Fifth Season For Netflix’s The Witcher Inadvertently Confirmed
To date, there have only been two released seasons of Netflix’s The Witcher, along with two spinoffs (one an animated movie, the other one of the few disappointing things Michelle Yeoh has ever starred in). It feels wacky to be talking about a Season 5, but apparently Netflix is.
Deadline published an interview with casting director Sophie Holland, who works for both The Witcher and Wednesday, over the weekend. In it, Holland casually let out that “We’re just about to start filming on season four…and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five.”
This is probably something Netflix would have preferred to announce themselves much later down the line. But it’s out there now. The Witcher is, of course, one of Netflix’s most popular shows at the moment and it would make sense to keep it going as long as possible (or until no one cares anymore). The streamer hasn’t had much luck with fantasy shows, but if you ask this reporter, they’re very self-sabotaging in that genre — they tend to cancel that stuff in one season regardless of how many views they get. Popularity or fan response doesn’t seem to make a difference either. They are inscrutable.
It also remains to be seen if viewers will even like Season Four, because it’s the one where Henry Cavill leaves his role as the title character and Liam Hemsworth replaces him. If the switch proves to be unpopular, Netflix just committed to paying for more of it.
