E3 2016: Phil Spencer Talks Project Scorpio
With the reveal of Project Scorpio, and its desire to be the “most powerful console ever”. Many are wondering if this will start a trend of updating, and even releasing, consoles more frequently. Xbox Boss Phil Spencer put a stop to this in an interview with WIRED:
“We’re not on a hardware tick-tock that says I need to put out a console every two years or every one year to get people to upgrade. That’s not the console model,” Spencer told WIRED in an interview at E3. Instead, the company is “trying to think beyond generations”
He did note however that they want Scorpio and all their products to work with virtual reality:
“When we went out and talked to VR developers, the capability and the hardware spec that they need to deliver a console-like experience to VR was a requirement of 6 teraflops, which clearly, today’s consoles—PlayStation 4 and Xbox One—don’t have,” he said, suggesting the current PS4 isn’t well suited for VR.
Scorpio is set to release next year.
