Despite a rocky start, and some criticisms from both fans and reviewers, Destiny appears to not only have weathered the storm, but thrived in it. Bungie is constantly updating and upgrading the massive RPG title, all in an attempt to make it better for those who play it. According to Activision (via IGN), that’s about 20 million players strong. That’s right, 20 million players.
This news came via their Quarterly Earnings call, in which the company revealed not only the earnings of the company (hint: they made a lot), but also the status of their big titles, such as Destiny.
Now to be fair, it’s unclear whether there is 20 million players currently playing Destiny, or there have been 20 million over its lifetime. However, at last check in February, the game had only 16 million players, so clearly there was a lot of new gamers since.
On the topic of expansions, the company also teased during the call that a massive Destiny expansion would be coming later this year. One that would appeal to gamers both old and new:
“We’ll have a major release which is the biggest addition to the Destiny universe yet,” said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, adding that the company is confident it will “be compelling not just to current Destiny fans, but to people who have not yet seen the Destiny universe.”
There have been leaks as to what this could be, but time will tell. At the rate Destiny is going though, it seems this title is only going to get bigger.
