When The Last Of Us was released in 2013 it sold millions of copies and won countless awards, but even with all that noise surrounding it, no one could really say for certain if it’d ever get a sequel. The thing about developer Naughty Dog is they don’t work that way — they don’t knee-jerk sequels into production based on sales alone. The team must come up with a satisfying idea first.
Whether you were satisfied with Last Of Us Part II or not, ever since its release Naughty Dog has been getting the same question: “will there be a Part 3?” And until now, that question was met with silence. But co-director Neil Druckmann has finally dropped a hint at the end of Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2, which was released on YouTube last weekend.
“The great thing about working at Naughty Dog is that we don’t have to [do it],” he said. “It’s always like, ‘we would love another Last of Us, but if you guys feel you’re passionate about something else, we’ll support this other thing.’ Very privileged position to be in, I never take that for granted. I’ve been just thinking about it, ‘is there a concept there?’ And for now years, I haven’t been able to find that concept. But recently, that’s changed, and I don’t have a story, but I do have that concept that to me is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is its own thing, and yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”
This isn’t a guarantee or a greenlight. LoU3 is just something they’re “thinking about.” Naughty Dog currently has other projects in the works, like an untitled and unrevealed game with a sci-fi theme, that will come first. Should there be a Last of Us Part III, it may not happen for a long, long time.
The HBO show based on the games, however, will need new material once they exhaust what happened in Part II. Maybe NG should figure this all out sooner rather than later?
