Coraline And Paranorman Return To Theaters This Fall
In 2009 I took a trip to the mall to support a film that just came out called Coraline. It was from a new animation studio — and a local one — called Laika, and I wanted to support them so they would survive. Fortunately, the film itself turned out to be pretty good, and it set the foundation for 15 years of stop-motion animated features like The Boxtrolls, Missing Link, and the criminally underrated Kubo and the Two Strings. Not all of them have been box office breadwinners, but none have been critical duds.
Their first two releases, Coraline and Paranorman, remain their most popular and if you never saw them in the theater, your chance will soon come. Fathom Events is re-screening both Coraline and Paranorman this fall. Here’s when to catch them….
CORALINE: TUESDAY, AUGUST 24
From Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach) and based on the novella of the same name by author Neil Gaiman (Sandman), Coraline is a wondrous, thrilling, fun and suspenseful adventure. A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life – only much better.
PARANORMAN: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16
In this comedy thriller, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can the town call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman, who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul-whisperer bravely summons up all that makes a hero – courage and compassion – as he finds his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.
Each screening will also contain a special behind-the-scenes tour of Laika Studios. Check these two links for the showings nearest you.
