E3 2011: Sony Conference Predictions
E3, the premier tradeshow for the gaming industry is rapidly approaching. In celebration TheParanoidGamer will be specfically highlighting what we expect to see from the major three conferences. This article gives a detailed look at what TheParanoidGamer expects to see at Sony’s press conference. Hit the break to read our anyalsis and don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comment section.
Some people may say that Sony’s press conference last year was underwhelming, however to really enjoy it you had to be there. I imagine like last year 3D is going to be a point of interest, especially considering how crowd pleasing it was last year. The major showcase is obviously going to be Uncharted 3. If I had to guess (which I am) I’d say that gamers are in store for some sort of sequence involving a crashing plane. Perhaps Drake parachutes out? That would easily top the Uncharted 2 E3 presentation. What other type of presentations are we likely to see? It’s unlikely we will see Twisted Metal shown off again, because frankly it’s not the type of title that presents itself well. I have no doubt that it will play a huge part on the show floor though. Resistance 3 is likely to get some time on the big-screen; showcasing one of the bigger action sequences the game has to offer.
The last presentation (should be around 2-4) will showcase a 3rd party developer. Given EA’s commitment to the PS3 it’s entirely possible we could see a live presentation of Battlefield 3 or even Mass Effect 3. Originally I was also going to include the chance for Bethesda to showcase Syrim, but given their track record, that has a much better chance of being shown at the Microsoft conference. Expect a few montages showcasing first-party and third-party titles. There’s also a chance for possible announcements regarding new HD collections, possibly Jak and Daxter or even Metal Gear Solid.
The usual sales figures will no doubt be shown albeit in limited fashion and after that attendees will most likely be treated to either some new developments within PSN or a more detailed look at NGP. It’s not a matter of which one will be covered, but rather where in the conference they will be covered. PlayStation Plus has been a decent success for Sony and I imagine they will unveil a few new services, one of which I hope is cross-game chat. If it isn’t released or announced sometime this year, I doubt it will make its debut on the PS3.
The NGP will be the big focal point of the Sony press conference. Sony will want to showcase the graphical power of the device and I expect to see more regarding the NGP versions of Uncharted, Resistance, and most importantly Call of Duty. Whether you fan of the series or not, the Call of Duty brand is a huge opportunity for the NGP. If it shows and plays well, it could become a killer-app for the device. I want to see more on the functionality of the device. Will it use Android? Will Google be involved with some facets of the software? What other publishers will be involved? I suspect Sony will push those facts to the attendees during the conference. The biggest question in regards to the NGP is price and I believe that Sony has learned from the pricing woes. The NGP will be priced at around $250.
What’s in store for the future? Recently publishers have been pushing for new hardware; however that’s not the opinion of the industry as a whole. I don’t think Sony will debut the PS4 until next year, at the earliest. There are a couple of titles which have been eerily silent. Agent is due for an official unveiling and more or less will probably be shown in the form of a trailer. A new iteration in the Syphon Filter series has been rumored for quite some time, and like last year I’m going to say it will be unveiled. Sony is in desperate need of a stealth/action title and Syphon Filter could fit that mold perfectly. The other alternative is the announcement of Metal Gear Solid 5, which isn’t out of the realm of possibility. I’ve also included a few other possibilities below.
Recap of Predictions
- NGP Price at around $250.
- Uncharted 3 singleplayer showcased in 3D
- Syphon Filter or Metal Gear Solid 5 announcement
- Agent footage (gameplay trailer)
- Media Molecule RPG announced
- Mass Effect 3 Demo
- Exclusive Move Titles revealed and dated (Trailer)
- Grand Theft Auto V announcement
