twist my words” Trevor mock lamented. “You always warp what people say.”
“I don’t need to when they’re already twisted.”
Adrian jumped and fell backward, grabbing Trevor with his legs and dragging him down, and landing DinoFang against his neck. Trevor violently rolled them sideways so that he broke free. He pumped the Sniper’s handgrip up and down to charge the blade and swung. Adrian parried with a charged DinoFang. The swords bounced off each other and then sliced across each user’s bodies and made them stumble.

Meanwhile Kay had brought her sister further down the slope.
“Stop this, Jen!” she pleaded once more, but Jennifer only knocked her away. Kay slid down and looked back up at her.
“Nova’s lied to you, to everyone! Don’t listen to them! They want to kill everyone!”
“We’re restructuring the population for the planet’s sake” Jennifer replied as coolly as if she were making a presentation.
“And you would have me die for that?? Mom and Dad??”
Jennifer snorted and shot her gun again. Kay covered herself. Her intelligent sister was not listening to reason. Outright defying it. An explosion brought her attention to Adrian tumbling down to her position. Trevor had now attached to his gun a grenade launcher-type attachment for his CtenoBombs.
“You’re stuck on old theories, friends” he said to them. “We would gladly welcome you if you weren’t so stubborn.”
Another bomb was sent. Adrian shielded Kay and shot it out of the air, but the explosion managed to throw them off their feet regardless. Kay landed in a heap and lay there. Adrian scuffed the ground beneath him angrily.

Suddenly reinforcements arrived. Greg, Danny and Alexa, having finally figured out what was going on, flew the DinoJet in and blasted the two Novamen with the ship’s guns as cover while they met up with their teammates.
“That’s enough” announced Greg. “You’re outnumbered. Stand down.”
DinoJet then destroyed the still incomplete tower, much to Trevor and Jennifer’s rage.
“You only outnumber us right here” said Trevor. “But Terra Nova surrounds you several times over. You can’t win.”
“This is here and now” said Danny.
“You have no scope of mind” Trevor shook his head. “So we meet again as enemies until you see the truth. Until then...”

He gave Jennifer one last CtenoBomb and let her throw it as a parting shot. They used the explosion as cover for their escape. Adrian threw a rock in anger. Kay stared at the destroyed tower…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once the team returned to the ship the earlier fight resumed.
“Why did you two go off on your own?” Greg demanded.
“There was no time to call you” answered Adrian. “Or rather” he indicated Kay, “she wouldn’t wait.”
“Are you blaming me?” shot Kay with sudden indignation.
“I’m not blaming anyone. But you were in quite a hurry… for all the good it did.”
“I’m not going to ignore my sister” Kay replied. “And I won’t take any more of your arguing” she added, indicating Adrian and Greg both. “That’s all you do, and it doesn’t get us anywhere!”

After a pause Adrian conceded this point.
“You’re right. Let’s decide right now what we’re gonna do about Novaman. And who is going to lead us?”
“You want an actual team leader?” asked Danny. “Well that’s been Greg. We’re all here thanks to him.”
“Let’s not make this about that” Greg tried to counsel.
“I think we should” said Adrian. “Look…” he spoke as diplomatically as possible. “I understand how you and Kay feel. I do. But it’s too late for them. They’ve cast their lot with the devil. We have to treat them as the enemy, like they do us, before they destroy us. And if you don’t feel you can lead effectively, then I will.”

Danny and Alexa looked from Adrian to Greg. Kay was still reluctant to accept Adrian’s bleak view. Greg was of like mind, but he also knew that the team needed to stay united if they were to survive. In the old days (before adopting the Blue Dino title) he might have been democratic about it and put it to a vote, certain in his view and eager to attain or retain the ability to apply it. He was still certain about saving at least Pink and White Nova, but had to admit the sense in Adrian’s words. Maybe he wasn’t the right person to lead right now.

