DC comics hired Mariko Tamaki, because she won a lot of Awards as a Young Adult fiction writer. DC wanted to gain new audiences aside from comic book fans. Her Graphic Novel “I am not Starfire” portrays Starfire as neglectful mother. This Graphic Novel is in an alternate world where Starfire is not a teenager anymore.
She is now a mother of a teenage girl who resents her. A daughter who thinks she is living behind her mother’s shadow. The book centers around a girl named Mandy. She is goth, gay and plus sized. Fans notice her resemblance to the Author Mariko Tamaki and that makes this look like a self insert fanfiction.
Youtube Comicbook Vloggers are unhappy with this material because it is trying to pander to people who don’t buy comics.
There are also fans who are not fans of Mandy’s Aesthetic because she looks like the author. So there is now a growing trend on social media of fans trying to redesign her.
Hey now I’m not the best artist out there but the whole “I’m not Starfire” comic would be sooo much better if she actually looked like Starfire. Orange skin green eyes. These are things you can’t easily change about yourself- let me explain pic.twitter.com/snTRT0Agzg

I redesigned Starfire's daughter cause let's be honest, that's not Starfire's kid, that's just a shameless self insert of this book's author. #art #ArtistOnTwitter #comic #comicbooks #comicsgate #DC #dccomics #TeenTitans #digitalart #characterdesign #IAmNotStarfire #starfire pic.twitter.com/Akst77UJfu

I did a sketch of a Mandy from 'I Am Not Starfire', I did this for fun and as I didn't like the fact she didn't resemble Starfire at all, I suppose that's the point but if shes related to Starfire you would think she'll at least have a similar skin colour. pic.twitter.com/1m2Xy2nFVc

There is a fan who kept her as a plus sized but changed her to look nothing like a self insert.
saw the cover of the graphic novel "i am not starfire" (ya don't say) and had to give this girl a redesign and make it look less like a self-insert (well sorta) #thicc pic.twitter.com/6c3Pzzv9vO

As of the writing of this article, More redesigns of Mandy is getting uploaded on Social media. Despite of these negative reactions, DC comics seemed is so impressed with Miss Tamaki because she will takeover as Batman’s long term writer. She is the first woman to be given that honor. Fans are now nervous on what will she do to Batman.
