I Am Not Starfire is like a magnet to negative criticism, they could have made this polarizing at least.
I Am Not Starfire seems the writer has very little understanding of Starfire outside of the cartoon

"I am not Starfire" is, exactly as everyone predicted, a story about a petulant little whelp who is an awful person to everyone in their lives and then gets a masturbatory ego-trip involving superpowers
This was written for the authors own pleasure

Mariko Tamaki is a New York Bestselling author. Even though she has an achievement, trusting her to write about a licensed character is a mistake. Usually, when a work of fiction is polarizing, there is a balance between fans and bashers. The reaction for this book is mostly negative but people still purchased it anyway for hate reading. Tamaki should have made a research about the Superhero Starfire before writing about her. She portrayed one of the most beloved superheroes into a Vapid, neglectful mother, who is very dense about her surroundings.
Then we have the main character, Mandy. She is an author self-insert character who is very unlikable. Flawed characters are trendy now but they have to be sympathetic. Mandy is a bitter and angry rebellious teen who hates her mother because she can’t stand being behind her shadow. She has no superpowers and she hates that people love her mother. I tried my best to find something relatable and sympathetic about her but I can’t. The book may have the intention to have a feminist message but Mandy kept on slut shaming her mother because of the way she dress.
DC had made characters that represents the LGBT community like Poison Ivy and Bat Woman. I don’t think a Vapid and negative person is someone the community will want to represent them. If you want something to hate read, I highly recommend his book. I wish Tamaki made an effort to make Mandy relatable instead of making her obnoxious.
Her Aesthetic is way too similar to the Author and that makes people theorize that Mandy is a self insert.