“Alright” he said, looking at Adrian. “I’ll trust you. And I hope to God you know what you’re doing.”
Adrian nodded gravely. All five of them then stood or sat in nervous silence. Adrian turned his chair to a wall and rested his head against his hands in thought. With his leadership now confirmed, he had more to think about than ever…

Monger and Revenger were overseeing the construction of a giant robot for the Novamen to match the Dinomen’s DinoRobo. Dozens of Ecodroids and machinery of their possession had been put to its assembly. Monger particularly watched with disapproval as the fuel tank was installed. The Ecodroids were all powered by a sort of “green fuel†as the environmentalist academics within Terra Nova and like-minded people would deem it. It made them superior to conventional machines that the dumb masses sloppily utilized, for which they would fight over finite, limited and wasteful energy sources, and helped sustain the Ecodroids’ contempt for organics. Since his creation Monger had spurred his fellow robots on to further develop their technology away from the Greenshirts’ eye; but all of a sudden he had been informed that the Novamen needed their technology in their fight against their counterparts. Paranoia seized his mind: was someone on to him?

“I don’t like this†he mumbled to Revenger. “This will force a setback on me.â€
He took his retainer to a more secluded area of the hangar and whispered half to himself.
“I may have to make my move earlier than planned. Summon the army to me once this work is finished.â€
On the other side of the hangar, Darwin XXII’s Ecodroid servant Uca observed the two in silence…

Danny and Greg had taken Moschops out for patrol, but both of them and felt the need to get away. The atmosphere back on board was still uneasy. Danny said nothing further to Greg about Adrian’s decision to assume team leadership, though Greg continued to look his way, expecting him to suddenly broach the subject.

They drove through the strip of a mid-sized town and saw, to their bemusement, little difference in the mood of the people in light of Terra Nova’s attacks. A fair number, those truly aware of the goings-on of the world, seemed fearful or suspicious. Greg even thought he saw a quietly held meeting of people whispering derisions against the Elites and the current repetiton of history. But many of the young folk, those their age, seemed unaware or ambivalent about the world’s current plight. The two heroes stopped below a roof party being held atop an apartment building. The sounds of their exuberance drifted down to them. Once or twice a boy or girl in flashy or gaudy attire hurried inside and up to the top. They looked to each other and shared their disappointment.
“They’re either really stupid or really clever†said Danny. Greg suddenly felt decades older compared to them. Before he would have balked at ever being the stereotypical old curmudgeon scowling over the young, but their apparent obliviousness to Terra Nova’s blatant war upon the world, upon life itself that it deemed unworthy, disheartened him. He was suddenly glad Adrian was not here with them, for he feared he might actually do something about it.

Just then a familiar face exited through the apartment doors. It was Kojo with two associates, presumably fellow Greenshirts, dressed in semi-casual attire. Greg and Danny prepared to intercept him but Kojo spotted them first. He strode up to them.
“How did you find me?†he asked with interest.
“Truth be told, we weren’t looking for you†said Danny in a brushing-off sort of way, as though dismissing Kojo’s self-importance. He saw his words have the desired effect as Kojo bristled slightly. He instead addressed Greg.
“Just as well, I have a message for you. We want a meeting on neutral ground. You see that club off over there?†he pointed to a club a mile or two away. “Go there tomorrow. No tricks.â€
“By you or us?†asked Greg.
“Both. And dress appropriately.â€

Danny let out a short laugh, the instruction oxymoronic to him for a place like that. Greg could sympathize with that attitude but kept his peace. Kojo tossed them five VIP IDs and flashed an arrogant smile, then disappeared with the other two.
“What do you think?†asked Greg.
“I don’t like it†said Danny.
“Well that’s par for the course by now, isn’t it?†muttered Greg sadly…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greg and Danny got back and informed the others of Kojo’s instruction. Adrian was at once suspicious and initially proposed to refuse him, but the others (largely Kay and Greg) persuaded him otherwise. But he insisted on being prepared, which frankly went without saying. They took advantage of their VIP passes and armed themselves with small smoke grenades and firecrackers hidden on their persons, in case a quick getaway was needed and to avoid using their Dinoman arsenal. Alexa managed somehow to get “appropriate†club attire for herself and Kay, both feeling a simultaneous animal thrill and reasoned embarrassment at the dresses they now donned. The boys resorted to more makeshift ways, but soon they were all prepared and arrived at the club.
“Remember the plan†Adrian whispered. “The first sign of trouble, we make a break for it.â€

