Just finished watching a retro Geraldo Rivera special reporting on the "Satanic Panic" (which is probably the most apropos epithet ever applied to anything) that began to emerge in the 80s. I find it interesting that specials like this are able to invite so many guest specialists and purported experts onto their panels but clearly none of them know the first thing about what they're talking about. The ones that do, in this case an actual practicing follower of a Satanic organization who was also the most well-spoken individual on the program and the daughter of the founder of the International Church of Satan himself were both relegated to insert interviews in which they were harrassed, provoked, and had their responses intentionally misrepresented or outright ignored. I'm so glad that this type of reportive journalism has strayed away from these deliberately xenophobic and dread-inspiring, sensationalist productions they used to put on, and it's kind of fascinating to watch the alteration in this country's values and cultural fixations over the decades. I can't imagine a major news network airing a special about occultism today.

Before any of you get too concerned about my viewing habits, I've just been watching a lot of documentaries lately.
