Although a recent update made it possible for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users to play together, Epic Games has now confirmed that the change was a mistake on their part. This meant that the millions of players who had found themselves able to experience the game together across platforms only had a limited time to make the most of the situation as the issue has since been corrected.
The mistake prompted Xbox boss Phil Spencer to say that he had hoped they would keep the cross-play option turned on. Microsoft and Nintendo have shown they are willing to allow players across their own ecosystems to play multiplayer with each other, although Sony have so far been resistant to implement a similar policy.
I would have liked to see them leave it on.