They weaved through the mass of attendees and steeled themselves against the blaring sound. Once or twice Alexa thought someone tried to grab her and miss, either as a Nova ambush or for plain jollies. Kay unconsciously hung close to Danny while averting unwelcome gazes. Adrian couldn’t help an expression of loathing, and Greg upon nothing this feared a confrontation. Soon enough however they found the Novamen together in an upstairs booth partly secluded from the rest of the fray.
“There†Greg indicated to the others.
Trevor saw them and waved them up as though a friend expecting company. Adrian headed them and together the five approached their rivals.
“Have a seat†said Trevor pleasantly. Jennifer cast a haughty glance at her sister’s costume, and she in turn took in hers with sad criticism. What would their parents have thought? Perhaps pay it no mind, said a voice in her head that sounded almost like Danny, just so long as the pagan god of academia was sated with top marks.

“Well, what do you want?†asked Adrian curtly when all were seated.
“Right down to business with you†Trevor chided. “You need to loosen up. How about a drink?â€
“You think we would drink something you gave us?â€
“We wouldn’t poison you. We fight face-to-face… which is why we invited you here.â€
Dmitri was looking at the patrons. Danny noted his sickly face and unfocused mood. Trevor prodded him back to attention.
“Show them the specs.â€
“Right…†Dmitri mumbled and tossed onto the table a mobile device that showed the heroes the specs of a giant robot.
“This is NovaRobo†informed Kojo. “With this we’re at even odds with you.â€
“And?†prompted Adrian, purposely showing disinterest. “Should we be scared?â€
“You should see the sense in our cause†said Kojo. He was always eager to pontificate Terra Nova’s ideals, himself the perfect student of its leaders. “Your sister here can†he added, addressing Kay. “I recruited her myself. We bet on whether you could be persuaded too. Her money says no.â€
An indignant Kay made to reach over and grab Kojo, but Alexa restrained her. Jennifer was amused. Tami seemed panicked.

“So what do you want?†repeated Adrian.
“To settle this once and for all†said Trevor. He indicated the location of a coastline on the device. “Here. Tomorrow.â€
“Done†said Adrian.
“Now then, why don’t you go down there and have some fun?†Trevor waved to the floor below.
“We’ll pass†said Alexa.
“Come on, you could use some loosening up. You only live once.â€
“You’re right†muttered Greg. “So don’t waste your life.â€

He hoped that little plea had struck a nerve. Dmitri again was looking forlornly at the revelers below and scratching a blotch on his neck. The heroes slowly descended to the ground floor. But on the way Danny caught sight of a group of young men trying to drag a girl their way, and quelling her subdued but increasingly vocal resistance. No one else seemed to notice this. He could only guess what they wanted to do with her.
“Danny?†called Adrian.
Danny quickly took out a firecracker, lit it and rolled it toward the men. The small explosion threw them backward in fright and sent screams up all over. The girl escaped, and so did the Dinomen before anyone could finger them.
“That was dangerous†Kay chastised as they got away.
Danny only smiled and gave a playful jab with his finger…

The following day the Dinomen drove to the shoreline. Far across on an elevated road two motorcycles and a small van adorned with a rooftop cannon appeared and halted. Red and White Nova rode the bikes (named Otodus and Isurus respectively). Blue, Green and Pink Novas were seated in the van (named Phiomia). Seeing the heroes, they slowly drew onto the shore and dismounted. The two teams lined up, color against color. Neither side spoke; a silent cue was understood by them. Ten pairs of eyes locked on one another. Ten hands placed on their GenBuckles. Adrian and Trevor, the two leaders, prepared to give the signal.

