XCOM 2 is set to show just how big, and strategic, the recapturing of Earth can be. Set in an alternate universe from the main XCOM one, the aliens have taken over, and a human organization called Advent is helping them, and to help ensure that your team (in the game) doesn’t reclaim earth, they’ll be employing numerous tactics to stop you. A big one is Dark Events.
As Firaxis explains: “ADVENT has everything to lose in XCOM 2, Commander. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Dark Events – ADVENT counter-operations that take place within the strategy layer of XCOM 2.
Dark Events aim to hinder XCOM’s progress in XCOM 2. As you, the Commander, start to reclaim Earth from ADVENT, Dark Events will surface.”
They go on:
“[Dark Events] run the gamut from something as small as improving Advent soldiers’ gear in the field to more dramatic gameplay changes such as deploying a UFO that will hunt the Avenger,” Firaxis wrote. “Advent can also negatively affect XCOM supply drops and, in a far more chilling Dark Event, hide extra Faceless amongst the populace of each mission. Rapid Response poses another massive threat to XCOM, guaranteeing Advent reinforcements will be deployed during all Guerrilla Ops missions. We’ve also heard reports of Advent employing Viper Rounds—poisonous ammunition made from Viper venom.”
