Check Out The Steven Rhodes Card Games Kickstarter Before It’s Too Late
Sorry we didn’t learn about this one earlier, but there’s a Kickstarter going on for a tabletop card game based off the art of Steven Rhodes, and it would be criminal not to mention such a thing here — but there are only a few hours left. Hopefully this message reached you in time.
Who is Steven Rhodes? He’s a graphic artist known for his reinterpretations of 1970s children’s book covers. You know the type: Rainbow borders, bulbous fonts and extremely detailed children in period-accurate clothing, with an educational safety message most prominent. Rhodes takes such concepts to their extreme with pieces like “Don’t Talk To Strangers,” depicting the kids chatting with a large-headed alien, “Let’s Dig For Treasure,” showing the kids digging their shovels into a graveyard, and “Let’s Summon Demons,” which is self-explanatory.
This kind of material was begging to be a card game from Day 1, and it’s happening now. Let’s Dig For Treasure, Let’s Summon Demons and Don’t Talk To Strangers are all being game-ified, each with unique mechanics. Here’s how you play Let’s Dig For Treasure, for starters:
- 1. On your turn, choose and “dig up” a card from any of the Dig Stacks…look for cards worth a lot of points, or cards that trigger a powerful effect, such as stealing a card from another player!
- 2. You can stop digging at any time, or keep digging up cards for as long as you want…the more cards you dig up before you “stop,” the more you stand to gain–but be careful–if you dig up a 2nd Worms Card, or even a SINGLE skeleton card, your turn will end immediately and you’ll lose *EVERYTHING* you dug up so far (this turn)!
- 3. Once an entire Dig Stack is empty, the game is over and players add up the total point values on their cards! Be sure to look and see if you scored any “bonus point” effects (you did make sure to dig up some Milk to go with your Cookies, right?).
- 4. You’ve got all kinds of zany stuff to find while digging: Loyal Dogs (protect you from a Skeleton!), Sewer Lines (worth negative points–give it to your least favorite opponent!), heck, you might even transcend death with The Crown of the Lich Lord, or turn those pesky worms into big points with Skwirmz the Worm God!
For a $20 pledge, you can get a copy of a Steven Rhodes card game, produced by Dynomite Games (a subbrand of Cryptozoic Entertainment). You can pick from the three, but if you want them all you’ll have to up your pledge to $50. If for some reason you just want two of the three (weirdo), you can do that with a $40 pledge.
The Steven Rhodes games have earned way, way past their goal at this point, almost reaching $300,000 as of this writing. But you only have a few hours left! Hurry and get your pledge in before Christmas Eve!
