At last night’s UFC 194 event, the main event title fight between former featherweight champion and new undisputed champion Conor McGregor had another unique stipulation added to the bout. The winner of the fight would be the other athlete to appear on the cover of EA Sports UFC 2 opposite former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. With his win at the pay-per-view event, Conor McGregor is now confirmed to be the other athlete who will grace the upcoming game’s cover.
The cover was revealed on the PPV broadcast following McGregor’s win. McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo only 13 seconds into the first round, making it the fastest knockout in a UFC title fight in mixed martial arts history. EA Sports later revealed the cover art for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game on Twitter, which you can check out below. Conor McGregor’s win was quite momentous considering the fact that Jose Aldo had not lost a single fight for over 10 years.
What is interesting is that some hardcore MMA fans consider the cover honor to be a curse for the athletes who have been put on it. Case in point, Rousey was defeated and lost her title shortly after it was announced she was on the cover. Granted, McGregor and Aldo were not confirmed yet to be on the cover before the fight, but that the winner would be. So one could argue that McGregor broke the curse, or that it will go into effect for his next fight.
More details are yet to be revealed for EA Sports UFC 2. However, it’s definitely exciting to know that the cover is set and one of MMA’s most exciting superstars will grace the cover alongside the trailblazer and icon Ronda Rousey. EA Sports UFC 2 is scheduled for a spring 2016 release. The game will be available only for PlayStation 4 and Xbox one.
