EA Still Not Focusing On Remastering Old Games
Last year, EA executive vice president Patrick Soderlund told Game Informer in an interview that his company was not looking to make any remasters of their popular content despite an obvious demand from fans. However, recently, the same person seemed to change his stance when he told Game Informer that the mega publisher was now looking at how remastered titles had been successful and was likely to jump on the bandwagon in the future.
“The honest answer is that we are absolutely actively looking at it,” Soderlund said in the interview. “I can’t announce anything today, but you can expect us most likely to follow our fellow partners in Activision and other companies that have done this successfully.”
That doesn’t seem to exactly be the case though. Speaking to IGN during an extensive interview, Peter Moore explained how the company wanted to look to the future rather than the past and concentrate of getting new titles out of the doors.
Additionally, Moore explained that although remasters can provide an easy way to make money, they are likely to distract from some of their other projects. He pointed to Mass Effect remasters as an example that could negatively distract attention away from the upcoming Mass Effect: Andromeda.
“We’re a company that is focused on delivering for the future,” he told IGN. “I was asked a question once [about remasters and I said] it’s just not what we do. We’ve got incredibly talented dev studios around the world who are focused on delivering new IP, new experiences, [and] more and more live services.”
“Can we make an easy buck on remastering Mass Effect? Yes. Have a thousand people asked me that? Yes, they have,” he later added. “We just feel like we want to go forward. There’s a little thing called Mass Effect: Andromeda that we’re totally focused on at BioWare and it’s gonna be magnificent.”