One moment…. then another… a gust of wind blew and pushed a stone over the road onto the beach. Upon its fall the two sides charged and transformed.

*BGM plays*
(‘Kessen! Volt tai Liveman’ from Chouju Sentai Liveman)

A whirl of colors decorated the beach. As each separated to pursue their own duels, the Novamen sans Red revealed their own personal weapons.

Kojo wielded Neurazor, a thin sword with handle shaped like a dragonfly’s body and the thin, transparent blade designed after folded wings. He surprised Greg with his deft use of it against his Pteron Riser, and even further when he split the weapon into two blades, and these further unfolded into a pair of small, double-bladed halberds. Kojo, having studied stick fighting, used them like such; the blades could also fly like giant insects, and cut Greg as they swept past him.

In Dmitri’s hands was Bute Stinger, a whip sheathed by flexible metal plates and topped with a poison barb, resembling a scorpion’s tail. Danny barely managed avoiding the barb as he tried cutting, blasting and burning his rival, whatever he thought worked.

Jennifer had two shields on either arm, Chitenders (‘Chitin’ + ‘defender’), which she used against Kay’s repeated body and weapon blows. She used their serrated edges to cut her sister’s legs and arms. Both shields could combine and serve as a sort of ‘shell’.

Tami’s weapon was Nautilance, a lance with one end bearing a triangular shape resembling a nautiloid shell, and multiple termini on the other end in the shape of tentacles. Alexa tangled her Sniper sword on the latter and had it wrested out of her grip. She responded with a bombardment from Nykhannon.

Both sides fought each other to exhaustion. They collapsed back into their starting lines and let the rising tide lap against their legs.
“Cosmic Vanisher!â€
The Dinomen brought out the Cosmic Vanisher and prepared to fire. The Novamen reciprocated by gathering the large cannon off of Phiomia.
“Fire!â€
Both sides fired. The energy blasts hit each other and let off a large explosion, throwing everyone in the air and smashing back down.
“They’re mirroring everything we have†Alexa bemoaned. Adrian slammed his hand in the water and forced himself up for another go, refusing to betray a sign of faltering.

* * *

Meanwhile Darwin XXII had been watching the battle. Whether or not they realized it, the old Greenshirt knew it well. The entre battle amounted to a chess match between the traitor Richard Terran and his friends, and the juggernaut of Terra Nova. These youths were no more than the pawns for the visions of old men, sold on the doctrines of their mentors and willing to fight for them. The victor would be the one who could exhaust the other into submission. He now decided to move another piece across the board to aide his side’s flailing pawns, and sent a signal to an object in the sky with a device on his arm.

Thunderbirds began flying down and ripping the ground with artillery. The Dinomen dove from the explosions, allowing the Novamen to retreat further down the shore. Another large vessel appeared overheard. The detachable top portion was a platform runway for the Thunderbirds, and they launched from there to pursue the heroes.
“What is that?†asked Kay.
“Our robot†answered Kojo. “It’s time to escalate.â€

*DinoRobo Theme plays*

The Novamen scrambled into the large NovaLiner. The Thunderbirds continued sending artillery after the heroes. They dove into the water and hurriedly swam beneath the surface until they could reach a safer location, and then summoned the DinoJet and the Bio Machines. PrionCarrier (with ArchTanker piggy-backing) and AvisGyro joined DinoJet and commenced aerial battle. OsteusMarine gave cover fire from the water. NovaLiner waited until the blue fighters were driven off or destroyed, and then began attacking the mechas itself. After taking a beating the heroes activated the transformation to DinoRobo and transferred into the cockpit. It grabbed NovaLiner but was forced back by its guns. The Novamen now activated their mecha’s transformation. Their foes watched as the runway on top undocked and the bottom portion changed its configuration to that of a giant robot, NovaRobo.

robotechmacross.jpg

“What do you make of that?†asked Greg of Danny, whom among them was the most knowledge of such things. Danny gaped at the giant gun the robot bore and shook his head.
“Just hold on tight.â€

The two titans stood opposite each other, their controllers sizing the other up. Darwin XXII watched with anticipation. Then they clashed. The mechas battered each other with both fists and weaponry. Frustration mounted in the Dinomen; they couldn’t find any way through the Novamen’s armor. They covered themselves well. All they were doing was further exhausting themselves. Nevertheless they continued on without a choice. Adrian summoned SpinoTanker to form Theropod Custom for (rather literally) an extra edge. NovaRobo’s massive gun sent a shot that severely struck DinoRobo’s chest, but it still managed to slice the gun arm with its spinning saw.

