Cyberpunk Edgerunners Triumphs In 2023 Anime Awards
Cyberpunk 2077 may have had a hard time as a video game, but as an anime it’s had nothing but success. The animated spinoff Cyberpunk Edgerunners, produced for Netflix, took home the top prize in today’s Anime Awards. The event was hosted by a mix of movie directors, Hollywood actors, sports figures and Twitch influencers.
There was no dominant property this year, even though some anime were nominated in over a dozen categories. Despite winning Anime of the Year AND being new, Edgerunners didn’t take home Best New Anime. That went to Spy x Family, which ended up winning six awards, but was up for sixteen. Best Movie went to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, while Haruo Sotozaki got Best Director for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc. The award for Best Main Character went to Attack On Titan‘s Eren Jaeger (Even now? Come on, he’s a jerk) and Kohta Yamamoto and Hiroyuki Sawano won for Best Music score from the same series.
During the event Crunchyroll announced a new partnership with Sony Music Entertainment (not hard; Sony owns the whole company) to add more than 100 full-length live concerts, 3,200 music videos, and over 250 artists from Sony Music Entertainment’s Japanese division to the streaming service starting today. They also announced a collaboration with Capcom and Monster Hunter for some kind of event in Street Fighter: Duel, a mobile RPG published by Crunchyroll Games.