“Switch to Placoderm!†ordered Adrian to Greg.
DinoRobo used its foot thrusters to speed up to NovaRobo and use its body to kick away, propelling itself backward. OsteusMarine replaced SpinoTanker as the armor. DinoRobo took its iridium sword, IridCaliber, and charged back toward NovaRobo, defended against the gunshots. It then caught the sword on the body and slashed across. NovaRobo smacked it away with its other arm.
“That’s it…†Darwin XXII coaxed silently. “Destroy each other. Drive yourselves to your own doom.†These were strange thoughts from the one who had helped select and train the Novamen. But Darwin XXII was a man that was now operating from force of habit than honest conviction in the rightness of the cause. Such dreams, or delusions, were for the young. He had done his part in training the elite of the next generation, but he could be as cynical about it as he wanted. Both robots were now considerably damaged. The two teams were far too evenly matched, he grimaced. Far too fanatical. He couldn’t help pitying them a little.

“We need to finish this, or this’ll go on forever†Alexa said.
“Disarm them†offered Kay.
“That’s a start…†mulled Adrian. “Get your Tanker ready, I have an idea. Fire on my word.â€
NovaRobo was attacking again. Adrian waited for them to be too close to counter effectively.
“Now!â€
ArchTanker rolled into view and fired its missiles at close range. NovaRobo was knocked back. DinoRobo seized this lapse of readiness and stabbed IridCaliber through the head. NovaRobo fell backward and crashed to the ground. The Novamen were forced to bail out. But before they could do anything Adrian undocked OsteusMarine and trained DinoRobo’s guns on them, consuming them in an artillery hail.

“What are you doing?!†shrieked Kay.
“You’ll kill them!†added Greg.
“No!†yelled Adrian back. “Separate them. Look!â€
The five had been thrown apart. Adrian sent one more volley down and then commanded his team to go after them. The Bio Machines took over for DinoRobo. Four of the Novamen had managed to regroup and were scrambling for cover, but Tami had gotten isolated. Alexa glided over to and tackled her before she could rejoin her comrades. Adrian and Kay trained their C-14 Snipers on her. “Don’t move.â€
“What do we do?†Jennifer asked Trevor.
Trevor swore under his breath and forced his team to retreat. “I’ll get her later…â€
NovaRobo got back up, switched back to Liner Mode and limped away. Tami watched them go in horror and turned back to her new captors. With resignation she removed her suit and submitted to them.

All this Darwin XXII saw. He had the ability to intervene. But instead he disappeared and left White Nova to her fate. If she was worthy enough to be a Novaman, she needed not his help to overcome this. This was a good enough challenge as any…

When Darwin XXII returned Uca was there to divulge what he had discovered. The Greenshirt smirked to himself.
“The order is collapsing before it’s even established†he opined aloud. He was of course duty-bound to stop such mutinous acts. The next meeting of the three Armies was soon. The Fuhrer would no doubt have a new speech for “his†disembodied voice to deliver, and want progress reports on Terra Nova’s growing dominion. He could reveal Monger’s treason then. Or… he could let things run their course. The mayhem that would ensue would be a delight. Besides, he too had as of late harbored unapproved thoughts, more from dillusionment than ambition.

“We’ll keep a lid on this for now†he told Uca. “I’ll inform Edom. He can take care of those robots. They’re not like you, Uca. They underestimate everyone and hate them just as much.â€
Uca nodded. Darwin XXII began to prepare for the Armies’ council…
